To keep OBS streaming overnight on a Windows PC, prevent Windows from sleeping while plugged in, enable OBS automatic reconnect for supported network interruptions, and plan separately for power cuts. A computer UPS can help with short outages, but its runtime depends on the connected equipment’s actual watt load. None of these measures guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
Keep Windows awake while OBS is streaming
When Windows sleeps, the processor stops executing normal work, so OBS cannot keep sending a live stream. In Windows 11, configure the sleep timeout for the plugged-in session; turning off the display does not have to put the PC to sleep.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts.
- Set the plugged-in sleep timeout so the PC will not sleep during the planned stream. Choose a duration that covers the session, or the available never-sleep option if appropriate for your PC.
- Set the screen-off timeout separately. The display can turn off if you do not need to watch it, while the computer remains awake.
- Keep the PC connected to power and verify the settings before leaving it unattended.
Microsoft explains that sleep is a low-power state in which the processor is not executing code: Windows sleep and power states. Windows 11’s screen and sleep timeout controls are documented here: Windows power and sleep settings.
If you are using a laptop
Closing the lid may put a laptop to sleep, depending on its configured power action. Check the lid-close behavior in Windows Power Options before streaming with the lid shut, and do not press the power button unless you have verified what it does. Configure OBS automatic reconnect
OBS can retry an output after some supported network disconnections. In OBS, open Settings > Advanced, find the Network section, and enable Automatically Reconnect. Set the retry delay and maximum retries to values suitable for the stream, then apply the settings. The controls and labels can vary between OBS versions; consult OBS’s current output and reconnect documentation: OBS streaming guide.
Reconnect is not a substitute for keeping the computer powered and awake. It cannot recover a stream while the PC is asleep or off, and it does not guarantee that the streaming platform will accept a reconnect. OBS contributor Fenrirthviti, discussing replay-buffer behavior around sleep in an OBS Studio issue, said: “There is no way to reasonably recover from this while an output is active, and we explicitly inhibit sleep while OBS is active. Bypassing this or forcing the PC to sleep is unsupported.” That is contributor guidance in a specific issue discussion, not a blanket compatibility guarantee: OBS Studio issue discussion.

Plan separately for power cuts in India
Automatic reconnect addresses some network interruptions; it does not keep a computer running through a power cut. If power interruptions are a concern, consider a computer UPS battery backup for the PC and the network device the stream needs, such as its router.
Size the UPS for more than the combined watt load of the connected equipment, and check the battery runtime at that load against the backup time you want. Connecting extra devices increases the load and can reduce runtime. An ordinary UPS should not be assumed to power a PC overnight. Schneider Electric explains load sizing and the relationship between connected equipment and runtime in its UPS sizing guidance. Without the PC and network equipment’s wattage and your desired backup duration, a particular UPS capacity or runtime cannot be recommended responsibly.

Test the whole setup before an overnight stream
- Start a private or otherwise low-risk test stream, where your channel’s settings allow it.
- Confirm that OBS is using the intended scene, video, and audio sources.
- Verify that the PC stays awake with the display configuration you plan to use. If it is a laptop, test the lid and power-button behavior too.
- Check that OBS automatic reconnect is enabled and observe how it responds to a network interruption you can safely simulate.
- If using a UPS, check its load and runtime estimate with the essential PC and network equipment connected.
A test can expose configuration problems, but it cannot guarantee that a future power, network, PC, or platform-side interruption will be recovered.
Optional: launch OBS and start streaming automatically
OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter. It can request that OBS start streaming when launched, but it does not solve Windows sign-in requirements, network failure, power loss, or platform-side problems. Treat unattended startup as an advanced setup and test it before relying on it overnight.

- Configure OBS and save the profile and scene collection you want to use.
- Set up a Windows shortcut or task to launch OBS with the
--startstreamingparameter. - For a shortcut or task, set its Start in working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS’s Windows automation guidance specifies. - Test the complete launch flow, including any Windows sign-in behavior and the resulting stream, before leaving it unattended.
