To keep a StreamYard broadcast from being interrupted by laptop sleep, change your computer’s power settings so it stays awake for the entire broadcast. You can usually let the display turn off separately; the key is preventing the computer itself from sleeping. Test the setup with a short live stream before an important event.
Keep the laptop awake during the broadcast
In your operating system’s power or energy settings, extend or disable the system sleep timeout for the power condition you’ll use during the stream—plugged in, on battery, or both. Set the timeout long enough to cover the broadcast.
Sleep and display-off are separate settings on systems that offer both. You can allow the screen to turn off while keeping the computer awake. The exact menus vary by operating-system version and device, and current Windows and macOS menu paths are not established here; look for the system sleep control rather than changing only the screen timeout.
Do not assume closing the laptop lid is safe. What happens when the lid closes depends on the computer’s settings and hardware.

Check the fix before going live
- Change the system sleep timeout for the power condition you intend to use.
- Open StreamYard in a supported browser and set up a brief test broadcast. StreamYard describes its service as a browser-based live video tool, and its setup guidance calls for a laptop or desktop, a connected microphone and camera, and stable internet. Its device guidance recommends Chrome; its onboarding guidance recommends Chrome or Edge on desktop. Check StreamYard’s current guidance if your browser setup differs: StreamYard Help Center.
- Let the laptop sit through the period when it would normally sleep. Confirm the computer stays awake and that the broadcast remains usable.
- YouTube recommends trying a test live stream before an event; the test may be public or unlisted. Confirm the audience and visibility settings before starting: YouTube Help: Create a live stream on mobile.
If the stream still has trouble
Sleep is only one possible cause of interruptions or poor stream quality. StreamYard identifies poor or unstable internet as a common cause of blurry or laggy streams and recommends hardwiring to the router: “We recommend that you hardwire (Ethernet) to your router.” Ethernet can improve connection stability, but it does not prevent the laptop from sleeping. - The computer goes to sleep: Recheck the system sleep timeout for the power condition in use. A display-off setting alone may not control system sleep.
- The picture is blurry or laggy: Check connection stability. If possible, try Ethernet, another network or device, and restarting network equipment.
- The browser or device behaves unexpectedly: Check StreamYard’s current browser and device guidance, then try another supported browser or device if available.
- The connection drops: Check the network and StreamYard’s troubleshooting guidance. Its descriptions of what happens when internet is lost distinguish between pre-recorded streams and live studio sessions; they do not establish that a broadcast will continue if the host laptop sleeps, the browser closes, power is lost, or the network fails.
