Run your encoder inside a tmux session on the VPS, then detach from that session before closing SSH. The encoder can keep running after your SSH connection ends. This protects against a lost terminal connection; it does not restart an encoder that crashes or recover it after a VPS reboot.
Keep the encoder running when SSH disconnects
Start tmux on the Indian VPS itself, not just on your own computer. A tmux session is designed to survive an accidental SSH disconnection and can be reattached later. The Linux man-pages project documents this behavior in its tmux(1) manual.
- Connect to the VPS: SSH into the server and confirm that
tmuxis installed. If it is not, install it using the package manager for your VPS’s Linux distribution. - Create a named session: Run
tmux new -s youtube. - Start the encoder inside tmux: Launch your encoder from this terminal and configure it with the YouTube server URL and stream key for the stream you created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Detach without stopping the encoder: Press Ctrl+B, release the keys, then press D. The session remains on the VPS.
- Disconnect SSH: You can now close the SSH connection. The encoder process continues as long as the VPS, encoder and network remain operational.
- Reconnect and inspect it later: SSH into the same VPS and run
tmux attach -t youtube. You can check the encoder output and whether it is still running.
YouTube describes the stream key as the credential used by the encoder to send a feed to the right stream. Treat it like a password; do not publish or share it. YouTube’s instructions for creating an encoder stream are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
What tmux protects—and what it does not

If you need automatic recovery after a crash or reboot, a service manager is a separate approach from tmux. Its configuration depends on the VPS’s Linux distribution and service setup; verify and test the exact restart behavior on your server rather than assuming tmux supplies it.

Set up YouTube ingest and check reliability
Use the correct stream URL and key
Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then enter its server URL and stream key in your encoder. YouTube notes that a custom stream key can be reused. Keep the key private because it authorizes the encoder feed.
Preview, monitor and test before relying on the stream
- Preview the encoder feed in YouTube before the event and check the stream-health information while it is running.
- Use a reliable VPS network connection with enough upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Follow its current guidance for codec, keyframe interval and bitrate, choosing settings supported by your encoder and available upload bandwidth: YouTube live encoder settings.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover in advance—for example, by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network—and confirm what viewers and YouTube Studio show.
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Indian VPS has sufficient or stable outbound capacity. Check the server’s actual network performance and the provider’s terms for sustained encoder traffic.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops after SSH closes
- The encoder stops as soon as SSH closes: It may have been started outside tmux, or tmux may have been running on your local computer rather than the VPS. SSH back in and start the encoder from a tmux session on the server.
- You cannot find the session: Reconnect to the same VPS account and host, then try
tmux attach -t youtube. If the session has ended, tmux cannot restore the encoder process; inspect the VPS and encoder logs before starting it again. - The session is open but YouTube is not receiving video: Check the encoder output, network connection, stream URL and stream key. A live tmux terminal does not mean the encoder-to-YouTube connection is healthy.
- The encoder stopped after a VPS restart: tmux alone does not start processes at boot. Configure a suitable service startup and restart policy for your operating system, then test it with a planned restart.
- The feed returns but the YouTube event does not behave as expected: Check the live event’s state in YouTube Studio. Stopping encoder content ends the stream, so plan restarts around the event rather than assuming unlimited resumption.
