Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and explicitly set its visibility to Private. Check the saved setting before the event. Private limits viewing to you and people you specifically select; Unlisted is not private in the same way, because anyone with the link can watch and share it. If you only need an uploaded video to appear at a set time, schedule the video’s publication instead—it is not a live broadcast.
Set a scheduled live stream to Private
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Open the Manage tab and schedule a stream. Create a new event or reuse settings, then edit the stream details.
- Set Visibility to Private and save.
- Reopen or inspect the saved stream details in Live Control Room and confirm that the visibility still reads Private before sharing or starting anything. YouTube notes that default visibility can vary with age-based settings, so do not rely on an assumed default. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance describes the available visibility choices.
Privacy and the encoder preview are separate checks: a working preview does not establish who can watch the event, and a Private setting does not establish that the video feed is ready.
Choose Private, not Unlisted, for limited access
| Visibility | Who can watch | What it means before the event |
|---|---|---|
| Private | You and viewers you specifically choose. | Private videos do not appear in YouTube search or your channel’s Videos tab. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link. | Viewers can reshare the link, so this is not suitable if access must be limited to selected people. |
| Public | Anyone. | The stream may appear in search and on channel surfaces. |
These are YouTube’s stated access distinctions; see YouTube’s explanation of video privacy settings. If selected viewers need access while the event is Private, make sure they are among the people specifically allowed to watch.
Prepare the encoder without exposing the stream
- In YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and stream key for the scheduled event into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: it lets the encoder send a feed to your YouTube stream.
- Set up the encoder well before the event. YouTube recommends setup at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before the event. Confirm both that the feed looks and sounds right and that the stream’s saved visibility remains Private.
- At the event start, if the intended audience is everyone, change the stream’s visibility to Public in Live Control Room and verify the current event state before proceeding with the broadcast. YouTube’s help pages establish the available visibility controls, but do not spell out every interface transition for this prerecorded encoder workflow; follow the current Studio controls and confirm the resulting state.
YouTube’s timing recommendations and encoder guidance are in YouTube live streaming tips. YouTube describes software and hardware encoders as streaming options; professional hardware is suggested for higher-production events, but it is not required just to select Private. YouTube’s encoder overview discusses the options.

Do you mean a scheduled video or a live event?
If viewers should experience an encoder-based live broadcast, schedule a live stream and manage its live visibility in Live Control Room. YouTube does not establish in the cited guidance that an uploaded video file can be turned directly into a scheduled live broadcast without an encoder workflow.
If you simply want an uploaded recording to become available at a particular date and time, use scheduled video publishing: schedule the private upload to become public at the selected date, time, and time zone. That publishes an ordinary video; it does not create a live event. YouTube says a public video’s displayed watch-page date is based on Pacific Standard Time, so account for that if the displayed date matters. See YouTube’s instructions for scheduling video publication.

What viewers may see before the scheduled start
YouTube says scheduled streams may appear as upcoming and viewers may be able to select “Notify me.” Its guidance does not specify precisely how a private scheduled event is presented to people who are not invited, or whether they receive reminders. Do not assume that Private means the event will be hidden from every surface or that reminders will or will not be sent; check the event’s current visibility and presentation in Live Control Room.
Common problems and fixes
- The stream is not private: Reopen the scheduled stream details in Live Control Room, set Visibility to Private, save, and verify the saved value. Do not infer privacy from the default.
- You shared an Unlisted link thinking it was restricted: Anyone with that link can watch and reshare it. Change the visibility to Private and select the people who should have access.
- The encoder connects but the preview is wrong or missing: Check the stream URL and stream key for the scheduled event, then inspect the Live Control Room preview. Keep the privacy check separate from troubleshooting the feed.
- You only need the recording to release at a chosen time: Use scheduled publication for the uploaded video rather than creating an encoder-based live event.
- You expect a private event to be invisible or reminders to be disabled: YouTube’s guidance does not establish those exact behaviors for private scheduled events. Inspect the current event state and visibility in Studio, and avoid promising invitees a reminder unless you have confirmed it.
