FFmpeg publishes your video to the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; systemd can start it at boot and restart it if the process exits. Neither tool guarantees that the video, network connection or YouTube broadcast is healthy, so you must check the stream in YouTube as well as the host logs.
What a headless YouTube stream needs
“Headless” means the encoder runs without a graphical desktop; it does not mean there is no computer or server. The host still needs access to the video, enough processing capacity for the selected encoding, and a stable upload connection. FFmpeg can publish a file in real time using the RTMP family of protocols. Use the exact ingest URL and key supplied for your YouTube stream, rather than the example server in FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

- A Linux host that can stay on and reach YouTube’s ingest service.
- FFmpeg and a local video file or prepared playlist.
- A YouTube Live stream with its ingest URL and stream key.
- A process supervisor, such as systemd, for boot startup and process restarts.

Prepare the YouTube stream and media
Get the stream credentials
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live, then select an existing stream or create one.
- Open the stream’s Stream settings. YouTube displays an RTMP URL by default. If your encoder supports encrypted ingest, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL as described in YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Copy the stream key separately. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a repository, public script, screenshot or log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
Choose a compatible format and bitrate
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and must not exceed four seconds. Match the chosen settings to the input media and the host’s stable upload capacity; YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them.

YouTube also lists audio sample rates of 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1, with audio bitrates of 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. Consult the live YouTube recommended encoder settings if you need settings for a different codec or format.

Normalize prerecorded clips
For a playlist, normalize the clips to consistent video and audio parameters before scheduling them. A mismatched source can create playback or transition problems even if FFmpeg starts successfully. Test the complete sequence, including its order and loop behavior, before making it unattended. For a single file, FFmpeg’s real-time file-publishing pattern is ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream; replace the example server with the correct YouTube ingest URL and provide your stream key securely. This example illustrates the publishing pattern; it is not a complete production command with your codec and rate-control settings. Run FFmpeg as a supervised background service
Do not rely on an interactive SSH session to keep the encoder alive. Configure a system-level service to run FFmpeg under a dedicated, unprivileged account, with an explicit working directory, a restart policy and logs sent to the system journal. Keep the key in a protected configuration or credential mechanism rather than a world-readable unit file or shell history. Exact systemd unit syntax and secret-storage options depend on the host’s distribution and configuration, so validate the setup against its documentation rather than copying an unreviewed unit into production.

A restart policy helps when the FFmpeg process exits; it is not a full stream-recovery system. It cannot fix a wrong key, invalid media, a broken network route or every YouTube broadcast lifecycle state. Keep host-side supervision and YouTube-side monitoring as separate checks.
Start the stream and verify it end to end
- Start the service and inspect its journal output for startup errors, input problems and connection failures.
- Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview appears and that YouTube reports the stream as healthy before relying on it.
- Check the health details, not just the service’s active state. YouTube’s Live API health diagnostics can flag low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing audio, unsupported video codec, GOP errors and starved video ingestion. See the Live Streaming API documentation.
- Confirm that the public broadcast is live when intended. YouTube’s live stream resource and the broadcast viewers see are distinct resources, so a running encoder process alone does not establish that viewers have a working stream.
Plan for restarts, long broadcasts and archives
A service manager can relaunch an exited FFmpeg process, but it cannot ensure that the next connection will succeed or that the broadcast remains live. Check logs after a restart and verify the new preview and stream status in YouTube. For unattended use, decide who or what will notice a failed connection, a bad key, an expired or changed stream configuration, or an unhealthy broadcast.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its documentation describes broadcast conversion after a stream ends and notes that the completed video may not be immediately available.
