You can use an EC2 virtual machine in AWS’s Mumbai region (ap-south-1) to run an encoder and send a continuous live feed to YouTube while your own computer is off. The EC2 instance is still a computer—it is simply hosted remotely. The encoder needs access to authorized source media, plus the stream URL and private stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. A YouTube playlist page by itself is not an encoder input.
What “playlist livestream” means here
A YouTube playlist is a collection of watchable videos. A live encoder sends YouTube a separate, continuous audio/video feed. To loop recordings as a livestream, the encoder running on the server must read the source files or another authorized input and produce that feed; pasting a YouTube playlist URL into an encoder is not the workflow documented by YouTube.
YouTube’s Live API represents the encoder configuration as a liveStream and a scheduled live event as a liveBroadcast. If you want one ongoing loop, plan for an encoder process that can keep reading the media and delivering output. If you instead want separate scheduled sessions, YouTube’s API supports reusing a stream configuration across broadcasts; only one event in that pattern can be live at a time.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your intended start time.
- Source media you are authorized to stream. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for both video and audio, including any game footage, soundtrack, overlays, or other material in the recording. Check YouTube’s current rules before broadcasting; the available guidance here does not establish detailed requirements for continuous streams or reused third-party videos.
- An AWS account and an EC2 instance in Mumbai. AWS identifies the region as
ap-south-1. The right instance size depends on the media format and the output quality you intend to stream. - An encoder that can run unattended and read your files. Choose and test one for your media, codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether software encoding is sufficient. The workflow does not have one universally suitable EC2 size or encoder configuration.
- Your YouTube stream URL and private stream key. Get them in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots, shared scripts, or logs.
Set up the stream from AWS Mumbai
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. Allow for YouTube’s stated first-time activation delay of up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule a live event. Open YouTube Studio / Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Locate the stream URL and stream key, and keep the key private.
- Launch an EC2 instance in Mumbai. Select AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai), region code
ap-south-1. AWS offers multiple general-purpose and compute-optimized EC2 families there, but that alone does not determine which size will handle your workload. Decide after testing the actual source format, intended resolution and frame rate, encoding method, and continuous runtime. - Install and configure the encoder. Set it up to read the authorized media reliably and produce a continuous output. Configure the encoder with the YouTube server URL and stream key, following the selected encoder’s documented controls and the options available in Live Control Room. Do not assume a YouTube watch-playlist URL can stand in for source files or an encoder input.
- Start output and verify the preview. Start the encoder, then check the preview and stream status in Live Control Room. Confirm that both picture and sound are present before relying on the broadcast as an unattended loop.
- Make it recoverable. Configure process supervision and restart behavior, monitor the encoder and source-file availability, and plan for reconnects if delivery is interrupted. These are operating precautions, not a guarantee that a particular instance or setup will remain uninterrupted.
Choose settings and ingest protocol deliberately
Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate
There is no single safe EC2 size or universal bitrate in the available specifications for this workflow. Select the target resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate based on your media and the selected encoder’s supported settings, then test the complete path to YouTube. Also test whether the instance can encode the chosen output continuously; a setting that works for a short preview may not be suitable for an unattended stream.

RTMP-style encoder workflow versus HLS ingest
For a basic encoder workflow, use a protocol supported by both the chosen encoder and YouTube Live Control Room. HLS is an alternative, not a default requirement for a simple loop. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies 1–4 second media segments, TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, no byte-range mode, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. It also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments.
In this context, an HLS media playlist sequences the segments sent by the encoder. It is not the same thing as a YouTube playlist of watchable videos. If you choose HLS, make sure the encoder is configured for YouTube’s stated ingest requirements rather than assuming that any HLS output will work.

Keep the loop running when you are away
- Process restarts: Decide how the encoder should be restarted if it exits and verify that the restart mechanism actually works.
- Reconnects: Plan how the encoder will resume delivery after a dropped connection, and check Live Control Room after a reconnect rather than assuming the broadcast recovered as intended.
- Source access: Keep the files or other authorized input available to the encoder. A missing, moved, or unreadable source can stop the loop even if the instance is running.
- Key security: Store the stream key so only people and processes that need it can access it. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s available controls to replace it and update the encoder.
- Archive expectations: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on automatic archive availability for a longer session based on that guidance.

Estimate AWS cost before leaving it on
There is no defensible fixed monthly total without assumptions about the EC2 instance, operating hours, storage, outgoing transfer, codec, resolution, bitrate, and any managed media services. AWS offers on-demand and commitment pricing models, but those facts do not establish a current instance-specific Mumbai price or the full cost of this workflow.
Use the AWS Pricing Calculator with the Mumbai region, a named instance, storage, transfer estimates, and the hours you expect it to run; verify the rates when you configure the service. Include the costs of keeping source media accessible and sending the stream, not just the virtual machine. If you need help operating cloud infrastructure, consider optional cloud setup support; the appropriate scope depends on your workload.
