Wired play is the practical option, but it is not a guaranteed idle-timeout fix
Xbox says the Series X controller’s USB-C port supports playing and charging over a cable. That makes a compatible USB-C data cable a reasonable choice if your goal is to keep playing without relying on a wireless connection. It does not confirm that wired mode disables inactivity shutdown on every console, PC, firmware version, or app setup. Xbox Wire’s Series X controller description is specifically about that controller’s wired capability.
- Check the controller’s port and confirm it is USB-C; do not assume every Xbox controller generation uses the same connector.
- Connect a compatible USB-C data cable directly to the controller and console or PC.
- Use your own setup for the session and check whether the controller stays connected while idle. Results may depend on the device, firmware, and app.
Can you turn off the Xbox controller’s inactivity shutdown?
The official Xbox Support results available for this topic did not verify a controller setting that disables inactivity shutdown. That is not proof that no such setting exists in every version or configuration, but there is not enough here to give a reliable menu path. Avoid changing unrelated console power settings on the assumption that they control controller sleep.
Microsoft Community threads include user and volunteer guidance describing wireless controllers turning off after roughly 15 minutes without input, as well as a suggestion to connect by USB. Those are community reports, not an official specification. The discussions do not establish one timeout interval for all Xbox controllers, consoles, PC connections, firmware, or apps. One community discussion and another thread about wireless shutdown illustrate the reports, but should not be treated as universal rules.

Controller power and a game’s AFK behavior are separate
Keeping the controller connected does not necessarily keep a game progressing while you are away. Whether a game pauses, disconnects, or marks a player inactive is determined by that game and its online systems; the sources available here do not verify the AFK mechanics of any particular title. Check the game’s own guidance if uninterrupted progression or an online session is the goal.

What not to rely on
- A rechargeable battery pack: the cited information does not show that a battery accessory disables inactivity shutdown.
- A fixed control position: anecdotal reports are not a reliable or officially recommended way to keep a controller active.
