Frontier has confirmed the release-to-reserve system, but the exact eligibility checks, welfare thresholds and reserve-health variables had not been published by October 13, 2026, so any precise checklist must wait for the released game.
Important status note: Frontier’s Steam listing gave October 13, 2026 as Planet Zoo 2’s release date, but it was still marked available for pre-purchase when the information for this guide was checked. The instructions below therefore explain the confirmed design and a careful launch-day method, not tested interface steps or guaranteed thresholds.

What Frontier has confirmed about released animals
Frontier describes a system in which animals can move from your zoo into large, customisable Wildlife Reserves. The official Steam description says players will “meet specific requirements to release your animals into fully customisable, expansive Wildlife Reserves across the globe in living ecosystems created by you.” You can read the listing at Frontier’s Planet Zoo 2 Steam page.

The reserve is not presented as a simple storage area. Frontier calls it a living ecosystem that players design and rewild, then observe and improve through research. Its Wildlife Reserves announcement describes the goal as: “Design, rewild and observe a network of entirely natural homes that allow your animals to thrive.” That wording describes the intended feature, not a promise that one particular layout or action automatically produces a health result. The game’s official description also says that species have their own needs and behaviours. That makes habitat suitability the central principle for keeping a released animal well: a reserve should provide the conditions that the species, rather than the player’s preferred scenery, requires.
The release-to-reserve workflow
Until the game exposes its final menus, use this sequence as a decision framework. It follows the features Frontier has announced without inventing a percentage, age requirement, species list or reserve score.
- Care for the animal in the zoo. Meet its ordinary species-specific needs and resolve visible welfare problems before attempting a release.
- Check the release gate. Open the conservation or animal-management screen that offers release and read every requirement shown for that animal or project. Frontier confirms that a gate exists, but has not published its exact conditions.
- Choose a suitable Wildlife Reserve. Consider whether the reserve’s climate, terrain, vegetation, water and available space match the species. The game’s public material confirms customisable natural homes, not a fixed compatibility chart.
- Confirm the release. Review the destination and any warning or confirmation panel before committing. Do not assume that a successful transfer proves the animal is already thriving.
- Rewild and observe. Shape the reserve as a functioning habitat, then use the game’s observation and research tools to watch what happens and respond to the information the released build provides.
Step 1: Prepare animals before release
Start with species-specific needs
Planet Zoo 2 is announced as a simulation in which species have distinct needs and behaviours. In practical terms, that means the same reserve design should not be treated as universally suitable. Before release, identify what the game shows for that species and make those needs the basis of your preparation rather than trying to maximise a generic score.
Gamesplanet’s October 12, 2026 preview gives food, water and habitat enrichment as general examples of animal needs. It is secondary context rather than a complete Frontier checklist, so use it as a reminder to inspect those categories if the game displays them, not as proof of a particular threshold or interface label. Resolve visible problems first
If the zoo view reports inadequate food, water, shelter, enrichment or another welfare issue, fix it before opening the release process. A release should be the next step after care, not a way to remove an animal from a problem enclosure. The public announcements do not establish whether pre-release welfare carries over numerically into reserve health, so do not assume that a high zoo welfare value will protect an animal after transfer.

Do not invent an eligibility target
Frontier has not published a required welfare percentage, health state, age, breeding status or species list for release. If the launch build displays one of those conditions, follow the value shown in the game and record the exact wording for future reference. Until then, claims such as “release only at 90% welfare” or “animals must be adults” are unsupported.
Step 2: Read the release requirement gate carefully
The requirement gate is the one confirmed prerequisite. Frontier’s wording establishes that players must meet “specific requirements,” but the reviewed official material does not say whether those requirements belong to the animal, the conservation project, the destination reserve or a combination of them.
When the released game is available, check the gate in this order:
- Open the animal, conservation project or reserve panel that offers the release command.
- Read every listed condition, including any requirement that is collapsed behind an information icon.
- Separate conditions already satisfied from conditions still outstanding.
- Check whether the destination reserve has its own unlock, research or construction condition.
- Confirm the animal and destination again immediately before release, because a project requirement may not be the same as an individual animal requirement.
If the command is unavailable, treat the message in the game as authoritative for that build. Do not substitute a community-made threshold or assume that improving one welfare category will satisfy an unrelated conservation objective.
Step 3: Build a reserve that can support the species
Think in habitat fit, not decoration
Frontier presents Wildlife Reserves as living ecosystems and says players can design and rewild natural homes. Start with the environmental conditions the species needs, then add scenery and presentation. A visually attractive reserve is not automatically suitable if the game models a mismatch between the animal and its surroundings.

At launch, inspect the tools the reserve editor provides for terrain, vegetation, water and other habitat elements. Use the species information panel, if available, to compare those elements with the animal’s stated needs. The published material does not identify exact climate bands, acreage values, vegetation counts or water volumes, so those values must come from the game rather than from a pre-release guide.

