Run FFmpeg as a long-lived systemd service with Restart=on-failure and a deliberate RestartSec delay. That makes systemd relaunch FFmpeg after an abnormal exit, but it does not fix a bad stream key, a rejected YouTube ingest, an unsupported option, or a persistent network fault. For stronger recovery, match the remedy to the failure layer: input reconnect options, output recovery, or process supervision.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
With Restart=on-failure, the recovery sequence is simple: FFmpeg exits unsuccessfully, systemd waits for the configured delay, then starts the process again. The systemd service manual recommends this policy for long-running services (systemd.service(5), Debian trixie).
That covers a process failure, not every interruption in a live broadcast. FFmpeg may remain running while an input or output connection is broken. Conversely, a restarted process can fail in exactly the same way if its credentials, destination, or encoding settings are wrong. systemd also applies start-rate limits, so repeated failures may leave a unit in a failed state rather than restarting indefinitely.
Configure a basic systemd service
This illustrative unit shows the core arrangement. It is not a tested drop-in: substitute the FFmpeg binary path, input, destination, and encoding arguments for your setup, and check option syntax against your installed FFmpeg and systemd versions.

Protect the stream key
Replace the example destination with YouTube’s current ingest URL and your stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or place it in a broadly readable unit file. Use an appropriately protected configuration or environment mechanism, and take care that diagnostic logs do not expose it.
Enable and inspect the service
Save the unit under a suitable system service name, such as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. Then load the unit, enable it at boot, start it, and inspect its status and recent log output:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -e
The commands assume a systemd-based Linux host and that you have permission to manage system services. Use journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f to follow new service log entries while diagnosing a run.

Choose restart timing and understand rate limits
Use a measured delay
RestartSec=5 is an example delay, not a universal best value. A short wait can bring a transiently interrupted service back quickly; a longer wait avoids hammering a destination or repeatedly retrying while an upstream problem persists. Choose a delay suited to the failure and your operating environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not disable rate limiting blindly
systemd start-rate limiting uses settings including StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst=. If FFmpeg exits repeatedly within the configured window, systemd can stop attempting starts and mark the unit failed. Exact defaults and behavior depend on the systemd version and configuration, so check the service and unit documentation installed on your host before changing limits. Unlimited rapid retries are not a general solution: they can obscure a persistent error without repairing it.
Choose the restart policy deliberately
For a long-running stream, Restart=on-failure is the recommended starting point in the systemd manual. Restart=always is broader: it also restarts after a clean process exit. Choose it only if a clean exit should also cause another run; it does not make an invalid destination or broken input recoverable.

Match recovery to the failure layer
| Failure layer | Possible mechanism | What it does | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Input connection | FFmpeg protocol reconnect options | Retries supported input connections under specified conditions. | Support and behavior are protocol-specific; an input option does not guarantee reconnect for every source. |
| Output connection | FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery | Can attempt output recovery while FFmpeg remains running. | The documented example is generic RTMP, not validation for a particular YouTube setup or installed build. |
| FFmpeg process | systemd restart policy | Relaunches the process after an eligible exit, subject to delay and start-rate limits. | Does not correct persistent configuration, credential, ingest, or network errors. |
Input reconnect options
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation distinguishes reconnect, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and reconnect_at_eof. They cover different circumstances, and available options depend on the input protocol. The EOF option can be useful for live or endless inputs. Consult the documentation for the protocol you actually use; do not assume an HTTP reconnect flag applies to RTMP or to a capture device (FFmpeg protocol documentation).
These are input-side options. They should not be presented as a way to reconnect an outgoing YouTube RTMP or RTMPS publisher.

Output recovery with the FIFO muxer
When FFmpeg stays alive but output is interrupted, the FIFO muxer offers a separate recovery approach. Its documented options include attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time; an example routes output through -f fifo with -fifo_format flv and recovery parameters for a generic RTMP destination (FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation). Verify the exact options and syntax against the current documentation for your FFmpeg build before relying on them. This is in-process output recovery, not a systemd restart, and the cited example does not establish YouTube-specific behavior.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live ingest. Its encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. Choose bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your particular resolution and frame rate rather than treating one value as universal (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Changing systemd restart behavior will not make an unsupported or mismatched encoder configuration acceptable. Check the current YouTube guidance for your intended format, then make sure the arguments passed to FFmpeg implement those settings.

FFmpeg exits and systemd restarts it
- Inspect
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -eand FFmpeg’s own error output to identify the exit cause. - Confirm the input path is available, the destination and stream key are correct, and the installed FFmpeg build accepts the command-line options.
- If starts stop after repeated failures, inspect the unit’s start-rate limit settings instead of assuming
Restart=on-failureis being ignored.
FFmpeg remains active but YouTube is offline
- Check whether the failure is on the input side or output side before adding reconnect behavior.
- For supported inputs, consult the protocol-specific reconnect documentation. For output interruption, assess whether FIFO recovery fits the build and destination.
- Check YouTube’s live dashboard for ingest status and verify the stream key, protocol, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
The same error returns after every restart
A restart loop is evidence that supervision is working but the underlying failure remains. Use the logs and YouTube’s ingest status to fix the cause; increasing restart frequency cannot repair persistent credentials, network, or configuration problems. No retry mechanism guarantees uninterrupted viewer playback or recovery from invalid credentials and persistent upstream errors.

Test before the scheduled broadcast
YouTube’s instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” (YouTube Help.) Start the service early enough to confirm that FFmpeg reaches YouTube, the dashboard reports the expected ingest, and the service logs remain free of recurring failures. A successful process start alone does not prove viewers can receive a healthy stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a Linux host, systemd unit, reconnect logic, and logs is more work than you want, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube live stream from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; each slot streams the upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI is supported. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
