OBS’s local status only says it is attempting to send video; it does not confirm YouTube received the feed or that a scheduled event was taken live. Look for a preview, verify the event’s stream URL and key, and then check OBS output and your network.
1. Check the right YouTube event

In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and select the current or scheduled stream you intend to use. Make sure you are not looking at another event or an old event with different settings. YouTube’s encoder-stream setup guidance describes selecting the stream in Live Control Room.

If it is a scheduled stream, start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear. Then click Go live in the Live Control Room. An encoder can be sending a feed while the scheduled event has not yet been taken live.
2. Check for YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages
In the selected event’s Live Control Room, look for the video preview and any stream-health status or messages. If there is no preview, YouTube is not showing you a received feed for that event; focus on the encoder destination, key, connection, and output. If there is a preview, read the health messages for problems with the incoming stream. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during a broadcast in its live-streaming help.

3. Match OBS’s destination and stream key to the event

Open the intended event in Live Control Room and locate its encoder settings. Compare the server or stream URL and stream key there with the values in OBS under Settings → Stream. YouTube explains that the key identifies where the encoder sends its feed and enables YouTube to accept it in its encoder setup instructions.

If the key is stale, invalid, or was reset, copy the current event’s values into OBS and apply the change. Confirm that the selected event is still the one you mean to stream to.

Treat the stream key as a credential: do not share it or show it in a public screenshot or recording.

4. Check OBS’s actual output
Confirm OBS is sending the intended scene and that its video and audio sources are active. Check OBS for encoder errors or unusually high CPU load. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the stream in the encoder itself: if the picture or sound is already missing or unhealthy there, fix the sources or encoder load before treating it as a YouTube problem.
5. Diagnose dropped frames and disconnections
If OBS reports dropped frames or keeps disconnecting, investigate the connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network issue in its dropped-frames troubleshooting guide.

Test sustained outbound upload and leave room for fluctuations rather than setting the stream bitrate right at the connection’s limit.

YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom in its network guidance. Its guidance also says to account for primary and backup streams where applicable.

Check whether other people or devices are using the connection, and whether a VPN or security software may be interfering. If possible, test a wired connection or another available ingest server.

If the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, lower OBS’s video bitrate and test again. This can make the stream less detailed, but may improve stability. If testing points to a persistent connection problem, YouTube advises checking the outbound connection and contacting your ISP.

6. Compare bitrate with YouTube’s guidance
Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single correct figure for every OBS stream. YouTube’s encoder settings table gives recommendations by configuration. For one reference point, YouTube lists H.264 at 1080p/30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; the page does not state a publication year for that figure. Treat it as guidance, not a guarantee that a given connection or OBS setup will work.
Check the row that matches your encoder settings, then make sure your sustained upload capacity can support the resulting total bitrate with the recommended headroom. If stream health reports instability, reduce bitrate or resolution as appropriate and test again.

For a scheduled stream, make sure you have selected Go live once the preview is ready.

Open the event’s watch page or channel view and confirm that viewers can access the intended stream. YouTube’s streaming preparation guidance also recommends checking the local archive and confirming that its file size is growing.
