What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Recovery depends on which connection failed: your encoder sending video to Owncast, or Owncast’s relay sending it to YouTube. Check the failed link, retry controls, server health, and YouTube’s broadcast settings in that order. None of the cited documentation guarantees an uninterrupted stream, so rehearse the full recovery path before relying on it.
Understand the two connections
In this setup, your broadcasting software sends an RTMP feed to Owncast, and a separate relay or encoder sends the feed onward to YouTube. A failure on either leg can interrupt what viewers see, but the right fix depends on where it occurred.
- Encoder to Owncast: Your broadcasting software may lose its internet connection, fail to reach Owncast, or stop running.
- Owncast to YouTube: The outgoing relay may lose its connection, YouTube may stop accepting the feed, or a server-side process may fail.
- YouTube broadcast lifecycle: YouTube may keep the broadcast open or end it, depending on its settings and behavior. Do not assume a reconnect will restore the same broadcast.
Configure a recoverable Owncast feed
Confirm the RTMP destination
Owncast accepts incoming RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default, though an administrator can configure a different port. The stream key is accepted on the /live/ path. Use the RTMP address and key configured for your Owncast server, and keep the key private: do not expose it in screenshots, public logs, or shared troubleshooting posts. Owncast’s broadcasting documentation describes its ingest setup.
Use compatible video settings
Owncast recommends H.264 video, AAC audio, and a keyframe interval of two seconds for broad compatibility. These are compatibility recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection will recover after an interruption.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Example output | Owncast example bitrate | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1280×720 at 30 fps | 3000k | Example guidance, not a universal requirement; check that your connection and server can sustain it. |
| 1920×1080 at 30 fps | 4500k | Example guidance, not a universal requirement; check that your connection and server can sustain it. |
These example bitrates come from Owncast’s current broadcasting documentation, accessed in 2026. Your sustainable upload capacity and server resources determine whether they are appropriate. A bitrate that exceeds either can cause instability; lowering incoming or outgoing quality may help if capacity is the constraint. Owncast’s broadcasting guide also directs operators to stream health and disconnection troubleshooting information.
Check OBS reconnect behavior
OBS’s English interface catalog lists three reconnect controls: Automatically Reconnect, Retry Delay, and Maximum Retries. Inspect the output settings in your installed OBS version and confirm that retry behavior suits your setup. The catalog does not establish current defaults, exact retry limits, or successful recovery in every failure case. Treat reconnect as an attempt, not a promise that the stream or YouTube broadcast will remain live. OBS Project documentation

Review YouTube’s broadcast settings
YouTube supports reusable stream settings and custom stream keys. Reusing settings can carry over the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and key, so review them before going live. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the current auto-start and auto-stop settings: YouTube explains that these allow the encoder to start or stop streaming. Verify the behavior in your own account before depending on it. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
Stopping the encoder and ending a broadcast are not necessarily the same action. An OBS community guide says that enabling YouTube auto-stop removes the option to reconnect later and continue that broadcast without scheduling another one. Because this is community guidance and may not reflect current controls, verify the current setting and behavior in YouTube Studio rather than treating it as a universal rule. OBS forum guide

Troubleshoot a disconnect in order
- Identify the failed leg. Check the broadcasting software’s log to see whether it lost the Owncast connection. Check Owncast’s stream health or admin information for ingest and server-side problems. Determine separately whether the outgoing relay lost YouTube or YouTube ended the broadcast.
- Inspect retry controls. In OBS output settings, check Automatically Reconnect, Retry Delay, and Maximum Retries. Confirm the displayed values in your installed version; do not rely on assumed defaults.
- Check network and server capacity. Verify that the connection is stable and can sustain the sent bitrate. Check Owncast’s server and FFmpeg health. If the connection or server is overloaded, lower the incoming quality and/or output variants to a level the equipment and network can handle.
- Verify YouTube’s destination and lifecycle settings. Confirm the correct stream URL and key, then review auto-start and auto-stop in Live Control Room. If you reused settings, verify the metadata, settings, and key carried over are appropriate for this broadcast.
- Test the complete recovery path. On an unlisted or otherwise controlled broadcast, simulate a short interruption. Observe whether the encoder reconnects, whether YouTube keeps the same broadcast open, what viewers see, and how to end the broadcast manually afterward. No universal outage duration after which YouTube ends a stream is established by the cited sources.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not camera-based live production. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.

For a self-hosted Owncast workflow, the relevant costs and trade-offs depend on the server, network, and relay you already operate; the cited sources do not establish a standard cost or show that buying particular hardware fixes this disconnect scenario. YouTube supports hardware encoders as a class of encoder, but that alone does not demonstrate they solve a failure between Owncast and YouTube. Choose equipment only for a diagnosed constraint, such as inadequate network capacity or power—not as a guaranteed reconnection fix. YouTube Help
