FFmpeg cannot send video while your connection to YouTube is down. To resume after connectivity returns, configure recovery for the network output—FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer is one documented option—or use a supervisor to restart FFmpeg if it exits. Then confirm YouTube is receiving video in Live Control Room; a recovered process does not guarantee a gap-free broadcast.
What “reconnect” means for a YouTube stream
FFmpeg’s HTTP -reconnect options concern HTTP inputs. They do not, by themselves, make an RTMP or RTMPS output reconnect after a network failure. The protocol documentation lists options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_max_retries, and retry-delay limits for HTTP behavior. Do not add those flags to a YouTube output command expecting them to restore the outgoing connection. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
The practical goal is to restore the output after the network returns. No encoder can deliver live packets to YouTube while there is no route to its ingest server. Viewers may see a gap, and a disconnect can affect the broadcast state; the official documentation cited here does not guarantee seamless continuity for an FFmpeg RTMP output.
Choose an output recovery method
FFmpeg FIFO pseudo-muxer
FFmpeg’s Formats Documentation describes the FIFO pseudo-muxer as a way to handle network output recovery. Its controls include attempt_recovery, max_recovery_attempts, and recovery_wait_time. Exact options and behavior depend on the FFmpeg version and build installed on your system. Check that build’s ffmpeg-formats manual before adapting an example; this is not a promise that the stream will remain uninterrupted. Video or audio packets can be lost during an outage, and YouTube may show a gap.

External process supervisor
A supervisor can restart FFmpeg if the process exits after an error. This approach depends on the supervisor’s configuration and on restarting FFmpeg with the same intended input, output URL, stream key, and encoding settings. A supervisor that only restarts a process does not repair an unavailable ISP connection, nor does it prove that YouTube has resumed receiving video.
These methods address different failure cases: FIFO recovery handles output recovery within FFmpeg, while a supervisor acts when the process fails. If you use both, avoid creating a rapid restart loop; inspect logs and set an appropriate delay or retry policy for your supervisor.

Set up and verify the connection
- Check your installed FFmpeg version and documentation. Record the version and confirm the FIFO options supported by that build. Flags copied from another release may not behave the same way.
- Use YouTube’s ingest details. Configure the ingestion URL YouTube provides and the matching stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or support posts.
- Validate RTMPS details if you use RTMPS. The URL must use the RTMPS protocol and a valid ingestion endpoint and path, with port 443 and correct TLS hostname/SNI configuration. Consult Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary user content, including low-latency use.
- Configure recovery on the output path. Use FIFO recovery controls supported by your installed build, or configure a supervisor to restart FFmpeg after a failure. Preserve the intended command and credentials securely.
- Watch both sides. Check FFmpeg’s error log, then check YouTube Live’s stream status and health to confirm that incoming video has resumed. An open FFmpeg process alone is not confirmation.
- Rehearse before relying on it. Test a controlled network interruption and verify what viewers and YouTube Live show when connectivity returns. Recovery behavior varies by setup; no hands-on test results or guaranteed recovery time are established here.
Check YouTube’s ingest status and backup address
YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes primary and backup ingest addresses and reports stream status and health. Health can report insufficient incoming video as videoIngestionStarved. Use the status and health information to determine whether video is arriving after a reconnect rather than assuming the output is healthy from FFmpeg’s process state.
YouTube documents the backup ingest address as an optional destination for simultaneous sending. The cited API documentation does not describe it as automatic failover for a single FFmpeg connection. Sending to a second address is therefore not a substitute for configuring output recovery or a process restart.

Reduce outage risk without expecting zero interruption
A cellular failover router may preserve internet reachability if the primary ISP path fails and cellular service is available. This is a network-topology option, not a documented FFmpeg or YouTube recovery feature. Coverage, data capacity, and carrier terms affect whether it is useful, and a route change can still break the active connection. Keep output recovery configured even if you have a backup uplink; neither option guarantees a gap-free session.
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS for normal through ultra-low latency. RTMPS encrypts the contribution path. HLS and DASH are segment-based alternatives that support additional codecs and may suit higher-resolution contributions, but have greater latency; changing protocol is not a general reconnect fix. Troubleshoot a stream that does not resume
- FFmpeg keeps running but YouTube receives no video: Check the output error log and YouTube Live stream status and health. A running process is not proof of an active ingest.
- HTTP reconnect flags had no effect: Those options describe HTTP protocol behavior, not recovery of an RTMP or RTMPS output. Configure output recovery, such as the FIFO pseudo-muxer, or use a supervisor for process failures.
- RTMPS cannot connect: Verify the RTMPS scheme, YouTube-provided endpoint and path, port 443, and TLS hostname/SNI configuration.
- The stream is marked starved: YouTube’s health information may report
videoIngestionStarvedwhen incoming video is insufficient. Check whether FFmpeg has resumed sending and whether the network path is available. - Recovery works on one machine but not another: Compare FFmpeg versions and their local formats documentation; FIFO options and behavior can be version-dependent.
- The ISP fails over to cellular but the stream still drops: A route change can interrupt the active connection. Keep FFmpeg output recovery or process supervision in place; a backup link is not a zero-interruption guarantee.
