At a Nether base, enclose the area and block exposed entrances. Torches are not a dependable deterrent; ghasts can spawn at any light level. Fire-resistant, explosion-resistant construction protects a build, but does not stop ghasts from spawning outside it.
Where ghasts spawn
Ghasts naturally spawn in basalt deltas, Nether wastes, and soul sand valleys, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s ghast entry. If avoiding encounters matters more than exploring a particular biome, choose routes and build locations outside those areas.
Microsoft’s Bedrock stable spawn-rule reference lists the Nether and the spawn_ghast biome tag, with a difficulty range from Easy through Hard. That is Bedrock-specific documentation, not a complete spawn-rule specification for Java Edition.
How to reduce ghast exposure around a base
Enclose the space and close openings
Build a roof and walls around the area you want protected, and block exposed entrances or approaches. A safe-home guide describes restricting entrances and available open space as ways to keep ghasts from entering or spawning in a protected cavern. This can make an area safer, but an enclosure does not prove that ghasts cannot spawn outside it or reach you through a gap.

Do not depend on lighting
Ghasts can spawn at any light level, so adding torches alone is not a reliable way to keep them away. An old Mojang bug report describes ghasts being incorrectly limited to low light in Bedrock versions 1.16.0 through 1.16.20; it lists Bedrock 1.16.100 as the fix. That historical bug is not evidence that current ghasts are light-sensitive.
Build to withstand fireballs
Protection from a fireball is different from spawn prevention. The safe-home tutorial recommends cobblestone as nonflammable, impervious to ghast fire, and reasonably explosion resistant. The defense tutorial suggests glass for ghast-resistant fort construction and iron bars or nether brick fences for windows. Treat these as building suggestions, not as a complete block-resistance guide or a guarantee that every design is immune to damage.

- Use an enclosed design to limit access to the protected area.
- Choose sturdy, nonflammable materials where practical, especially for exposed walls and roofs.
- Pay attention to windows and other openings; a material choice cannot protect an opening that leaves you exposed.
Is the Nether roof a way to avoid ghasts?
The Nether advancement guide says ghasts do not naturally spawn on bedrock on the Nether roof by default. This is an edition- and version-sensitive option: that source does not establish roof access or behavior for every edition and version. Check the rules for the version you play before relying on it.
