YouTube Live Control Room creates and manages the broadcast; an encoder running on your VPS sends the video and audio. To set up an unattended stream, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, copy its RTMPS server URL and stream key, configure an encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS, start the encoder, check its preview and health in Live Control Room, then click Go live. YouTube does not provide a special 24/7 mode: you must keep the VPS process, source media and network working, and plan separately for interruptions and long-term recording.
Before you start
Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. You also need a video or playlist to send, an encoder that can run on your VPS, and sustained outbound network capacity for the selected stream bitrate. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring stream health rather than assuming a VPS is reliable simply because it is hosted.
- Check channel eligibility and prepare your video source.
- Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate the VPS can encode or pass through.
- Check that the VPS can run the encoder continuously and has enough outbound capacity, with headroom.
- Decide how you will monitor the process and preserve recordings; a live stream and a durable archive are separate jobs.
Create the encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Create > Go live.
- In Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream. YouTube displays the stream URL and stream key in the stream settings.
- Choose the RTMPS server URL if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption. If RTMPS is not available in your encoder, consult its supported protocols and YouTube’s current settings rather than guessing an endpoint.
- Copy the URL and key into the encoder configuration on your VPS. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it can send a feed to that stream. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, shared logs or support messages. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update your encoder.
Use the values shown for your own stream; do not copy a URL or key from an example. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain where to reveal the secure ingest URL and key.
Choose encoder settings and size the VPS network
Match the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to your source and VPS capability. YouTube transcodes an incoming feed into viewer output formats; the incoming settings still determine the quality and bandwidth required between the VPS and YouTube.

H.264 bitrate reference
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates in its current encoder settings guidance, reviewed 2026-10-03. They are recommendations, not VPS plan specifications or guaranteed minimums. YouTube lists different min/max ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC.

Use the settings for your selected codec and output rather than applying the H.264 figures to every encoder. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance also covers codec-specific ranges and other settings.
Allow network headroom
YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup feeds where applicable. For example, a 5 Mbps feed calls for at least 6 Mbps of measured available upload capacity under that recommendation (5 × 1.2). This arithmetic is not a stability guarantee. Test outbound capacity from the VPS and its actual network path; a download-speed result or advertised port speed does not establish sustained upload throughput. Configure and start the VPS encoder
The exact command depends on your operating system, media, codec and FFmpeg build. FFmpeg documents publishing a file to an RTMP server in real time. Use your own Live Control Room endpoint and key in the destination; protect credentials from shell history, process listings and logs where your environment exposes them. This illustrative command reads a file in real time, encodes H.264 video at the specified bitrate and AAC audio, and sends an FLV stream to the supplied RTMP-compatible destination. It is not a universal production configuration: set resolution, frame rate, audio parameters and bitrate for your source and YouTube’s current guidance. Confirm your FFmpeg build and protocol support, and use RTMPS if supported. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes RTMP publishing and RTMPS.

- Start the encoder on the VPS with the selected source file or playlist and your private endpoint credentials.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming stream preview.
- Check picture, audio and stream health. YouTube advises: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.”
- When the preview is correct, click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder comes first; clicking Go live comes after its preview appears.
- Keep monitoring the VPS process and Live Control Room. For unattended operation, arrange your own monitoring and restart approach; a process restart does not guarantee restoration of the same YouTube event or uninterrupted playback.

Plan for a 24/7 broadcast, not just a successful start
Process and connection failures
A VPS removes the need to leave a home computer on, but it does not eliminate failure points. The source file must remain available, the encoder must keep running, and the outbound connection must carry the feed. Monitor both the encoder and stream health; decide who or what will respond if the process exits, the source ends, the VPS reboots or YouTube stops receiving the feed. Automatic process restart can help recover an encoder process, but do not assume it restores the same YouTube event or keeps viewer playback continuous.

Replays and archive preservation
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise a complete automatic replay for one uninterrupted stream lasting longer than 12 hours, so do not rely on a single 24/7 event to produce a complete archive. If replay preservation matters, use a separate recording and archive workflow and verify YouTube’s current behavior before choosing how to divide or record broadcasts.

Copyright and channel policy
Use only material you have the rights to stream, including music, game footage and any third-party clips. A VPS or encoder does not change YouTube’s copyright or channel rules. Review the current restrictions shown for your channel and the relevant YouTube policies before leaving a broadcast unattended; a claim or restriction can affect a live stream or its availability.

An India-hosted VPS is a server location choice; the reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish that it limits the stream to viewers in India. Do not infer viewer eligibility or distribution from server geography.

Common problems and fixes
