That only starts the application: it does not establish that a particular playlist resumes at the right video or position. Test the full restart path on your own OBS version and PC before relying on it.
What will and will not restart automatically
There are two separate things to verify after a Windows update, reboot, or power failure: whether OBS launches, and whether the intended scene and playlist actually play and reconnect to YouTube. OBS community discussions describe ways to launch the app at sign-in, but do not confirm that a specific playlist’s playback state or position survives an operating-system restart.
A 2019 discussion about OBS Studio 23.2.1 on Windows 10 Pro described a media source playing on startup and suggested a blank first scene as a workaround. That is an anecdotal report about an older setup, not a reliable rule for current OBS releases or playlist sources. Treat playback behavior as something to test, not assume.
Prepare OBS before changing Windows startup
- Open OBS and save the scene collection you intend to use. Confirm that the correct scene is selected and that the playlist source is present and configured as intended.
- Note what normal playback looks like: which video should appear first, whether the source is visible in the active scene, and whether the playlist advances as expected.
- If you stream to YouTube, make sure you can check the stream status after the restart. Reopening OBS alone does not prove that the stream has reconnected.
Choose how Windows should launch OBS
Option 1: Add an OBS shortcut to the Startup folder
This is the simpler route when you want OBS to open whenever your Windows account signs in. OBS community guidance describes placing an OBS shortcut in the Windows Startup folder. This starts OBS at sign-in; it does not provide the same control over triggers and timing as a scheduled task.

- Create or locate a shortcut that opens OBS.
- Open the Windows Startup folder for your account and place the shortcut there.
- Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, then check whether OBS opens.
Windows may show different navigation depending on its version and configuration. The key is that the shortcut must be in the Startup folder for the account that signs in.
Option 2: Create a Task Scheduler task
Task Scheduler is the more configurable option when you need to choose a trigger or delay OBS startup. Community guidance recommends it as an alternative to a Startup-folder shortcut, including for situations where the PC or OBS may start before network equipment is ready.

- Open Task Scheduler and create a task with a sign-in trigger appropriate to the Windows account that runs OBS.
- Set the action to start the OBS executable. Verify the executable path on your PC rather than copying a path from another installation.
- Set any needed delay or retry behavior for your setup. If OBS streams to YouTube, a delayed launch or retry may help when internet access is not ready immediately after startup; it is not a guarantee of reconnection.
- Save the task, then test it by signing in or restarting under the same account and conditions you expect to use.
One OBS forum example for scheduled recording used the OBS executable as the action, --startrecording --minimize-to-tray as arguments, and the executable directory as “Start in.” The original poster reported that this worked for that recording setup. Those recording arguments do not establish playlist-resume behavior, and should not be treated as a general recipe for automatically streaming.
Test the complete restart and recovery path
Use a controlled restart before relying on unattended operation. A normal reboot is a useful first test; if Windows updates are part of the concern, test the update-and-restart path you expect to encounter as well.

- Restart the PC and sign in to the Windows account configured to launch OBS.
- Confirm OBS opens and that the intended scene is active.
- Confirm the playlist source is present, visible, and actually playing. Check whether it starts on the expected item and whether playback advances; do not infer this from the OBS window opening.
- If you stream to YouTube, check whether the stream is live and whether it remains connected after the network is available.
- Repeat if the first test exposes a timing issue. Adjust the task’s trigger or delay, or use a retry approach suited to your network, then verify again.
Keep the scope of your test in mind: a successful reboot test shows that this machine and configuration worked in that test. It does not prove that every future update, power loss, network delay, or OBS change will recover identically.
Common restart problems and what to check
- OBS does not open: Check that the shortcut is in the Startup folder for the account that signs in, or that the scheduled task’s trigger and executable path are correct.
- OBS opens to the wrong scene: Reopen OBS, select the intended scene, save the scene collection, and repeat the controlled restart test.
- The playlist source is present but not playing as expected: App launch is not proof of playlist restoration. Check the source and active scene, then verify actual playback after restarting. The available community reports do not establish universal playlist-position persistence.
- The YouTube stream fails to connect after restart: Network equipment or internet access may not be ready when OBS launches. Consider a delayed task trigger or a retry mechanism, then test under the same startup conditions. OBS forum guidance also cautions that OBS is not designed for unattended, noninteractive streaming.
- A command-line setting starts the wrong activity: The documented
--startrecording --minimize-to-trayexample is for scheduled recording. Do not assume it starts a stream or resumes a playlist.
