Then test the real post-reboot setup before relying on it for a YouTube broadcast.
Why media sources break after a restart
An OBS scene stores source configuration, but a Media Source that points to a local file still depends on that file being present and readable. A restart can expose three separate problems: OBS loaded a different Scene Collection or Profile, a media file or mount is unavailable, or OBS is running under a different user or environment than the one used to configure it.
OBS’s Media Sources guide describes local audio and video files and playback options. Its Sources Guide explains how scenes and sources are organized. Configuration and media files are distinct: exporting OBS settings does not bundle the files referenced by a scene.
Back up the scene and streaming settings separately
OBS keeps scenes and sources in a Scene Collection. A Profile holds stream, video, and output settings. Backing up only the Profile will not preserve your scene layout and Media Sources.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Export the Profile: Open Profile in OBS and choose Export. Save the JSON backup somewhere that will survive a server rebuild or cleanup. The OBS Profiles guide explains what Profiles contain and how they are exported.
- Export the Scene Collection separately: Use the Scene Collection menu and its export option to save the collection currently used for the broadcast. Keep this file alongside, but distinct from, the Profile export.
- Keep copies outside temporary storage: Store the exports somewhere other than an ephemeral runtime directory. Also back up the actual media assets; configuration exports do not make the files portable.
Menu labels can vary with OBS version. Confirm that you exported the active Profile and Scene Collection, not an unused one.
Make every media file reachable after reboot
Check the exact file path
- In OBS, select the scene and open the Media Source’s Properties.
- Note the configured local file path. After restarting, confirm that the file exists at that exact path; a copy elsewhere is not enough unless you update the source path.
- Check that the Linux account running OBS can read the file and its parent directories. A file visible to your login may not be accessible to a service or container running as another user.
Check mounted storage before OBS starts
If media lives on a separate disk or network share, verify that the mount is available to the OBS process after reboot. If OBS starts before the mount is ready, the scene may load while its source cannot access the file. The required mount and startup ordering depend on your Linux distribution and deployment; there is no single OBS service recipe that applies to every package and session setup.

OBS’s portable-mode documentation notes that scene media files are not carried along with portable configuration, and that portable mode is not supported on Linux. Keep paths stable and assets accessible rather than relying on portable mode to solve persistence.
Verify OBS is loading the intended setup
After reboot, compare the active Scene Collection and Profile with the ones you exported. If OBS opens to an empty scene or different stream settings, first check which configuration the running process is using. A manually launched desktop instance, a service, or a container may run as a different Linux user and read a different configuration context.

The OBS Linux installation guide points to installation options, but package type, display/session requirements, runtime user, and startup behavior vary. Before changing auto-start configuration, identify the installed package and how the production OBS process is launched. Do not assume a generic systemd unit will work for a machine with different graphics, session, permissions, or mount requirements.
Understand what Media Source playback settings do
- Loop: repeats the file when playback reaches its end. It does not save a scene or restore a missing file.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: restarts playback when the source becomes visible in the current scene. It is not a boot or recovery setting.
- Close file when inactive: unloads the file while the source is hidden; it may take time to reload when shown again. It does not change the path.
These controls and their behavior are documented in OBS’s Media Sources guide. Browser Source refresh options are separate and apply to web content, not to local Media Source file persistence; see the Browser Source guide.

Run a post-reboot test before YouTube Live
- Restart the server and allow required disks, shares, and services to become available.
- Launch OBS through the same account and process arrangement intended for the broadcast.
- Confirm the expected Scene Collection and Profile are active.
- Open or preview each Media Source. Check that playback begins, loops if required, and that audio and video are present.
- Make a short test recording or stream and review it before using the setup for a real broadcast.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings before streaming. A reboot test is especially useful because it exercises configuration loading, file paths, permissions, mounts, and startup order together.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Expected scenes or sources are missing | A different Scene Collection or OBS configuration context loaded. | Select the intended Scene Collection; verify the runtime user and process are using the expected OBS configuration. |
| The source is present but blank | The file path changed, the file is missing, permissions block access, or a mount is unavailable. | Compare the source path with the actual file location; check read permissions and mount readiness for the OBS process. |
| The file plays manually but not after reboot | OBS may start as another user or before storage is mounted. | Check the account and environment used at startup, then ensure required storage is available before OBS launches. |
| Playback starts over or pauses when a scene changes | Media Source playback options or visibility behavior may be affecting playback. | Review Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, and Close file when inactive in the source properties. |
| Scenes load but YouTube output settings differ | The intended Profile may not be active. | Choose the correct Profile and confirm its stream, video, and output settings before broadcasting. |
YouTube broadcast continuity is a separate issue
Restoring OBS scenes and local media does not establish whether YouTube will resume the same broadcast after a full server outage. The available OBS guidance supports testing before a stream, but does not establish a universal event-continuity rule or reconnect window for this situation. Check the live status and event in YouTube Studio after a restart rather than assuming the prior broadcast continued.
