Run an encoder such as FFmpeg on a VPS, feed it your authorized playlist plus a continuous video track, and send the output to YouTube over RTMPS using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. A VPS can keep the encoder running without a home computer, but it does not guarantee YouTube will preserve the same live event or playlist position after a failure. Test recovery, monitor Live Control Room, and clear music rights before you go live.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enabling can take up to 24 hours.
- A Linux VPS with enough storage for your media and stable outbound capacity above the combined audio/video bitrate, plus network overhead.
- FFmpeg, an authorized audio playlist, and a continuous video source. A still image or simple visual loop can provide the video track.
- The YouTube stream server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password.
- Permission to stream the playlist’s recordings and compositions in the territories where viewers may watch. Ask rights owners to allowlist your channel through Content ID when applicable.
YouTube’s encoder workflow expects a stream with audio and video. Do not assume an audio-only radio feed is sufficient: verify the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
Set up the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if needed; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or open a live stream in YouTube Studio and copy its server URL and stream key. Store the key securely and do not place it in a public script, repository, or screenshot.
- Choose the stream’s visibility and other event settings in Studio, then keep Live Control Room open for testing and health messages.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest where supported. RTMPS encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube.
Configure FFmpeg for a playlist stream
Prepare audio and video inputs
Make the audio playlist repeat continuously and pair it with a video input, such as a still image or visual loop. Confirm that FFmpeg can read every file and that the playlist does not end unexpectedly. The exact input syntax depends on the media formats and playlist arrangement, so validate your command with your actual files rather than relying on an untested generic command.
Set encoder output parameters
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate and 5 Mbps as the minimum; its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. Lower resolutions need less video bitrate. These figures are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee that a particular VPS network can sustain them.

Choose a bitrate that the VPS can send steadily, including the audio stream and network overhead. Check actual stream health under load; an advertised VPS network rate alone does not show that the connection will sustain a continuous upload.
Send the stream to YouTube
Configure FFmpeg’s output to use the RTMPS server URL and stream key from Studio. Keep credentials out of logs and shell history where possible, restrict access to configuration files, and rotate the key in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. Confirm that the encoder is sending both tracks and that YouTube’s preview receives them before starting a public broadcast.

Keep the VPS process running and plan recovery
Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor so it can be restarted if it exits, and configure FFmpeg reconnect options for the network errors or end-of-file cases they cover. Reconnect flags address specific connection/input failures; they cannot fix an invalid stream key, a missing or damaged media input, or a prolonged VPS/provider outage.
Test recovery deliberately before relying on the setup: interrupt the network connection, restart FFmpeg, and confirm what YouTube shows in Live Control Room. A restart does not guarantee that YouTube preserves the same live event, that playback resumes at the previous playlist position, or that viewers experience no interruption. Configure and verify each recovery path for your own VPS and playlist.

Monitor YouTube and understand archive limits
- Before launch, test representative audio and video and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages.
- Keep Live Control Room available during operation and check the dashboard if the stream stops or health degrades.
- Stopping the encoder ends its contribution to the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an archive will be available for longer sessions.
- Check the stream after any process recovery rather than assuming that a running FFmpeg process means the YouTube event is live and healthy.
Clear music rights before broadcasting
YouTube scans live streams for matching third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder replacing the stream, an interruption, or termination. A licence alone may not prevent this: ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist when needed.
Which permissions apply depends on the playlist, recordings, compositions, territories, and relevant rights holders. Confirm the rights for the actual repertoire and intended audience before streaming; no general VPS or encoder setting substitutes for that clearance.
