Measure the Pi’s temperature and throttling while your actual FFmpeg stream is running; an idle reading or brief test cannot show whether it will stay stable around the clock. Raspberry Pi progressively throttles Arm cores between 80°C and 85°C, then throttles both the Arm cores and GPU at 85°C. If your stream reaches those conditions, improve airflow and check the encoding workload—not just the cooler.

Why a 24/7 FFmpeg stream can overheat a Raspberry Pi

Video processing can keep a Raspberry Pi under sustained compute load. That makes temperatures during the real stream more useful than temperatures at idle: a short test may not reveal how the board behaves after it has been working for an extended period. The exact result depends on the Pi model, codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, enclosure, airflow, and room temperature. Raspberry Pi advises considering additional cooling if throttling occurs during the device’s usual workload (Raspberry Pi hardware documentation; cooling guidance).

What the temperature thresholds mean

Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation says Arm cores are progressively throttled from 80°C to 85°C. At 85°C, both the Arm cores and GPU are throttled. This thermal control can reduce sustained performance, potentially affecting a demanding video workload. The threshold is not a target operating temperature or proof that every stream will fail at a particular reading.

Check temperature and throttling under the real workload

Start by identifying your Pi model, then run the complete FFmpeg command you intend to use: same input, output resolution, frame rate, filters, encoder, and streaming destination. Let it run long enough to observe its sustained behavior. Record temperature and check for throttling during the run rather than relying on a single reading.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Read the temperature

  • In a terminal, run vcgencmd measure_temp. Raspberry Pi documents this command for reading the device temperature.
  • Alternatively, read /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp. The reported value is in thousandths of a degree Celsius; divide it by 1000 to get °C. For example, a reading of 72000 means 72°C.

Temperature alone does not tell the whole story. Compare readings and throttling behavior with the stream running, and note whether performance changes as the board warms. Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation describes temperature monitoring commands and configuration context.

Improve cooling without guessing

If the actual workload throttles, begin with unobstructed airflow and a correctly fitted heatsink. Raspberry Pi says airflow over a heatsink improves cooling efficiency, and its hardware guidance notes that a heatsink or small fan can reduce thermal throttling, particularly inside a case. These are cooling measures, not guaranteed temperature drops: no universal reduction is established for every board and FFmpeg setup.

Choose a cooling approach that fits the board and case

  • Heatsink: Check that it is compatible with your exact Pi and properly coupled to the component it is intended to cool. A heatsink in a sealed or poorly ventilated enclosure may not have enough airflow to help as much as expected.
  • Ventilation or a different case: Make sure vents are not blocked and that the case allows air to reach the board. Check that any heatsink or fan physically fits.
  • Fan: A compatible fan can provide airflow in a closed case. Consider fan noise and the maintenance needs of a moving part, and verify that the fan and case are designed for your board.
  • Raspberry Pi 5-specific cooling: The official Active Cooler and temperature-controlled fan options are Pi 5 considerations. Confirm model and case compatibility before buying; do not assume a Pi 5 accessory fits another generation.

After changing the cooling setup, run the same full stream again and check whether throttling still occurs. The practical test is the board’s behavior under your workload, not a cooler’s advertised or assumed temperature drop.

Reduce encoding demand when cooling is not enough

Cooling cannot make an unnecessarily demanding encoding pipeline efficient. Review the input and output codecs, resolution, frame rate, scaling and other filters, and software encoder settings. Changing these can affect processing demand as well as output quality and latency, so validate the finished stream rather than assuming a lower load is a free improvement.

Check which encoder your Pi generation supports

Encoding capability differs by generation and software path. Raspberry Pi’s documented comparison identifies the Pi 4 h264_v4l2m2m hardware encoder and software libx264 configurations for Pi 5 (camera software documentation; H.264 encoding performance paper). A hardware encoding path is an option only where the specific Pi generation and software stack support it; do not assume a Pi 5 has the same H.264 hardware path as a Pi 4.

Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation states that “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders” and that “libav uses hardware H.264 video encoding when present.” The available encoder and its parameters can affect CPU use, quality, and latency, so check the documentation for your model and software stack before changing the FFmpeg pipeline.

As one model-specific reference point, Raspberry Pi’s processor documentation gives an approximate 30–40% CPU estimate for Pi 5 H.264 1080p30 encoding from the ISP. That figure describes that encoding context; it is not a temperature result or a prediction for an arbitrary FFmpeg command (Raspberry Pi processor documentation).

Troubleshoot overheating and stream instability

  • Temperature rises into the throttling range: Check airflow, heatsink contact, case ventilation, and fan operation, then repeat the full-workload test. If throttling persists, review codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, and encoder settings.
  • The Pi is cool at idle but throttles during streaming: Treat the stream as the relevant test. Video processing can sustain a heavier load than idle use; measure during the actual command.
  • A heatsink made little apparent difference: Verify its fit and contact, check whether the case restricts airflow, and consider compatible active cooling if the workload still throttles. A heatsink alone is not a remedy for excessive software encoding load.
  • A fan does not appear to help: Check compatibility, placement, airflow direction, and whether it is operating as intended. Then recheck temperature and throttling under the same stream conditions.
  • Changing encoder settings changes output or latency: Recheck the output quality and timing as well as CPU behavior. Encoding options involve trade-offs; select settings that meet the stream’s requirements and run stably on the particular Pi.

Raspberry Pi’s cooling guidance recommends considering additional cooling when throttling occurs during the normal workload. Its H.264 performance paper provides model-specific encoding context; neither establishes a universal temperature outcome for 24/7 FFmpeg streaming.
