Balance narration and cartoon audio by listening to representative parts of the full mix, adjusting levels at the source and in OBS, and checking the result in a test recording. Matching meter bars alone will not make two sounds seem equally loud. Use compression only for troublesome peaks, watch for clipping, and test transitions as well as individual clips.
Why narration and cartoon audio can sound uneven
Meter readings are useful, but they do not tell the whole story. Speech and effects with similar-looking readings can sound different to viewers; OBS cautions that other sounds may seem louder than a voice even when their mixer levels look similar. Treat its green, yellow and red zones as rough cues, not a prescribed narration-to-cartoon ratio: speech can reach the upper yellow range, while background music and effects generally sit lower, in green. These are starting points for the OBS meter, not guarantees of a balanced mix. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
The mix can also change from scene to scene or clip to clip. A quiet spoken passage, a shouted line, music, and a sudden cartoon effect each need to be heard in context. The goal is intelligible narration without flattening the cartoon’s intentional dynamics.
Balance levels in OBS, then listen to the mix
1. Check representative passages
Play sections that include quiet and loud narration, cartoon dialogue, music, effects, and transitions between clips. Listen to the actual stream mix rather than trying to make every source’s meter show the same level. Check on headphones if available and on another representative playback device, such as speakers; headphones can help with monitoring but are optional.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Adjust levels from the source outward
Start with the playback application’s or device’s own volume or gain control. Check the operating-system mixer where it affects the signal, then adjust the OBS mixer fader if needed. Listen both to the audio before it enters OBS and through OBS monitoring. For a media-source loop, verify which audio paths reach the stream: duplicate routing of the same audio can make it unexpectedly louder. OBS recommends checking levels by listening as well as watching the mixer. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
3. Use compression sparingly for peaks
If a narration track has occasional loud words, or an effect jumps sharply above the rest, modest compression on that source may reduce the peaks before you make the final level adjustment. Listen for pumping and preserve changes in cartoon dynamics that are meant to be heard. There is no validated universal OBS threshold, ratio, attack, or release setting for this combination of content. Real-time correction cannot know what comes next and can override intended dynamic changes; peak limiting may be used when a real-time loudness controller applies gain. 4. Keep the output below clipping
OBS identifies 0 dBFS as digital full scale; exceeding it risks clipping and distortion. Its main meter bar is a peak programme meter, while the smaller moving indicator is a short-window VU-style measurement that is closer to sound pressure or loudness. Use peak hold to spot unexpectedly loud passages, but do not treat a safe peak as proof that narration and cartoon audio have consistent perceived loudness. OBS also documents −20 dBFS as an alignment level and −9 dBFS as the meter’s permitted maximum level in its technical explanation; these describe OBS meter conventions and margins, not required stream settings or a YouTube loudness target. When to normalize audio files before streaming
If you can edit the finished audio files, measuring integrated loudness in LUFS can help compare whole sections or files. Audacity’s Loudness Normalization effect lets you select a LUFS target. Its documented default is −23 LUFS, which Audacity describes as the EBU R 128 broadcast target and a reasonable default for broadcast spoken word. It also notes that streaming platforms’ published targets are usually a few LU higher. This is not a documented YouTube Live target: YouTube’s live encoder guidance does not specify a LUFS target. For ordinary stereo material, normalize the left and right channels together. Audacity warns that normalizing the channels independently can change stereo balance; separate treatment is appropriate only when the channels are genuinely separate recordings. Audacity: Loudness Normalization
Test the whole loop before going live
- Choose a representative stretch. Include narration, cartoon dialogue, music, transitions, and the loudest effects—not just the opening.
- Record a test in OBS. Listen to the recording from start to finish on a monitoring device and, if practical, another playback device. Note passages where narration becomes hard to understand or a sound is unexpectedly loud.
- Make a small adjustment at the appropriate point in the chain. Recheck the same passages after changing source volume, operating-system volume, an OBS fader, or a filter.
- Check the stream health while live. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube live encoder settings OBS likewise recommends recording a normal session and listening back before going live. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
Audio encoding is separate from volume balance
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations include 44.1 kHz stereo audio, 128 Kbps stereo audio, and AAC or MP3 audio codecs. These are encoding settings; they do not make separate narration and cartoon sources equally loud. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Troubleshoot common level problems
- Narration is hard to hear, but meters look similar: Listen to the actual mix and raise or lower the relevant source at its own control, then in OBS if needed. Meter similarity is not a reliable perceptual match.
- The mix jumps louder on a clip or transition: Check that the clip is not routed through two audio paths, then compare levels across the transition in a recording. Balance the source or file that causes the jump.
- Sound distorts on loud words or effects: Check OBS peak hold and reduce the level before the output clips. If peaks are occasional, try restrained compression on that source and listen for pumping.
- Meter peaks look safe, but one element still dominates: Peak level and perceived loudness are different checks. Compare representative passages by listening; use integrated LUFS measurement for whole-file comparisons if available.
- Stereo sounds off after file normalization: Check whether left and right channels were normalized independently. For ordinary stereo material, process them together to preserve balance.

Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Before uploading, balance narration and cartoon audio in the recording: cloud playback does not replace audio editing or mixing.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
