You can use a phone in a YouTube Live workflow, but YouTube’s standard mobile-live instructions do not document selecting and looping a saved video as the source. For that, you need an encoder app that explicitly supports local video playback and looping, then must verify it works on your particular phone. A phone-based 24/7 stream is not guaranteed: the app, device, power, heat and internet connection all have to keep working.
If you need a complete YouTube archive, avoid one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. The steps below cover YouTube’s documented requirements, what to test in an encoder, and a cloud alternative for continuous playback.
What you need to know before streaming a saved video
YouTube’s mobile app instructions describe starting a live broadcast from a phone, but do not document choosing a saved video file and looping it. YouTube separately documents connecting an encoder using a stream URL and stream key. That connection method is the relevant YouTube workflow for a prerecorded source, but YouTube’s documentation does not establish that a particular mobile encoder can play local files, loop them, run unattended or remain reliable for 24 hours.
Before relying on an app, check with its maker that it supports all of the following on your phone and current operating-system version:

- Using a local video file as the live video source.
- Repeating the file or playlist continuously.
- Continuing playback when the app is in the background or the screen is off, if your setup requires that.
- Reconnecting after a lost network connection and recovering after the phone or app is interrupted.
- Handling the video’s format and resolution without unexpected conversion or playback errors.
YouTube lists mobile-capable encoder apps, including Larix Broadcaster for Android and iOS, on its encoder setup help page. That listing does not confirm that Larix, or any other named app, supports local-file playback, looping or unattended 24/7 operation. Verify those specific functions with the app maker rather than assuming the listing guarantees them.
Check YouTube mobile live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s mobile live-stream requirements apply regardless of whether you are streaming in India. Before configuring an encoder, confirm your channel meets the current requirements in YouTube’s mobile live-streaming guidance:

- Your channel has at least 50 subscribers.
- Your channel is verified.
- You have had no live-streaming restrictions within the past 90 days.
- Live streaming is enabled for the channel.
- You have a supported Android or iOS device.
First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. These are YouTube platform requirements; they are not India-specific rules. The mobile help page’s country list relates to a particular Playables feature and should not be read as a complete list of countries where ordinary mobile live streaming is available.
Choose a workflow for prerecorded playback

This is a workflow comparison, not an endorsement by YouTube of a particular app or service. The right choice depends on whether your phone encoder can perform the required file-playback functions and sustain the connection.

Set up a phone encoder for YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming and prepare the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions to locate the stream URL and stream key for that event.
- Configure the encoder app. In the app, select the local prerecorded file or playlist as its source only if the app explicitly offers that feature. Set it to loop if continuous playback is supported. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings; use the values shown for the event, not a key copied from an unrelated setup.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not post it publicly or share it with an untrusted app or person. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Run an unlisted test. Start with an unlisted event and confirm the correct video and audio appear in YouTube’s preview. Test the full loop, app behavior with the screen locked or app backgrounded if relevant, and what happens after a brief connection loss. Monitor the actual broadcast rather than assuming that a successful initial connection proves it will continue unattended.
- Start the intended event only after the test. Confirm that the event is accessible, the preview is correct and the phone remains connected to a reliable network. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring streams; a successful test cannot guarantee a particular carrier, phone or encoder will sustain a 24-hour session.
Plan for upload bandwidth and phone limits
YouTube says, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” It recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. For example, if the encoder is sending at a total of 5 Mbps, aim for at least 6.25 Mbps of available upload bandwidth, rather than using the full measured capacity. This is a planning calculation from YouTube’s headroom recommendation, not a guarantee of stable service.
Use a reliable connection and check audio and video continuously. A phone setup also depends on the device staying powered, the encoder remaining active and the device avoiding interruptions from heat, operating-system behavior or app failure. Do not assume a particular Indian mobile network or plan can sustain a 24-hour upload: YouTube’s guidance does not compare Indian carriers, data costs or local coverage. Check your own plan and test the exact location and device you intend to use.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour live stream?
Not necessarily. YouTube’s archive guidance says: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If a complete archive matters, schedule shorter broadcasts that stay under 12 hours and keep a separate local recording backup where possible. The archive guidance is not a promise that YouTube will automatically restart the stream or that sequential broadcasts will have no gap.

YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A detected match can lead to a placeholder, interruption or termination. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have all necessary rights, including music rights, and to comply with applicable law.

Having a downloaded copy, or permission to upload a video to YouTube, does not by itself establish permission to retransmit it live. If a third-party rights owner has licensed the material, YouTube advises that the channel may need to be allowlisted through Content ID to avoid interruption. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and get the rights needed for both the live broadcast and any archive.
Troubleshoot common phone-stream problems
- You cannot start mobile live streaming: Recheck subscriber eligibility, channel verification, recent live restrictions, device support and whether live streaming is enabled. If this is your first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder stream: Confirm you copied the event’s current server URL and stream key into the encoder, that the event is ready in Live Control Room, and that the key was not mistyped or reset.
- The video does not play or loop: YouTube’s encoder listing does not certify local-file playback. Check the app maker’s documentation for supported file sources, formats and looping, and retest with an unlisted event.
- The stream buffers, drops or looks unstable: Compare the encoder’s total bitrate with available upload bandwidth and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check the network at the actual streaming location and monitor the stream’s preview and audio/video.
- The stream stops when the screen locks or app is backgrounded: Check the encoder’s documented background behavior and your phone’s battery or app restrictions. Test the intended screen and power settings before relying on an unattended broadcast.
- The phone or broadcast stops during a long session: The available YouTube guidance does not promise 24-hour reliability for a phone encoder. Investigate app termination, device heat, power interruption and network loss; test a shorter run before repeating the setup.
- The video is replaced, interrupted or terminated: Check for a third-party-content match and confirm that you have the rights required for live use. Contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting if the material is licensed.
- You do not get a complete archive: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep sessions shorter than that limit when the archive matters and maintain a separate recording backup.
