You cannot guarantee that a YouTube property tour will never disconnect, but you can reduce avoidable failures: test the connection at the property, choose a bitrate it can sustain, rehearse the actual walk-through, and monitor YouTube Live Control Room. For a computer encoder, use Ethernet when practical; for a phone, check coverage along the entire route. Set up and test a backup path before tour day rather than improvising during a drop.
Choose a streaming setup that fits the tour
A phone is convenient for moving through rooms, but its connection depends on Wi-Fi or cellular coverage wherever you walk. A computer encoder can provide a more controlled setup, particularly with a wired Ethernet connection, but requires more equipment and a rehearsed way to move or position the camera. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer livestreaming and advises mobile streamers to stay in a strong-signal area. Neither approach guarantees uninterrupted streaming. See YouTube’s advice on live streaming and filming.
- Walking with a phone: Check the signal throughout the property, not just where you plan to start. If coverage drops in a hallway, basement, or back room, adjust the route or plan another connection before going live.
- Computer and encoder: Use Ethernet if available, and rehearse camera movement, audio, and the encoder arrangement. A cable should be long enough to reach the intended position without creating a trip hazard; check that the computer has a compatible port or adapter.
Test the upload connection at the property
The relevant connection is the outbound upload from the actual tour location. YouTube advises allowing capacity for Primary + Backup + 20% when calculating the required connection capacity. Treat a speed-test result as a snapshot: run it at the property, near the time you expect to stream, and consider other people or devices sharing the connection. A single upload-speed number cannot guarantee a stable tour, because the chosen bitrate, backup feed, connection variation, and competing network use all matter.
- Run an upload speed test from the property where you will stream.
- Note other network use expected during the tour, including video calls, uploads, and household or office traffic.
- Choose a video setting whose encoder bitrate leaves room for the primary stream, any backup feed, and the additional 20% margin recommended by YouTube.
- If using mobile data, walk the planned route and check signal in each area where you intend to speak or show footage.
YouTube’s connection guidance is at its live streaming setup and filming page.

Set a sustainable resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically more reliable. Select the quality your connection can sustain rather than the highest setting available. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives the following recommended bitrates; they are encoder settings, not minimum internet-plan speeds.
| Video setting | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | not stated (YouTube Help) |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are examples from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, whose page does not state a publication year. Your encoder must support the selected codec and YouTube’s ingestion method. YouTube’s guidance allows H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 depending on the method and encoder support, recommends constant bitrate, and specifies a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). For RTMP/RTMPS, it recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through Google’s servers. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring an encoder.

Rehearse the actual property tour
A test should resemble the stream, not just confirm that the camera can turn on. YouTube says: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Use an unlisted test if you want to keep the rehearsal off the public channel.
- Walk the planned route at a representative pace and check the image in bright and dim areas.
- Speak from the places where you expect to narrate; check that audio remains clear as you move.
- Use the planned camera, microphone, network, resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder settings.
- Watch both the encoder preview and the YouTube player. Confirm that the sound and picture reach the player, not only the local preview.
See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for its test recommendation.

Prepare the event and backup before tour day
- Confirm livestream eligibility. Check that the channel is eligible to livestream and decide whether you will use a phone, webcam, or encoder. YouTube describes encoder streaming as suitable for higher-production-value events, while noting that expensive equipment is not required to get started. Its computer guidance is at YouTube’s live encoder setup page.
- Set up the event and encoder early. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours ahead and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Use that time to confirm the event and stream connection rather than waiting until the tour begins. See YouTube’s live streaming production checklist.
- Verify the public viewing path. Open the event from the channel or watch page and check it on a mobile device as well as in the encoder preview.
- Check local recording. If recording locally, confirm the file is being created and its size is growing. A local archive can help distinguish a camera or encoder problem from a problem sending the stream out.
- Test encoder failover, if configured. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable during rehearsal to check whether the player switches to the backup. This verifies the configured path under that test; it does not guarantee perfect takeover in every outage.
Monitor stream health and identify where the failure is
Keep YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health visible if possible, and respond to its specific status or error message rather than changing several settings at random. YouTube distinguishes an issue affecting one viewer, which may be on that viewer’s device or network, from errors reported by many viewers on different connections, which can point to the encoder or outgoing feed.
- Only one viewer reports buffering: Ask them to check their connection or try another device or viewing method. Do not assume the broadcast is offline if other viewers can watch normally.
- Many viewers on separate connections report trouble: Check Live Control Room, encoder health, CPU load, and outbound connectivity.
- Preview or local recording already looks or sounds wrong: Inspect the camera, microphone, source path, encoder errors, and CPU load. The problem may be upstream of YouTube.
- Preview and local recording look healthy, but the stream fails: Investigate the connection sending the feed out and the specific Live Control Room error.
