To handle longer outages, pair a correctly sized UPS with software that shuts Windows down safely, then configure the PC to power on when mains power returns. You must test whether your login, OBS and YouTube stream recover on your actual setup; restored power alone does not guarantee that OBS or a live stream restarts.
What a UPS can—and cannot—do for OBS
A UPS bridges a brief interruption; it is not an all-night power source unless it is part of a separately sized longer-duration system. Its runtime depends on the connected load, battery condition and the model’s specifications. A stream that must survive outages longer than the UPS can support needs a safe shutdown and restart plan, or another power arrangement sized for the actual outage.
Keep the gear required for the stream on battery-backed outlets: typically the PC and modem/router, plus a monitor if you need it to manage the stream during an interruption. Every additional device draws from the available battery runtime. The UPS must also support the required network equipment if the stream depends on it.
Size the UPS for your PC and network gear
- Work out the load. Measure or estimate the running watt draw of the PC and each device you intend to keep powered, such as a monitor and router. Use actual equipment specifications or a suitable meter rather than choosing a UPS rating from the PC’s power-supply label alone.
- Check both output limits. Compare the total load with the UPS’s maximum watt and VA ratings; both matter. APC by Schneider Electric recommends UPS output watt capacity 20–25% above the connected equipment’s total draw. This is APC’s manufacturer guidance, not a universal standard or a promise of a particular runtime. Read APC’s UPS buying guide.
- Check runtime at your load. Consult the specific UPS manufacturer’s runtime curve or specifications for the load you calculated. Do not infer a fixed number of minutes from the watt/VA rating or the sizing margin.
- Prioritize battery outlets. Connect only the equipment needed to keep the stream alive to battery-backed outlets. A UPS may have outlets that provide surge protection without battery backup, so check the product’s outlet labels and manual.
For India, verify the exact UPS model’s electrical compatibility, local availability, warranty, service support and replacement-battery compatibility before buying. The available guidance does not establish a particular model or runtime for your PC and local conditions.

Set up safe shutdown before the battery runs out
If the outage lasts beyond the UPS’s battery runtime, the goal is to shut Windows down in an orderly way before power is exhausted—not to keep OBS live indefinitely. Where the UPS supports USB monitoring, install the manufacturer’s compatible management software and configure a shutdown threshold that gives Windows time to close safely. APC describes PowerChute as supporting unattended graceful shutdown during disturbances that outlast backup duration; compatibility depends on the UPS family and software version. - Confirm that your UPS model supports computer monitoring and that the correct cable and software are available for it.
- Set the shutdown behavior according to the software and UPS instructions, with enough battery reserve for an orderly Windows shutdown.
- Test the monitoring connection and shutdown behavior with a controlled interruption. Do not wait for a real prolonged outage to find out that the software cannot communicate with the UPS.
Configure startup when utility power returns
A UPS restarting after utility power returns does not necessarily switch the PC back on. APC says the computer may need a BIOS/UEFI option for powering on when AC returns. The setting may be called “Restore AC Power,” “AC Back,” “Power On After AC Loss,” or something similar; names and availability vary by motherboard. Consult the motherboard or PC manual. APC explains the Back-UPS power-restoration behavior.

- Open BIOS/UEFI using the method shown by your PC or motherboard manufacturer.
- Find the power recovery setting and select the option that turns the computer on after AC power is restored. If the setting is absent, do not assume the PC will restart unattended.
- Save the change, then test it by shutting down and simulating a controlled loss and return of power using the UPS and your equipment’s instructions.

Check whether OBS and the stream recover
Even if the PC powers back on, that does not establish that your Windows account signs in unattended, OBS launches, the correct scene and audio devices load, or YouTube resumes the live stream. Configure Windows sign-in and OBS startup only if unattended operation is part of your plan, then verify each stage in a controlled test. Check the stream status where applicable rather than assuming a running OBS window means the YouTube broadcast is live.

OBS lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 among its supported Windows systems and requires a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as a basic Windows requirement. Compatibility is not a performance guarantee: the workload depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the real scene and intended stream workload. Check OBS’s system requirements.
Run a complete recovery test
Test the whole chain—not just whether the UPS beeps or Windows boots. Follow the UPS manufacturer’s safe test procedure and avoid an uncontrolled test that risks hardware or data.

- Start OBS with the scene, encoder, audio devices and network connection you intend to use.
- Confirm the UPS is monitoring correctly and that the connected equipment is on battery-backed outlets.
- Simulate a short interruption according to the UPS instructions. Confirm the PC and required network equipment stay powered.
- For the longer-outage path, verify that the UPS software triggers a graceful Windows shutdown before the battery is depleted.
- Restore utility power and check whether the UPS and PC return to the expected state. Confirm Windows login behavior, network access, OBS startup, scene and audio-device status, and the actual YouTube stream status.
- Repeat the test after changes to Windows, drivers, OBS, UPS software or hardware.
Troubleshoot common power-cut failures
