You can keep a YouTube ambient stream running without leaving a PC on, but the right method depends on what you are streaming. For a live scene—such as an aquarium or a real-world view—use a phone or a suitable standalone encoder. For prerecorded footage you want to loop continuously, use a cloud streaming service designed for that purpose. YouTube lists Gyre as one option for 24/7 prerecorded streams; StreamNeo is another cloud option for uploaded videos.

YouTube describes mobile streaming as useful for quick updates and encoder streaming as suitable for feeds using external hardware. Those are different workflows: a live camera scene needs a live video input, while a prerecorded 24/7 stream needs a system that can keep replaying media without depending on a home computer. How to livestream a real ambient scene without a PC
Option 1: Use YouTube on a phone or tablet
This is the most direct route when the camera itself is the source—for example, a live view of a room, garden or aquarium. YouTube’s mobile eligibility requirements, as stated on its help page accessed in 2026, include at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a supported device. The cited page lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later. YouTube says the first mobile livestream may take up to 24 hours to become available after enabling the feature. Requirements can change, so confirm the current rules for your account and location on YouTube’s mobile streaming help page.
- Confirm that your channel meets YouTube’s current mobile livestream requirements and that live streaming is enabled.
- Open the YouTube app on your supported phone or tablet and start a mobile livestream using the app’s available live controls.
- Position and power the device for the intended duration, and use a stable connection. Keep an eye on the stream rather than assuming a phone broadcast will recover unattended from every interruption.
- Check the stream’s preview and audio before relying on it. YouTube recommends checking quality and accessibility before and during a stream in its live streaming tips.
This approach broadcasts what the phone camera sees; the official mobile requirements page does not establish a way to loop prerecorded footage through the YouTube app as an always-on stream.

Option 2: Use a standalone encoder with a live input
A standalone encoder can replace a PC in a workflow that has a live camera or other supported live source. YouTube’s encoder guide explains how to create a stream and enter its server URL and stream key in an encoder, but it does not validate a particular hardware model or establish that an encoder can continuously loop a video file on its own. Confirm that a device supports your specific live source and operating plan before buying it.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key.
- Connect the live video source to the encoder according to that device’s instructions, then enter the YouTube server URL and key in its streaming settings.
- Review YouTube’s stream settings, including auto-start and auto-stop if you intend to use them, and test the feed before relying on it.
- Check the preview and monitor the broadcast for picture, sound and connection problems. YouTube advises monitoring quality; the cited guidance does not establish that any setup is failure-proof.
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Keep it private and replace it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s live stream settings help and its encoder instructions.

How to keep prerecorded ambient footage streaming 24/7
For a pre-recorded rain scene, fireplace, aquarium recording or other ambient video, use a cloud service that can play uploaded footage continuously. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 livestreaming of prerecorded video without a dedicated PC. Check Gyre’s current availability, features and terms directly; the YouTube page does not provide a comparative price or a comprehensive service review.

Plan for stream interruptions and replays
Unattended operation still needs a recovery plan
A phone, encoder or cloud service can lose its connection or stop sending video. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream, but its cited guidance does not promise that any method is immune to failure. For a broadcast that must stay up, test the complete setup, check how it behaves after a connection interruption, and decide how you will notice and respond if the feed stops.

A 24/7 stream may not give you a complete replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited help pages do not establish that a single uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will be archived, so do not count on a complete replay of a continuous 24/7 broadcast. If you need an archive, plan a separate recording or shorter-session approach and verify the result with a test stream. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

- You cannot start a mobile stream: check channel verification, subscriber eligibility, live-streaming enablement, recent restrictions and device support. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder does not connect: confirm that you selected the intended YouTube stream and copied the matching server URL and stream key correctly. Keep the key private.
- A prerecorded file will not loop: a live-input encoder or the YouTube mobile app is not established by these YouTube help pages as a 24/7 prerecorded-video loop solution. Use a cloud service that explicitly supports prerecorded streaming.
- The feed stops or quality changes: inspect the source, network and streaming service, then check the preview and monitor the stream. Do not assume automatic recovery unless the service documents that capability.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee for one uninterrupted stream longer than that.
Copyright and channel suitability
Only stream footage and audio you have the rights to use. Ambient music, television audio, or clips captured in the background can create copyright problems even when the video is intended as a static or relaxing scene. Repeating a prerecorded video does not itself establish that the content meets YouTube’s policies or qualifies for monetization. Review the current rules that apply to your channel and content before broadcasting.
