Use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery for transient faults, a supervisor if FFmpeg exits, and a genuinely independent backup network for a longer broadband outage. Test the complete setup before going live; no one setting guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
First identify what failed
“Internet outage” can mean different things, and the remedy depends on which part stopped working:
- Temporary output-network fault: FFmpeg is still running and producing audio/video, but its connection to YouTube’s ingest server fails. FIFO muxer recovery can attempt to restore the output.
- FFmpeg process exit: The encoder has stopped. A process supervisor can restart it, but restarting FFmpeg does not restore a failed network path.
- Broadband or power outage: If there is no working route to the internet—or the encoder and network equipment lose power—YouTube cannot receive the stream. You need an independent connection and, for a power failure, tested backup power.
YouTube Help warns: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Neither FFmpeg retries nor a second encoder can deliver video through a total loss of connectivity.
Configure FFmpeg to attempt recovery from temporary output failures
FFmpeg’s official formats and muxers documentation shows the FIFO muxer being used with an RTMP output so processing can continue in real time while the output encounters a temporary network failure. Treat this as an illustrative pattern, not a universal command: replace the input, stream mapping, codecs, and ingest address with values for your setup, and test it with the FFmpeg version installed on the streaming machine.

Use the input and mapping appropriate to your file or live source. The example encodes with H.264 video and AAC audio; if you change codecs or protocol, confirm that your FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest configuration support them.
What the recovery options do—and do not do
-f fifouses FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer, separating processing from the output muxer so encoding can continue through some output failures.-fifo_format flvspecifies FLV as the format sent through the FIFO to the RTMP output.-attempt_recovery 1requests attempts to recover the output.-recovery_wait_time 1sets the wait between recovery attempts to one second.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1allows packets to be dropped if the queue overflows. This avoids building an unbounded backlog, but a sufficiently long failure can mean lost content.
The documented example does not guarantee that every RTMP or RTMPS error is recoverable, that no frames or audio will be lost, or that viewers will see continuous playback. Test the behavior with your own input, FFmpeg release, and YouTube ingest configuration.

Do not mistake HTTP reconnect options for RTMP output recovery
FFmpeg documents options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, and -reconnect_at_eof for its HTTP protocol handling. Their presence does not establish retry behavior for a YouTube RTMP output URL. For the output-recovery case, use and test the FIFO muxer pattern rather than assuming HTTP options will reconnect RTMP.
Match stream settings to a connection that can sustain them
Measure outbound upload at the actual streaming location and at a time that reflects expected network load. Download speed is not a substitute. YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth above the total stream bitrate. For example, a stream using 5 Mbps in total calls for at least 6 Mbps of sustainable outbound capacity under that recommendation. Include audio and any other stream traffic when calculating the total.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to Google’s servers. Encryption does not preserve a connection when the network is unavailable. Take the ingest address from Live Control Room and verify that your FFmpeg build supports the protocol you select. YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video support, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

These are YouTube encoder specifications, not measurements of Indian ISP performance or a promise that a particular connection can sustain a bitrate. If your measured upload cannot support the intended total bitrate with headroom, lower the video bitrate or resolution and test again.

Prepare and test before the scheduled stream
- Test at the streaming location. Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions, including the network load likely during the event. Choose settings your connection can sustain with the recommended headroom.
- Run a production-like test. Use audio and video with movement similar to the real stream. Start the encoder ahead of the scheduled event, check the YouTube preview and stream-health status, and read any specific error messages in Live Control Room.
- Test the recovery path. Simulate an output interruption you can safely reproduce and observe both the FFmpeg log and the YouTube stream. Confirm what viewers see and whether the encoder recovers; do not assume the command alone proves it.
- Verify local recording. If you keep an archive, confirm the file exists, is growing during the test, and can be played back. Inspect it after recovery for gaps or damage.
- Test backup ingestion if configured. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over. Primary and backup streams need matching settings for failover, including resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, and bitrate.
Plan for an outage that lasts longer than a retry can handle
When the primary internet route is unavailable, recovery needs another route to YouTube. A second fixed connection or mobile-data connection can help only if it is actually independent of the failed path and available at the streaming location. A dual-WAN or cellular failover router is a possible part of that setup, not a guarantee: check local carrier coverage, supported bands, plan limits, upload capacity, and automatic failover behavior, then test them on site. A router cannot create cellular coverage or remove a shared failure point.
A second encoder solves a different problem: it can provide redundant encoding or ingestion, but if both encoders depend on the same failed broadband connection, it does not provide an independent internet route. Match the streams’ required settings and run YouTube’s failover test before relying on it.

Power is a separate failure mode
If local power fails, the encoder and network equipment may stop even when a backup internet connection is available. A UPS is useful only if it is sized for the devices that must stay on and its runtime is tested in the actual setup. Do not treat a UPS as a guarantee of a long stream during an outage.
Troubleshoot an interruption in order
- Check the logs and YouTube status. Note when the interruption began, inspect FFmpeg’s log, and check Live Control Room’s stream health and error messages.
- Confirm the encoder is still alive. Check whether FFmpeg is running and whether its local input, audio, and video remain healthy. If FFmpeg exited, a supervisor may restart the process; that is separate from restoring internet service.
- Check outbound connectivity. If FFmpeg and the source appear healthy but transmission fails, test upload capacity and the route to the ingest service. YouTube directs operators with connection-test problems to their ISP.
- Check redundancy configuration. If using a backup encoder, verify its settings match the primary and repeat the planned failover test. If using a secondary internet path, check that it is independent and has working upload at the location.
- Inspect the archive after recovery. Check for missing sections or damaged output. A recovered live encoder cannot retroactively restore footage that was not transmitted or recorded.

Does FFmpeg’s FIFO recovery restore video viewers missed during a network outage?
No. Recovery can resume output, but it does not retroactively deliver missing footage. Check the stream and any local archive for gaps after the connection returns.
