To loop a video file as a continuous YouTube Live stream from a VPS, the server must expose a supported NVIDIA GPU and driver, and its FFmpeg build must include NVENC. Create a YouTube Live stream, then use FFmpeg to loop the file, encode it to a profile YouTube accepts, and send it over RTMPS. A looping command alone is not a complete 24/7 reliability setup: test the actual VPS, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and arrange process restarts and logging.
What must be in place before you start
NVENC is NVIDIA’s dedicated hardware video-encoding block. Whether FFmpeg can use it depends on the actual host, driver, runtime access to the GPU, and FFmpeg build—not simply on a VPS plan’s name or the presence of an FFmpeg binary. Confirm these on the instance where the stream will run.
- A VPS or container that exposes a compatible NVIDIA GPU and working driver.
- An FFmpeg build that exposes the encoder you intend to use, such as
h264_nvenc. - A local video file with the video and audio streams you expect to broadcast.
- A YouTube Live destination, including its ingest URL and protected stream key.
- Sustained outbound network capacity above the chosen video bitrate, with headroom.
A CPU-only VPS can use software encoding, but that is not an NVENC setup. The performance of software encoding on a particular VPS is not established here.
Check that the VPS can use NVENC
- List the GPUs visible to the instance. Run
nvidia-smi -L. If no GPU is listed, check that the instance or container exposes the device; a provider’s plan label alone does not establish GPU access. - Check FFmpeg’s encoders. Run
ffmpeg -hide_banner -encodersand look forh264_nvenc. NVIDIA also documentshevc_nvencandav1_nvenc, but the selected GPU, driver, FFmpeg build, and intended YouTube ingest profile must support the encoder you choose. - Run a real encode test on that VPS. Confirm that FFmpeg can initialize the encoder and produce output with the instance’s installed driver and permissions. NVIDIA recommends testing hardware-accelerated transcoding after configuring the FFmpeg binary.
- If there are multiple GPUs, select and verify the intended device. NVIDIA documents GPU listing with
nvidia-smi -Land device selection with FFmpeg’s-hwaccel_deviceoption. A simple encode test remains important even when a device is visible.
FFmpeg’s hardware-acceleration documentation cautions that runtime availability depends on suitable hardware and a suitable driver. If initialization fails, investigate driver compatibility and whether the process has permission to access the GPU.

Create the YouTube Live destination and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its Live Control Room details.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key supplied for that stream. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password and address: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it.
- Pass the destination to FFmpeg using RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended encrypted protocol. Use the actual destination details YouTube provides; the path format can vary by stream.
- Keep the key out of public scripts, repositories, and logs. Store it in a protected configuration or environment, and restrict access to the process that needs it.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration to use the replacement.
Choose a YouTube-compatible output profile
For a straightforward SDR starting profile, use H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), 30 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and sets four seconds as the maximum. YouTube’s current live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, gives these H.264 bitrate figures:
| Output profile | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder-setting figures, not a measurement of what a particular VPS can sustain. Choose a bitrate that the server’s outbound connection can maintain reliably, then test before going public. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and documents H.264, H.265, and AV1 options; consult its current profile table when choosing a different codec, resolution, or frame rate. YouTube also notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, so choose latency settings according to whether real-time interaction matters.

For 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to a two-second interval. If you use another frame rate, set the GOP accordingly and verify the resulting interval. YouTube’s encoder help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Loop a file and send it with FFmpeg
The example below assumes /srv/media/loop.mp4 has one video stream and an audio stream that FFmpeg can encode as AAC. Replace the destination placeholder with the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Do not publish a real key in a script or repository.

What the important options do
-rereads the file at its native rate for a live-source workflow.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. It is before-ibecause FFmpeg input options apply to the next input.-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?selects the first video stream and the first audio stream if present. Remove or change the audio mapping if the file has no audio or a different stream layout.-c:v h264_nvencselects NVIDIA’s H.264 encoder. The example’s-preset p4and-tune hqmay vary in availability or behavior by FFmpeg and NVIDIA version; check the installed encoder’s help.-r 30sets the output frame rate to 30 fps.-g 60and-keyint_min 60target a two-second GOP at that frame rate;-sc_threshold 0disables scene-cut keyframe insertion in this example.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset the video bitrate target, maximum rate, and buffer. They do not, by themselves, prove that the encoder is operating in an explicit CBR mode.-pix_fmt yuv420psets a common pixel format for H.264 output.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes audio as AAC at the shown bitrate and sample rate. If you instead use-c:a copy, first confirm that the source audio codec is suitable for the destination.-f flvselects the output container used for this RTMP-family streaming workflow.
To verify the exact rate-control options accepted by your installed build, run ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvenc. FFmpeg and NVIDIA options can vary by build and driver, so explicitly set and check the supported rate-control option if you require CBR rather than assuming the bitrate flags alone guarantee it.
The command is an illustrative starting point, not a tested configuration for every VPS, file, or FFmpeg/NVIDIA version. Check the source streams, run a private or unlisted test, and inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. YouTube advises matching test audio and motion to the intended broadcast and testing before the live stream.

Make the stream operationally continuous
-stream_loop -1 repeats the media while the FFmpeg process remains healthy. It does not restart FFmpeg after a host reboot, recover from every network failure, or alert you when YouTube stops receiving the stream. For a continuous deployment, run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor, configure restart-on-failure, retain logs, and alert on missed restarts or loss of stream health. The exact configuration depends on your Linux distribution and supervisor.
Test reconnect and restart behavior on the actual host before relying on it. Check both the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s Live Control Room: a running process does not by itself prove that YouTube is ingesting a healthy stream.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
nvidia-smi -L shows no GPU |
The VPS or container does not expose an NVIDIA device. | Check the selected instance and device access. Do not assume NVENC is available from the plan name. |
FFmpeg does not list h264_nvenc |
The FFmpeg build may not include the encoder. | Inspect ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders and use a build that exposes NVENC, subject to compatible hardware and drivers. |
| FFmpeg lists NVENC but cannot initialize it | Runtime driver incompatibility, missing device access, or unsuitable hardware. | Check the driver and permissions in the environment where FFmpeg actually runs, then retry an encode test. |
| FFmpeg reports missing audio or produces no sound | The file may have no audio stream, or the mapping/codec choice may not match it. | Inspect the input streams, adjust the optional audio mapping, and encode to AAC if copying the source audio is unsuitable. |
| YouTube reports ingest or stream-health problems | The destination details, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, or network capacity may not match. | Confirm the stream URL and key, compare output settings with YouTube’s current encoder table, check sustained network capacity, and read Live Control Room messages. |
| The stream stops after an error or reboot | The FFmpeg process exited and nothing restarted it. | Use a process supervisor or service manager with restart-on-failure, logs, and alerting; verify recovery behavior on the VPS. |
| The stream key may have leaked | The credential appeared in a public script, repository, or other exposed location. | Reset the key in Live Control Room, then update the protected encoder configuration. |
