To run an animated story stream continuously with FFmpeg, prepare a video or compatible playlist, send it to your platform’s ingest endpoint with the right codecs and bitrate, and supervise FFmpeg so it can be restarted and monitored. The sample below is a starting point for YouTube Live—not a universal production command. A continuous feed can also outlast YouTube’s ability to archive it, so plan a local recording if you need a complete copy.
What “24/7” means for an animated story stream
A 24/7 stream is a continuous chain: FFmpeg reads media, optionally filters it, encodes and packages it, then sends it to a platform ingest endpoint. It does not mean YouTube will necessarily preserve the entire broadcast as one archive. A single repeated animation is simplest; a playlist is better when stories need to rotate or change over time.
Decide whether you need one uninterrupted live session or shorter scheduled sessions, and whether a full local archive matters. Those choices affect playlist transitions, recovery procedures, disk use, and YouTube’s archive behavior.
Prepare and inspect the story assets
Make the files consistent before putting them on air. Check dimensions, frame rate, video pixel format, audio stream presence, and duration. An animated story may have no audio; if so, do not assume the sample command below is suitable without adding an audio source or configuring the output for the platform’s requirements.

Use ffprobe from the same FFmpeg installation to inspect a file:
ffprobe -hide_banner -show_streams -show_format story.mp4
Look for the video and audio streams, codec, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and duration. Test a short segment on the installed FFmpeg build and inspect both picture and sound, especially at loop points. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly, so confirm that options you intend to use are supported by your installed version: FFmpeg documentation.
Loop one rendered story video with FFmpeg
For one prepared file, -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely. This illustrative command targets YouTube-style RTMPS ingest using H.264 video and AAC audio:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i story.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST-URL/STREAM-KEY'
Replace the ingest URL and key with the values supplied by your platform. The example assumes a source with usable audio, a 30 fps target, and a destination that accepts H.264/AAC in FLV over RTMPS. It is not a tested, universally production-ready command: adjust frame rate, keyframe interval, bitrate control, and ingest options to match the destination and your source.
-rereads the input at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely.-tune stillimagecan suit largely static imagery, but evaluate the result on your animation.-pix_fmt yuv420pis a broadly compatible output choice; confirm the platform’s current requirements.-r 30requests 30 fps output and-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which at 30 fps is a two-second keyframe interval.- The command does not set an explicit video bitrate. Choose one appropriate to the destination, output size, frame rate, and available upload capacity.
Keep the stream key private: do not put it in a public script repository, paste it into public logs, or expose it in screenshots. Restrict access to the machine and configuration that contain it, and replace the key if it is exposed.
Choose output settings for YouTube Live
Settings are platform-specific. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance calls for H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR); it recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Verify current platform guidance before launch, since ingest recommendations can change: YouTube Help: Live encoder settings.

| YouTube H.264 example | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of quality or universal requirements. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload headroom beyond the stream bitrate; its streaming tips warn, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Check sustained upload capacity rather than relying on a single speed test, and account for other devices sharing the connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube streaming tips.
Choose resolution and frame rate the encoder can sustain. A higher output setting cannot restore detail absent from the source, and it increases the amount of data you must deliver reliably. If CPU capacity is insufficient, investigate supported hardware encoding on the host, but test the selected encoder and output before relying on it unattended.
Loop a changing playlist of story files
If stories need to rotate, create a concat-demuxer list file such as stories.txt:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
file 'story-01.mp4'
file 'story-02.mp4'
file 'story-03.mp4'
Then loop the list as the input:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i stories.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST-URL/STREAM-KEY'
This is a starting point, not a guarantee that files will join cleanly. The concat demuxer works best when inputs have compatible stream layouts and timing. Validate every join for black frames, audio gaps, abrupt changes, or timestamp problems. If sources differ and must be normalized, use a concat filter and re-encode; FFmpeg’s FAQ says the concat filter is recommended when re-encoding is needed: FFmpeg FAQ.
Choose a single rendered file when it already contains the desired sequence and seamless repetition matters. Choose a playlist when you want to rotate assets without rebuilding one long render, accepting that each transition needs testing. Stream copying avoids encoding only when the source streams already meet the destination’s codec, format, and timing needs; re-encoding gives control over output settings but consumes CPU or supported hardware-encoder capacity.

- Alert on FFmpeg exiting, loss of ingest, and low disk space.
- Keep a backup of source assets and the configuration needed to restart the stream.
- If recording locally, rotate files and monitor storage so the disk cannot fill unnoticed.
- Test the restart path and verify the stream resumes with moving video and audible audio before leaving it unattended.
- A UPS can help with power continuity for the streaming computer, but it cannot solve an internet outage or a platform-side failure.
For YouTube, use Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health information during setup; confirm the picture and sound before the public broadcast. Monitor the process and any local recording after launch rather than treating a successful initial connection as proof that the stream will remain healthy.
Why a 24/7 YouTube stream may not be archived
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuously running broadcast therefore is not a dependable substitute for a local master recording. If archive completeness matters, record locally or plan intentional shorter sessions and verify the resulting archives. Check YouTube’s current guidance because archive behavior is platform-specific and can change: YouTube Help: archive live streams.
Troubleshooting FFmpeg live loops
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits immediately | Invalid input path, unsupported option, or malformed ingest address | Read the first FFmpeg error, confirm paths and installed option support, and test with a short local output before connecting to the platform. |
| Platform reports no signal or rejects the stream | Wrong ingest URL or key, or incompatible codec/container settings | Copy the current ingest details from the platform and compare output video/audio codecs and protocol with its encoder guidance. |
| Video stutters or the live connection drops | Insufficient sustained upload capacity, unstable connection, or encoding overload | Check stream bitrate against available upload with headroom, inspect FFmpeg logs and host load, then reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed. |
| No sound, or silence at each join | Source has no audio, audio settings do not match, or playlist transitions contain gaps | Inspect streams with ffprobe; test audio and each join. Add an audio source or configure the output appropriately if the platform requires audio. |
| Black frames or jumps between stories | Incompatible dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, or transition content | Normalize sources through filtering and re-encoding where needed, then review the complete playlist loop before going live. |
| The broadcast is live but the archive is incomplete or absent | The uninterrupted stream exceeded YouTube’s archive capture window | Use local recording when a complete archive is important, or schedule sessions within YouTube’s stated archive guidance. |
