Either can send a looped prerecorded video to YouTube Live. The available guidance does not establish that either program is inherently more reliable, so plan to test and monitor whichever you use.
OBS vs FFmpeg: which fits your workflow?
| Decision | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Graphical scenes and source controls. | Command-line arguments and process configuration. |
| Loop one file | Media Source has a Loop option. | A third-party guide uses -stream_loop -1 with realtime pacing via -re. |
| Loop a playlist | VLC Video source supports playlists, looping, and shuffle; VLC must be installed. | Can be scripted, but playlist setup depends on the command; the cited guide does not evaluate playlist details. |
| Best fit | Creators who want scene composition and visual source management. | Operators comfortable with scripting, configuration, and supervision. |
| Reliability evidence | No controlled comparative uptime result is established. | No controlled comparative uptime result is established. |
There is no substantiated head-to-head benchmark here for general CPU use or uptime. A third-party FFmpeg example notes that its particular on-the-fly re-encode can keep a CPU core busy; that is not a general comparison of the two programs. OBS’s official Media Sources page is dated 2022-01-11, so its interface details may differ in later releases. OBS Media Sources
What you need before going live
- A prerecorded video or playlist you have the rights to use and a computer capable of running your chosen encoder.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, plus the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube describes the key as the credential that tells YouTube where to receive the feed. Keep it private and reset it if it is exposed. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- An upload connection that can sustain the selected video and audio bitrate, with headroom for variation. Test the actual setup rather than assuming a connection is adequate.
- A plan to check stream health and playback and to notice and recover from interruptions. Encoder choice alone does not guarantee a nonstop broadcast.
Configure YouTube Live settings
YouTube’s current help material lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec, so consult the live settings table for the combination you actually use instead of copying a value out of context. These are live help specifications, not dated research statistics; check them again before publishing. YouTube: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Use it where your encoder supports it, and enter the stream URL and key exactly as shown in Live Control Room. YouTube encoder settings

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up a looping stream in OBS
- Create or schedule the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, and copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password; reset it if it is compromised.
- Add one prerecorded file: In OBS, add a Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop. Check that the file plays with both video and audio in the preview.
- Set the output: Configure resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format to match YouTube’s current guidance and your source. Set the stream service to YouTube and enter the URL and key.
- Test before the public start: Check the preview and stream health, and test representative motion and audio. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube Help
- Monitor the broadcast: Watch for dropped ingest, missing audio, or a frozen/black picture. Decide who will notice a failure and how they will restart or otherwise recover the stream.
Use a playlist instead of one file
Add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist, loop, and shuffle options as needed. This source requires VLC to be installed. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the source can use the matching architecture. Test the transition between playlist items, including audio levels and gaps, before relying on it for a long broadcast. OBS Media Sources
Set up a loop in FFmpeg
FFmpeg can loop a file from the command line and send its output to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. A third-party guide demonstrates -stream_loop -1 for indefinite input repetition together with -re for realtime pacing. Its example copies already prepared video while re-encoding audio. Treat that as one guide’s implementation, not an official YouTube recipe or a tested promise of seamless looping. Streamloop’s FFmpeg guide

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Get the ingest details: Create or schedule your stream in YouTube Studio and copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
- Build the command for your media: Use a reviewed command appropriate to your file, audio, video codec, and YouTube settings. Include the guide’s loop and pacing options where appropriate; configure the destination with the YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Do not assume a command written for a different file will preserve your intended quality or audio.
- Match the output settings: Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format to YouTube’s current guidance. Prefer RTMPS where supported.
- Run a test and inspect it: Confirm YouTube receives the feed, then check playback, audio, and stream health using representative content.
- Supervise the process: Arrange monitoring and a recovery procedure for a stopped process or lost connection. A command that loops input is not, by itself, an operating plan for unattended broadcasting.
Testing and long-run precautions
- Test before launch and confirm the YouTube preview, stream health, audio, and picture. YouTube’s encoder tips also discuss testing failover. YouTube: Live encoder settings and tips
- Keep an operator or alerting process able to notice a failed encoder or lost ingest and act on it. The cited FFmpeg guide warns that long unattended runs may need monitoring, but its claims about failures and drift are not independently verified.
- Do not promise a complete YouTube archive for an indefinitely running stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; the cited setup guidance does not settle how a stream is archived once it exceeds that duration. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Check copyright and YouTube policy for the particular material and channel. Whether a prerecorded stream is permitted or monetizable depends on the creator’s rights and circumstances; neither encoder choice guarantees approval or monetization.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Checks and next steps |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Verify the copied ingest URL and key, confirm the correct stream is selected, and check that the encoder is running. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Video stutters or stream health is poor | Compare the configured bitrate and output format with YouTube’s current recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec. Check available upload capacity and test again. |
| Audio is absent or wrong | Confirm the source has an audio track, the encoder is sending it, and the preview includes sound before launch. |
| OBS VLC source is unavailable | Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and verify the playlist source. |
| The stream stops during a long run | Check whether the encoder process or internet connection stopped, then follow the recovery plan. A looping input option does not restart a failed process or restore a lost connection by itself. |
| The archive is incomplete or absent | Do not assume YouTube creates a complete archive for streams beyond 12 hours; the cited help page specifies automatic archiving only for streams under 12 hours. |
