How to Show a Countdown or Holding Screen Between Videos in an FFmpeg Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Generate the countdown or holding screen as its own timed video segment, then place it between your clips. For unlike source files, use FFmpeg’s concat filter to normalize and re-encode the segments; the concat demuxer is an option only when their streams, codecs, and time bases match. A finite render is different from a live process that must stay connected and wait for more videos.

Choose the kind of interstitial you need

A holding screen is a video segment shown between clips. It can be a solid color, a still image, or a background with a logo. A countdown is text that changes over that segment’s duration. Tie it to the segment’s elapsed time rather than the wall clock unless you specifically want a scheduled clock.

  • Fixed holding screen: show a static image or background for a chosen duration.
  • Countdown: render changing text over a background, deciding whether it starts at the full duration, how it rounds fractional seconds, and whether zero appears.

FFmpeg’s filters documentation describes the color, drawtext, overlay, and loop filters. drawtext requires a build with libfreetype; check your installed build and use a font file that exists on the host. A font name alone may depend on fontconfig support.

Generate a timed countdown slate

This illustrative command creates a 10-second, 1920×1080, 30 fps black slate with centered white text. Replace the font path and adjust the size, frame rate, duration, text, and output for your setup.

ffmpeg -f lavfi -i "color=c=black:s=1920x1080:r=30:d=10"
  -vf "drawtext=fontfile=/path/to/font.ttf:text='Next video in %{eif\:max(0\,10-t)\:d}':fontsize=64:fontcolor=white:x=(w-text_w)/2:y=(h-text_h)/2"
  -t 10 slate.mp4

The expression counts down from the segment’s local elapsed time, clamping the displayed value at zero. Whether the first visible value is 10 or 9, and how long zero remains visible, depends on the expression and frame timing; preview the slate and adjust it to the desired behavior. The command is illustrative, not tested. Escaping rules vary by shell, operating system, and FFmpeg build, so verify the expression with your installed version.

Use a still image or add a logo

You can use an image as the holding screen or composite a logo over a generated background with overlay. Keep the image input available for the entire slate interval and make the input timestamps align. The filters documentation notes that overlay inputs are consumed in timestamp order; when initial timestamps are offset, resetting them with setpts=PTS-STARTPTS may help.

The loop video filter can repeat a specified number of frames, including indefinitely, but the finished output still needs an explicit duration or stop condition. An indefinitely repeated image alone does not define when the interstitial ends.

Insert the slate between clips

Choose the concat method based on whether your clips already have compatible streams and whether you can re-encode. FFmpeg’s concatenating media FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. The formats documentation states that concat-demuxer inputs need matching streams.

Method Use it when Important constraints
Concat filter Clips or the slate need normalization, or re-encoding is acceptable. Decode the segments, make their video and audio properties compatible in the filtergraph, then encode the joined output. Include audio handling if the output needs continuous audio.
Concat demuxer Inputs already have compatible streams and you want sequential file playback without re-encoding. Files must have the same streams, including codecs and time base. The demuxer uses file durations to place the next segment, so inaccurate duration metadata can cause timestamp artifacts or gaps. Make the slate’s codecs and stream layout match the clips.

Concat filter workflow

  1. Inspect the clips and slate for dimensions, frame rates, pixel formats, audio sample rates, and channel layouts.
  2. Normalize video and audio properties as needed in a -filter_complex graph, then concatenate the segments in order: clip, slate, next clip.
  3. Map the intended video and audio outputs explicitly with -map, then encode with settings and a muxer supported by the destination.
  4. Play the resulting file through each transition and check for black frames, timestamp jumps, missing audio, or an unexpected countdown value.

This is a workflow, not a universal command: the correct graph depends on the number and properties of the inputs. FFmpeg’s documentation covers complex filtergraphs and stream mapping.

Concat demuxer workflow

  1. Create a text playlist with one file entry per segment in the intended order, including the slate.
  2. Confirm every file has the same stream layout, codecs, and time base; a still or generated slate may need to be encoded to match the clips.
  3. Check the duration metadata for each file. Because the demuxer uses durations to position later files, incorrect values can create gaps or timestamp artifacts.
  4. Concatenate the playlist and inspect the joins, especially the transition into and out of the slate.

Do not assume that arbitrary MP4 files can be joined with -c copy. The concat demuxer and concat filter have different requirements, and a file extension does not guarantee compatible streams.

Keep audio and timing intentional

Decide whether the output should carry audio throughout the interstitial. If neighboring segments have audio but the slate does not, the chosen concat method may expose an audio gap or stream-layout mismatch. One option is to give the slate matching silent audio; another is to build a filtergraph that keeps the output audio continuous. Match the audio stream layout required by the chosen method.

  • Set the slate’s duration explicitly and verify that it matches the intended pause.
  • Use timestamps consistently across image and video inputs; reset offset initial timestamps when needed.
  • Map the desired output streams explicitly, then confirm the video codec, pixel format, frame rate, audio codec, and container meet the destination’s requirements.

Separate a finite render from a continuous live stream

A playlist rendered to an RTMP, HLS, or DASH destination is not automatically a persistent live service. A job that must keep a connection open after its current playlist ends needs an explicit plan for what happens next: for example, whether the process exits, waits for new clips, or repeats a defined sequence. FFmpeg’s documentation establishes filtergraph composition, concatenation behavior, stream mapping, and examples for particular output protocols; it does not establish one universal live queue or scheduling design.

A production-ready live command depends on your FFmpeg version and build, input media, audio policy, output protocol, and scheduling requirements. Establish those details before choosing the graph and output options; do not treat the illustrative slate command as a complete live-stream command.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • drawtext is unavailable: the FFmpeg build may lack libfreetype. Check the installed build’s filter support or use a build that includes the dependency.
  • The font is missing or different: provide a valid font-file path. A font-family name may rely on fontconfig and may not resolve on every system.
  • The countdown does not parse: inspect escaping at each layer—the shell, filtergraph, and expression. The example may need changes for your platform and build.
  • The first or last number looks wrong: choose whether the count begins at the full duration or the next lower second, then decide whether zero should appear for a full second. Preview at the target frame rate.
  • The demuxer produces gaps or artifacts: verify stream compatibility and duration metadata. If the files differ or durations are unreliable, use a normalized re-encode workflow with the concat filter.
  • Audio drops out at the slate: provide matching slate audio, such as silence, or construct continuous audio in the filtergraph; confirm the output stream mapping.
  • An overlay starts late or is misaligned: check input timestamps and consider resetting offset initial timestamps with setpts=PTS-STARTPTS.
  • The live output ends with the playlist: a finite sequence does not define what should happen afterward. Specify the queue, repeat, or waiting behavior for the service and protocol you use.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a local FFmpeg process: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploads from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card.

The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a camera feed. See StreamNeo or pricing and plans, then start the free first day.
