Buy the exact game before its Game Pass departure date if you want to keep playing it. A download made through Game Pass is access through the subscription, not a purchase. Xbox’s catalog advertises a member discount of up to 20% on games that are leaving, although the actual offer depends on the title, region, plan, platform and date. If you do not want to buy, move the game to the top of your play queue and finish it before access ends. If you already own it, check whether it is listed in Xbox’s current Stream your own game collection for Game Pass Ultimate on a supported device.
What changes when a game leaves Game Pass?
Game Pass is a rotating catalog. Xbox says titles sometimes leave as other games are added, so being installed on your console or PC does not turn the subscription license into permanent ownership. When the catalog license ends, you need another qualifying license to continue playing the title.

The practical distinction is simple:
- Installed through Game Pass: the installation is not proof that you bought the game. Once catalog access ends, the game can require a purchase or another valid entitlement.
- Purchased from the Xbox or Microsoft Store: the purchased title remains associated with the account that bought it, subject to the edition, platform and store terms shown at checkout.
- Owned elsewhere: a disc or another legitimate license is separate from Game Pass access. You still need the correct edition and platform entitlement to launch the game on the device you use.
Xbox’s current catalog presents a Leaving soon collection and describes those entries as titles scheduled to exit within the next two weeks. The dates and visible games can differ by time, region, membership and platform, so use the listing shown for your account rather than relying on a screenshot or an old article. Open the live catalog at Xbox Game Pass games and check the title’s own page.

Use the Leaving soon collection
On the catalog page, open Leaving soon and select the game you care about. Confirm that the title appears for your membership and the platform on which you play. A game can be available on one platform or plan and absent on another, and the catalog can change after you check it.

Xbox’s older Game Pass guide explains that members receive advance notice and directs them to the mobile app, the Xbox app on Windows 10, or the Game Pass section on console. Its wording was “We’ll give you a couple weeks’ notice before a game leaves,” in a November 17, 2020 guide. Treat that as the policy description from that date, not as a guarantee that every future departure will have exactly the same notice period. Check notifications and official updates
Enable notifications in the Xbox mobile app if you want an additional reminder, and check the Game Pass catalog or Xbox Wire announcements when a departure matters to you. Notifications are a convenience, not a substitute for opening the title page: the exact date, edition and platform availability are what determine your decision.
The reliable way to keep playing: buy the exact game
1. Open the title’s store page
From the Leaving soon listing, open the exact game in the Xbox or Microsoft Store. Do not assume that a similarly named bundle, deluxe edition, add-on or sequel grants the license you need. Read the product name, edition, platform and included content shown on that page.

2. Confirm that the game is still purchasable
A Game Pass departure and a store delisting are separate events. Before you plan to “buy it later,” verify that the game has a purchase option now. Xbox’s December 3, 2024 announcement about Forza Horizon 4 illustrates the risk: Xbox said that title would leave both Game Pass and the Xbox/Microsoft Stores on December 15, 2024. That was a dated example, not a rule about every game, but it shows why the store page must be checked before the catalog deadline. See the announcement at Xbox Wire’s December 2024 Game Pass update.
3. Compare the displayed price and member offer
The current catalog tells members they can buy a departing game and save up to 20% with the member discount. “Up to” is a ceiling, not a fixed discount on every title. The percentage, final price, taxes, currency and eligibility can vary by game, region, plan, platform and time. Only the offer displayed on the checkout page establishes what you will pay.

Make sure the account signed in to the store is the account that should own the game. A family member’s profile, a different Microsoft account or a different storefront can produce a different entitlement. Keep the order confirmation so you can identify the edition if the title later appears under more than one product listing.
4. Complete the purchase before the catalog date
Finish checkout while the title is still listed as available for purchase. The key action is purchasing the exact title, not merely installing it, adding it to a wishlist or keeping the Game Pass version on your drive. After purchase, launch the game using the account that owns the license and allow the console or Xbox app to refresh its entitlements.

Choose among buying, finishing, and streaming
Your best choice depends on how much of the game remains, whether it is still sold, and whether you already own it outside Game Pass. Use this comparison before the departure date.

