Yes. Keep at least one water block directly beside each living coral block or plant. Water elsewhere nearby is not enough. A neighboring waterlogged block can work in supported placements, but ordinary adjacent water is the most reliable option across editions and designs.
How to keep living coral alive

Place the coral where a water block occupies one of the six positions directly beside it: above, below, or to any of its four sides.

Check the space next to the coral itself. Water at a distance, elsewhere in the room, or separated from the coral by another block does not meet the adjacency condition.

For a decorative build using a slab, stair, or other waterloggable block, fill that neighboring block with water. Because behavior can depend on the edition, version, and exact arrangement, test the design in your world; direct water beside the coral is the safer choice.

The survival rule applies to coral plants as well as full coral blocks. Dry placement causes living coral to become its dead variant after a short delay. The exact timing is not established consistently enough to treat any particular duration as universal.
Can dead coral be revived?
No. Adding water to dead coral does not turn it back into living coral. If the piece has turned gray, obtain living coral again rather than trying to revive it.

Where to get living coral again
Coral can be obtained from coral reefs. An older Bedrock guide also describes generating coral with bone meal on suitable underwater blocks in warm oceans; check the steps for your current game version before relying on that method.

The clearest general recommendation is direct water adjacency. Secondary references describe waterlogged neighboring blocks as satisfying the condition in supported placements, but behavior for every waterlogged slab, stair, fan, or decorative arrangement is not established across all Java and Bedrock versions. If a build matters, test the exact placement in the edition and version you play.

Mojang’s official Java snapshot notes clarify coral terminology and discuss waterlogged blocks, but that snapshot is from 2018 and does not document the current coral survival mechanic. The adjacency guidance comes from secondary Minecraft references: Minecraft Wiki: Coral and Minecraft Wiki: Coral block. Changing randomTickSpeed is not a dependable fix; the cited coral reference says coral death is not controlled by that setting.
