First check whether FFmpeg is running, suspended, or exited; verify that the input path exists and is readable; then inspect FFmpeg’s output or log. Before launching, choose what should happen if the file is absent: wait for it for a bounded time, switch to a valid fallback, or stop with a clear error.
First identify what “frozen” means
A YouTube player that appears stuck does not tell you whether FFmpeg exited, is suspended, is waiting for input, or is blocked while sending output. Check the process on the machine running FFmpeg and review its stderr or configured log. On Linux, for example, ps can show whether the process exists and its state; a process in a stopped state is different from one that has exited. Exact process-inspection steps vary by operating system and how FFmpeg was launched.
- Process exited: inspect the startup error and confirm the input path, permissions, and file availability.
- Process is suspended: check whether an unattended process is trying to read console input; use
-nostdinas described below. - Process is still running: inspect logs to determine whether it is waiting for input, blocked on a pipe, or stalled at network output. Do not assume every apparent freeze has the same cause.
FFmpeg accepts a file or other input through -i; a YouTube destination cannot provide media when that local input does not exist. The FFmpeg command-line documentation describes input handling, but does not define a native “wait until this file appears” policy.
Choose an explicit missing-file policy
Check the exact configured path and readability before starting FFmpeg. Then make the behavior deliberate rather than letting a restart loop repeatedly fail on the same absent file.

Whichever policy you choose, log the path checked, the retry or fallback decision, and the final error. This helps distinguish a missing file from later encoder or network problems.
Stop background FFmpeg from waiting on console input
There is a separate failure mode: a background FFmpeg process may be suspended when it checks the terminal for interactive commands. The FFmpeg FAQ explains: “When it checks the console input, that can cause the process running ffmpeg in the background to suspend.” For an unattended invocation, add -nostdin to the command, commonly before the input options:

ffmpeg -nostdin -i /path/to/source.mp4 [your existing encoding and output options]
The bracketed phrase is a reminder to retain your own encoding and output options, not literal FFmpeg syntax. Alternatively, detach standard input: redirect it from /dev/null on Linux or macOS, or NUL on Windows. The documented behavior and background-task context are in the FFmpeg FAQ, section 3.19. This prevents the terminal-input suspension described there; it does not create a missing file, unblock an unrelated pipe, or repair a network failure.

Use reconnect and FIFO options only for matching failures
FFmpeg’s protocol reconnect options—including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, and retry or delay limits—apply to supported network inputs. They do not make a nonexistent local path appear. See the FFmpeg protocols documentation for the options and their scope.
The FIFO muxer’s attempt_recovery can retry an output after a failure. drop_pkts_on_overflow can allow processing to continue without waiting for a full output queue, but doing so can drop packets and leave missing portions of the stream. These are output recovery tradeoffs, not missing-input remedies; consult the FFmpeg formats documentation.

Check YouTube setup after FFmpeg has media to send
Only after FFmpeg can read and produce input packets does the YouTube destination become the relevant part of the diagnosis. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the stream and configure them in your encoder. Use the actual endpoint shown for that stream; do not copy a key into public logs, screenshots, or support posts. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find these values.
YouTube’s current help pages describe RTMP/RTMPS, encoder settings, testing, and stream-health monitoring. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; if using it, follow YouTube’s instructions to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room rather than relying on a hard-coded endpoint. Check YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and encoder settings guidance for current interface details and quality recommendations. Those recommendations concern stream configuration, not missing-file recovery.

Test the complete path and troubleshoot by symptom
- Confirm the source path is the one the running job actually uses, and that the file exists and is readable by the account running FFmpeg.
- Test your chosen absence policy: bounded wait, known fallback, or clear failure. Verify timeout and alert behavior instead of assuming a restart will solve the issue.
- Run the unattended command with
-nostdinor detached stdin if it does not need interactive terminal commands. - Verify FFmpeg can read the source and produce output packets before diagnosing the YouTube URL or key.
- Start a test stream, then monitor FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health. Do not publish your stream key.