Streaming is not a way to preserve a Game Pass-only license. Xbox describes Stream your own game as an expanding collection for Ultimate members who own the game, and directs players to check which titles work on supported devices. It does not promise that every game removed from the catalog can be streamed. Check the current collection and device support before relying on this option. If you are not buying, put the game first in your queue
When a purchase is not worthwhile, the only dependable Game Pass strategy is to complete the game before its listed exit. Xbox specifically recommends moving a departing title up the play queue. Pause optional downloads, start the game from your installed library and set a personal finish date earlier than the catalog date so you have time to handle updates or interruptions.
- Write down the catalog departure date and the last day you realistically expect to play.
- Prioritize the main campaign or the content you most want to experience before spending time on lower-priority activities.
- Keep enough storage free for updates; an installed title can still need a patch before it launches.
- Do not wait until the final hours to make a purchase decision. Store availability can be different from catalog availability, as the Forza Horizon 4 example demonstrates.
Xbox’s April 2, 2025 departure post provides a useful illustration of how these notices are presented. It listed seven games—Botany Manor, Coral Island, Harold Halibut, Homestead Arcana, Kona, Orcs Must Die! 3 and Turbo Golf Racing—as leaving on April 15 and reminded members about the 20% purchase discount. Those games and that date are historical examples, not a current departure list. Do not use an old Xbox Wire article to infer today’s schedule.
Check the edition, platform and region before paying
Edition
Standard, deluxe, complete and bundle products can be separate store entries. Buy the edition that matches the content you have been playing if you need existing add-ons or saved progress to line up. If the store shows several products, read the included-content description rather than selecting the first similarly named result.
Platform
Confirm whether you play on Xbox console, Windows PC or another supported Xbox ecosystem. A license shown for one platform may not provide the entitlement you expect on another. The catalog itself warns that availability varies by platform, so use the platform filter and the product page for the device you will keep using.
Region and account
Prices, departure dates, catalog membership and purchase availability can vary by region. The US catalog URL is useful as a reference, but readers elsewhere should switch to their local Xbox storefront. Sign in with the account that will own and launch the game; buying on a different account can leave the playing profile without the expected entitlement.

What the sources do—and do not—establish about save data
Do not assume that every save will behave identically after a Game Pass departure. The available Xbox information does not establish a universal rule covering every game, tier, platform, edition, launcher and cancellation scenario. A purchased copy may use the same account and cloud ecosystem, but the sources do not guarantee that every save transfers or remains usable in every case.
Before the game leaves, note the account and platform you use and allow the game to finish any synchronization it reports. If you later buy the title, launch it from that same account and verify your save in the game before deleting the installed version. If the save is missing, stop before overwriting files and use the game’s official support route for that title; there is no single Xbox-wide promise that resolves every save situation.

The game is installed but asks you to buy it
This usually means the installation came from the catalog and the account has not acquired a purchase license. Open the store page, check that you bought the correct edition, sign in with the purchasing account and refresh the console or Xbox app. An installation alone is not ownership.
The discount is smaller than expected or missing
“Up to 20%” does not mean every title receives 20%. Check the membership attached to the account, the region and the exact product page. If the page shows no member offer, treat the displayed checkout price as the applicable price; do not infer a discount from an older announcement.

Do not assume that it will return after leaving Game Pass. A store delisting can occur at the same time as, or separately from, catalog removal. The safest response is to decide while the purchase listing is visible and to check official Xbox communications for the title’s specific status.

The game is missing from Leaving soon
Catalog listings are time-, region-, plan- and platform-dependent. Verify that you are signed in to the intended account, select the correct platform and open the live catalog rather than relying on a cached list. Absence from one view is not evidence that the title will remain indefinitely.
You want to use streaming after removal
First confirm that you own the game, have Game Pass Ultimate and use a supported device. Then check whether the title is in the current Stream your own game collection. The feature is conditional and does not cover every removed Game Pass game.
A practical decision checklist
- Open the live Xbox Game Pass catalog and select Leaving soon.
- Open the game’s listing and record the departure date shown for your region, membership and platform.
- Decide whether you can finish the game before that date; if yes, move it to the top of your queue.
- If not, open the exact Xbox or Microsoft Store product page and verify purchase availability.
- Match the edition, platform, region and Microsoft account to the copy you intend to keep.
- Review the title-specific price and any member offer; Xbox’s published maximum is up to 20%, not a guaranteed percentage.
- Complete the purchase before the catalog deadline if continued access matters.
- If you already own the title, check the current Stream your own game list for Ultimate and your supported device.
- Before changing installations, let the game synchronize and verify the save under the owning account.
Why “I’ll buy it later” can fail
Game Pass availability and store availability are related but not identical. Most departures require a decision about whether to purchase before the title exits, and the exact store status is title-specific. The Forza Horizon 4 announcement from December 2024 is the clearest documented warning: Xbox announced that it would leave both stores and Game Pass on the same date. That does not predict another game’s future, but it rules out treating post-removal purchase as a safe assumption.

Likewise, an old departure notice cannot establish a current date. The April 2025 list and the November 2020 guide are useful examples of Xbox’s communication, while the live catalog is the place to verify what applies now.
Bottom line for your next Game Pass departure
Use the live Leaving soon collection, decide before the listed date, and buy the exact title if you want dependable continued access. The catalog download does not become a permanent license, and Xbox’s “up to 20%” member discount must be confirmed on the individual store page. If you do not buy, finish the game before removal; if you already own it, streaming is available only when the title appears in the current supported collection for Game Pass Ultimate. Check store availability, because a game can leave Game Pass and the store together.