Frontier describes reserves as expansive and natural rather than as conventional exhibit boxes. Plan pathways, viewing areas and infrastructure around the habitat instead of dividing every animal into a tightly bounded display. This is a design recommendation based on the reserve concept; no official source specifies a minimum area or proves that a larger map always improves health.
Match each release to the destination
Before confirming a transfer, ask whether the selected reserve can provide the species’ requirements without forcing an unsuitable compromise. If the game offers several regions or reserve templates, compare only the attributes it actually documents. Frontier has not published a universal “best” reserve, and the available sources do not establish comparative health outcomes for different layouts.
Step 4: Rewild after the animal arrives
Release is not the end of management. Frontier’s feature description explicitly links releasing animals with designing, rewilding and observing natural homes. Once an animal is in the reserve, use the tools available in the released build to make the habitat more complete and to respond to what the ecosystem reports.
- Check the animal’s location and status. Confirm that the transfer completed and identify where the animal is spending time.
- Look for resource access. If the game reports food, water, shelter or enrichment access, verify that the animal can reach those resources rather than merely seeing them placed on the map.
- Review behaviour and needs. Species-specific behaviours may reveal whether the environment is suitable. Do not treat one observed action as proof of health unless the game links it to a health or welfare indicator.
- Adjust the habitat gradually. Change the feature connected to the warning you can actually see, then observe again. Avoid rebuilding the entire reserve when the game identifies one correctable issue.
The sources do not establish which reserve variables affect health, whether population density matters, or what happens when an animal fails to thrive. Those mechanics require confirmation from the released game.

Step 5: Observe and use research
Frontier names observation and research as core reserve activities and says research can improve reserves. It does not explain the research tree, unlocks, priorities or numerical effects. Consequently, the safest launch method is to use research as an information loop rather than assuming that a particular topic is always optimal.
- Observe the reserve after the release has had time to settle.
- Record the animal’s reported needs, behaviour and any health or welfare warnings shown by the game.
- Run or assign the research option that the interface makes available for that reserve.
- Apply only changes supported by the resulting information.
- Observe again and verify whether the displayed condition changed.
Frontier also describes reserves as operating with minimal staff presence. That does not establish that staffing is irrelevant or that animals require no care; it means the announced feature is intended to function as a natural ecosystem rather than a standard zoo exhibit. Follow any staffing, monitoring or maintenance requirements shown in the game.

“Thriving” is Frontier’s description of the reserve goal, not a published numeric rating. Use the released build’s own indicators to distinguish a successful transfer from a merely completed one.
Look for explicit health and welfare indicators
If the animal panel shows health, welfare, stress, nutrition, hydration or another status, use those labels exactly as the game defines them. Track the direction of the indicator after a habitat change instead of assuming that a single green icon represents long-term success.

Check needs across time
A reserve can appear correct immediately after release while an unmet need emerges later. Revisit the animal after observation and research cycles, especially after changing terrain, vegetation, water or other habitat components. The sources do not provide a time interval, so use the cadence the game’s simulation and notifications establish.

Separate evidence from assumptions
An animal being present in the reserve proves that the transfer occurred. It does not prove that the habitat is suitable, that pre-release welfare carried over, or that the population will remain healthy. Require an explicit in-game status, behaviour explanation or reserve report before treating an outcome as verified.
Troubleshooting a failed release or declining health
The release command is unavailable
- Read the exact requirement message and identify whether it refers to the animal, a project or the reserve.
- Resolve the stated condition rather than applying a guessed welfare percentage.
- Check whether the destination reserve itself must be built, researched or rewilded first.
- Confirm that the animal is still the one selected when you reopen the release panel.
The animal releases but does not thrive
- Open the animal and reserve status panels and follow the first explicit warning.
- Compare the habitat with the species’ displayed needs.
- Verify access to any reported food, water, shelter or enrichment resources.
- Observe the reserve again after one controlled change so you can identify what helped.
The reserve seems healthy but the result is unclear
Do not infer a hidden score. Use the game’s reports, research output and animal status to determine whether the condition is improving. If no indicator exists, the public material currently offers no verified way to calculate a thriving threshold.
What remains unknown before launch
The following details were not specified in Frontier’s public listing or Wildlife Reserves announcement:
- The exact release eligibility checklist.
- Any required welfare or health percentage.
- Minimum or maximum age, sex, species or population conditions.
- Whether zoo welfare values carry over into reserve health.
- Which terrain, climate, vegetation, water, density or enrichment variables affect health.
- How research changes a reserve, what it unlocks and which topic should be prioritised.
- What events or conditions prevent an animal from thriving after release.
Do not fill these gaps with numbers from another game or with an unverified community checklist. Update this guide only when the released build, an official manual or documented post-launch information establishes the mechanics.

Bottom line for pre-release players
The reliable strategy is a loop, not a magic threshold: care for the animal, satisfy the release gate, build a species-appropriate natural home, then observe and improve the reserve. Frontier has confirmed that framework, but not the exact numbers or interface steps. Treat every precise requirement as unverified until Planet Zoo 2’s released build displays it.
