To keep an OBS loop live when you close a Windows laptop’s lid, set its plugged-in lid action so Windows stays awake, configure and test the looping video source in OBS, then confirm the feed in YouTube Live Control Room before leaving the laptop unattended. Run a closed-lid test on your own laptop: available power settings and safe operating conditions vary by hardware.
1. Set Windows to stay awake when the lid closes
- Plug in the laptop and open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
- For When I close the lid, set the Plugged in action to an option that keeps the computer awake, rather than Sleep or Hibernate. Save the change if Windows presents a save button.
- Keep the plugged-in setting distinct from the battery setting. You can choose a different action on battery, but the stream should be tested while connected to power.
Turning off the display is not the same as putting Windows to sleep. Microsoft notes that laptop lid behavior and available options can depend on the computer’s hardware and manufacturer: Windows power options.
2. Configure and verify the OBS loop
Add the video you want to stream as a source in OBS and enable that source’s loop behavior in the version you have installed. OBS’s available interface labels may vary by version; its media-source documentation does not establish a click-by-click sequence here, so use the current OBS interface rather than relying on guessed menu names.
- Start playback and let the entire video reach its end.
- Confirm that playback restarts from the beginning and continues without a gap or an unintended black screen.
- Check that the intended scene is active and that the audio is present at a sensible level.
If you use display capture
OBS recommends leaving the application on the default high-power GPU. If display capture is blank, check the GPU assignment and capture method. OBS 27 and later supports a capture method for cases where OBS and the monitor are on different GPUs; the cited guidance specifies Windows 10 version 1903 or later for the described setup. 3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select or create the stream you intend to run.
- Copy the stream key and enter it in OBS’s streaming settings. A stream key gives an encoder access to the stream feed, so keep it private; reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Where available, choose YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion option for an encrypted connection. YouTube supports custom stream keys and encoder-triggered auto-start and auto-stop settings; confirm the current options in the Live Control Room.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for YouTube’s preview to show the intended video and audio before making the stream public or leaving it running.

4. Choose settings that fit the real connection
Use the resolution and frame rate you need, then choose an encoder bitrate that fits the upload capacity available where the laptop will stream. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists 5–14 Mbps as its recommended range for H.264 at 1080p30; the suitable point within that range depends on the configuration and available bandwidth. Run an upload speed test at the actual location, leave capacity for connection variation, and test the stream rather than assuming a speed-test result guarantees stable delivery.

YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported, a pre-stream test, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder settings page has the current codec and resolution guidance.
5. Test the closed-lid setup before relying on it
- With the laptop plugged in and OBS sending the loop, check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview for the correct picture and audio.
- Open the stream’s watch page on another device, such as a phone, and verify that it plays as expected. YouTube recommends checking the event on the channel/watch page and a mobile device.
- Only after the stream is working, close the laptop lid for a short test. From the other device, confirm that YouTube continues receiving the loop.
- Keep an eye on stream health and audio/video quality during the test. Test any failover arrangement in advance if your setup has one.
A successful test confirms the behavior of that particular laptop and setup; it does not establish that every laptop can safely run closed. The cited Windows guidance does not certify closed-lid thermal conditions for a specific make or model. Check your manufacturer’s guidance and do not leave a device running in a configuration that blocks ventilation or causes it to overheat. 6. Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before looping a video for an extended period, make sure you have the rights needed for its video, music, and other included material. A successful encoder connection does not grant those rights or guarantee that YouTube will allow the content to remain live. Review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and YouTube channel monetization policies, including reused-content rules if monetization matters to you.
7. Troubleshoot common failures
