Keep loose ends to a minimum, check that the style is comfortable under any headgear, and test it at training before match day. Match rules vary, so confirm what your competition allows.
Choose a style that contains the length
No source establishes one hairstyle as best for every player. The practical goal is to keep hair out of your face and reduce the amount left swinging or exposed. Try a style in training and judge it by hold, comfort, your hair’s length and texture, and compatibility with headgear.

These are practical options to test, not official World Rugby hairstyle prescriptions. Rugby-focused advice recommends tying hair back and minimizing loose lengths, but does not rank these styles in a controlled comparison (Men’s Hair Blog, 2018).
Use simple ties and check match rules
Choose a soft tie without metal. World Rugby’s equipment guidance warns that “Rigid materials that do not comply with a specific performance specification may increase the risk to the wearer or other players (both teammates and/or opponents)” (What can be worn during matches). Its Regulation 12 lists permitted equipment categories and says to read the specifications with the current Law 4; it does not prescribe a hairstyle or generally approve every hair tie (Regulation 12).

Rules can also depend on the union and competition. USA Rugby’s 2024–2025 Protective Equipment and Clothing Guidelines state: “Only fabric ‘hairbands’ are allowed for control of hair during a rugby match.” They also say: “‘Hair ties’ like rubber bands are permitted, as long as there is no metal on them.” This guidance is specific to that season and jurisdiction; check the current requirements with your union, competition or match official rather than treating it as a universal ruling.

Balance secure hold with comfort
A tight style may stay put but pull on the scalp. In a Sky Sports interview, Loughborough Lightning player Sadia Kabeya described traction with braids and said rugby adds to it. That is her personal experience, not a clinical finding or a measure of how common the problem is (Sky Sports, October 2023).
- Do not keep playing in a style that hurts or pulls persistently; loosen or change it.
- Try different arrangements in training and vary styles if repeated tension is uncomfortable.
- Check your hair and scalp after training as well as during it; a style that feels secure at first may become uncomfortable during play.
The available sources do not provide a controlled comparison of hairstyles, a quantified injury or hair-damage risk, or proof that braiding prevents breakage. Choose based on your own comfort and the rules of your match.
