Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To keep a Raspberry Pi FFmpeg stream online through a power cut, back up the whole local chain: the Pi and its power supply, plus any router, modem, or optical network terminal (ONT) that loses power. A battery for the Pi alone cannot keep the broadcast reaching YouTube if broadband equipment shuts down. Even with all local devices powered, the stream still depends on your ISP and the upstream network.
What has to stay powered
Think of the broadcast as a chain: FFmpeg reads the video on the Pi, the Pi encodes or packages and sends it, and the broadband connection carries it to YouTube. A power cut can break any powered link in that chain.
- Raspberry Pi: Include its normal power supply and any attached storage or peripherals needed for playback.
- Router and modem: Back these up if they lose power during an outage.
- ONT: If fibre broadband uses a separately powered ONT, it also needs backup. A router that remains on cannot provide internet if the ONT is off.
- ISP and upstream network: Your local backup cannot restore a failed provider connection or upstream service.
Start by identifying your exact Pi model and its supply requirement. Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s current documentation recommends 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5; using a 3 A supply limits current available to peripherals. For Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, the recommendation is 5 V at 3 A. These are supply recommendations, not measured power consumption or predicted UPS runtime. Pi 3 and earlier use different connectors and requirements, so check the documentation for your model before buying or wiring a backup. Raspberry Pi power supply documentation.
Do not assume an advertised battery capacity or a generic USB port will deliver the voltage and current your board needs. Cable voltage loss, conversion circuitry, and attached devices can affect whether the Pi receives stable power. Check the UPS output and connector against the complete load, not just the board name.

Choose a UPS for the complete load and outage you want to bridge
There is no reliable universal runtime figure for a Raspberry Pi, router, and ONT combination. Runtime depends on the UPS and battery, conversion losses, battery condition, and everything connected. No India-specific power-cut frequency or tested Pi-plus-network runtime figure is established here, so size the system around your own measured load and target outage rather than assuming a typical duration.
- List the devices that must remain on. Include the Pi, its storage and necessary peripherals, router, modem, and ONT if present.
- Check battery-mode outputs. Confirm the voltage, current, connector, and supported load for each device. A UPS may have different limits on battery than on mains.
- Estimate or measure the combined load. Use the device specifications or a suitable power meter under the same operating conditions as the stream.
- Choose capacity for your target duration. Treat VA as a sizing specification, not a guarantee of hours. Confirm runtime at a comparable load where the manufacturer provides it.
- Test the assembled setup. Run the actual stream with all required equipment connected and observe how long the system lasts. Repeat as the battery ages or the load changes.
A Raspberry Pi UPS HAT can provide board-level backup, but it does not automatically power a separate router, modem, or ONT. For a broadcast that needs internet during an outage, compare options by Pi compatibility, battery-mode output, the total supported load, runtime at that load, ability to power networking gear, battery condition or replacement, and the ease of checking status. Do not rank a unit by VA alone. No particular UPS model is verified or tested here.

Set FFmpeg and YouTube up for the connection you actually have
Backup power does not increase upload capacity. Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain, then test before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends choosing quality that is reliable for the available internet connection, testing with audio and motion similar to the real content, monitoring stream health, and using RTMPS for YouTube Live. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Measure upload under realistic conditions. Test when the connection is in normal use and, if possible, at the times you expect to stream. Do not set the video bitrate to the connection’s best-case upload result.
- Choose conservative video settings. Select a resolution and bitrate with headroom for variation in the uplink. If the stream becomes unstable, lower the load and test again.
- Use RTMPS where your FFmpeg setup supports it. Use the ingest address and stream key shown by YouTube for your broadcast; keep the key private.
- Run a test with representative content. Include the real audio and motion, since a still image or silent test does not represent the same encoding and delivery conditions.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and reports healthy stream status, rather than assuming that a running FFmpeg process means the audience can see it.
Exact bitrate and resolution recommendations depend on the chosen output format and the upload connection; there is no single safe setting without those details. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists settings by resolution and frame rate. Choose from that guidance only after confirming your uplink can sustain the selected bitrate.

Make recovery a separate, tested layer
A service supervisor can relaunch FFmpeg if the process exits, but process restart is not the same as a successful YouTube recovery. FFmpeg supports RTMP/RTMPS, and its protocol documentation describes RTMP as operating over TCP/IP. Some reconnect controls in FFmpeg’s documentation belong to the HTTP protocol section; they are not a general guarantee that a YouTube RTMP publishing session will resume after a network interruption. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the protocol and options you actually use.
- Configure a service supervisor to restart FFmpeg if it exits, using the command and environment that work for your stream.
- During a planned test, briefly interrupt power or network access in a controlled way. Avoid testing during a broadcast that must not be disrupted.
- Restore the connection and observe whether FFmpeg reconnects or exits and is relaunched.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for a healthy incoming stream. Do not treat a process status alone as proof of recovery.
Resilience has distinct layers: stable power for each required local device, available upload connectivity, a process that can be restarted, and confirmation in YouTube. A UPS will not fix an unavailable ISP, an invalid stream key, encoder settings that exceed the uplink, or an FFmpeg input that fails to recover.

Common failure cases and what to check
- The Pi stays on, but YouTube goes offline: Check whether the router, modem, or ONT lost power, then check ISP availability. Backing up only the Pi does not preserve the broadband path.
- The Pi reboots or peripherals disconnect: Verify the model’s required supply, battery-mode output, cable, and total peripheral load. A weak USB output or voltage drop can make a nominally powered system unstable.
- FFmpeg is running but YouTube shows no healthy stream: Check the stream key, ingest configuration, available upload capacity, and YouTube Live Control Room status. A live process is not proof of successful ingest.
- FFmpeg does not resume after a network interruption: Check the actual protocol in use and what the selected reconnect options support. Ensure the supervisor can relaunch an exited process, then repeat a controlled interruption test.
- The UPS lasts less time than expected: Measure the complete connected load and test the battery in its current condition. Capacity labels and VA ratings do not by themselves establish runtime.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded video, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it loops your uploaded video from the cloud at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free with no card.
