To keep an OBS stream running through a power cut, put both the streaming computer and the modem/router on a UPS or other suitable backup supply. Size it for their combined real-world load and the runtime you need: a UPS only lasts as long as its available battery power, and it cannot fix an internet-service outage. After power returns, check OBS and the event in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the same live stream resumed.
What a power cut interrupts
OBS encodes video on your computer and sends it over the internet to YouTube. A mains failure can stop the computer, but it can also switch off the router or modem. Even if both stay powered, an outage affecting your internet service can still break the connection. OBS describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
That means a UPS for the PC alone may not be enough. The full path needs power: the computer, the networking equipment it relies on, and an available internet connection.
Set up backup power before the next outage
1. Put the computer and network gear on battery-backed outlets
Connect the OBS computer and the modem/router to outlets that provide battery backup, not outlets that offer surge protection only. If your internet setup uses separate modem, router, or other networking equipment, include the devices needed to maintain the connection. Schneider Electric India’s UPS buying guide explains that a UPS supplies battery power when mains power fails, but runtime depends on the load.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Size the UPS for the actual load and target runtime
Add the simultaneous wattage of the devices you need to keep running, then select a UPS with adequate capacity and headroom. Check the manufacturer’s runtime information at a load close to yours; a headline VA rating by itself does not tell you how long your particular setup will run. More connected equipment means less available runtime, and battery age and operating conditions can affect performance. There is no reliable universal number of minutes or hours for an unspecified PC-and-router setup.
If the required backup period exceeds what a suitably sized UPS can provide, plan another compatible backup source. For a separate modem/router battery backup, verify the device’s required output voltage, current, connector, and polarity against its label and manufacturer documentation before buying.

3. Prefer a wired connection
Where practical, connect the streaming computer to the router with Ethernet. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Check the cables and networking devices as well as the wireless or wired link; an Ethernet connection does not protect against a powered-off router or an unavailable ISP connection.
4. Test the arrangement safely
Before relying on the setup, run a test stream and confirm the YouTube Live Control Room preview, event accessibility, and local recording. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend encoder preflight and monitoring. Test your backup-power arrangement separately in a controlled way, following the UPS manufacturer’s instructions; do not wait for an actual outage to discover which outlets are battery-backed or how long the equipment lasts.

What to do when power returns
- Restore the complete connection. Confirm that the computer, modem/router, and internet service are back. If OBS remains disconnected, check its connection state and log.
- Inspect the existing event in YouTube Studio. Open its Live Control Room and check whether the event is active, whether audio and video are arriving, and what the stream health indicates. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking the encoder output and the outbound internet connection separately.
- Reconnect OBS if needed. Restore the configured encoder connection and confirm in Studio that YouTube is receiving the stream. Do not expose your stream key while troubleshooting; use YouTube’s account controls to manage the credential if it needs replacing.
- Check the recording before closing anything. Verify that the local recording or archive file exists and is intact before you close applications. YouTube’s encoder-stream guidance recommends checking archive growth and integrity as part of preparation.
- Escalate a connection problem appropriately. If OBS appears to be sending normally but YouTube receives a poor or absent stream, investigate the outbound internet connection. Contact your ISP if the connection problem persists.
- Tell viewers only after verifying the event. Confirm what viewers can see and hear before announcing that the stream is back.
Will OBS automatically resume the same YouTube live event?
Do not count on it. The official OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not specify a universal recovery window after complete PC power loss or guarantee that an encoder restart will resume the same event for every configuration. When the computer is back, check the existing event in Live Control Room and confirm its status and incoming audio/video before deciding whether to continue or take another action.
YouTube also describes testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking whether the player switches to a backup encoder. That is a test of a configured failover setup; it is not a promise that a single OBS computer will recover automatically after a power cut.

Troubleshooting after an interruption
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS is disconnected | Confirm PC and router/modem power, internet availability, and OBS connection state or log. | Restore the network path, then reconnect OBS and verify receipt in YouTube Studio. |
| OBS appears connected, but YouTube has no usable video or audio | Check encoder output in OBS and stream health in Live Control Room. | Separate an encoder issue from an outbound connection issue; test internet connectivity and contact the ISP if needed. |
| The router is off even though the PC is running | Check whether the networking equipment is connected to a battery-backed UPS outlet. | Power the network gear from a suitable backup source and verify service is available. |
| The UPS runs out before the outage ends | Compare actual simultaneous device load and desired runtime with manufacturer runtime information. | Reduce the backed-up load where appropriate or choose a compatible backup arrangement designed for the needed runtime. |
| The live event’s status is unclear after restart | Inspect the relevant event and incoming audio/video in YouTube Studio. | Do not assume the same event recovered; confirm what viewers see before communicating that it is live again. |
| The stream is back, but the recording is uncertain | Check the local recording or archive file before closing applications. | Verify that the file exists and is intact; keep local recording checks in your preflight routine. |
