| Action | How long the restriction lasts | Best use | Where it is performed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kick | Temporary; the player can rejoin immediately | Stopping a disruption without preventing a return | TAB player list or developer console |
| Timed ban | The number of seconds you specify | A cooling-off period with a defined end | Developer console |
| Permanent ban | Blocks the player from joining until the ban is reversed | Serious or repeated rule violations | TAB player list, developer console, or a persistent blocklist |
| Blocklist entry | Remains in force across restarts while the KU ID stays in the file | A file-based restriction on a managed dedicated server | blocklist.txt |
A kick is not a ban: it removes the player from the current session but does not stop an immediate rejoin. A timed ban uses seconds, while a permanent ban has no duration supplied to the command.
Check your administrator access first
You must be assigned as an administrator before the kick and ban controls or the corresponding commands will work. Confirm that you are connected with the administrator privileges configured for this server. If the shoe or hammer controls are absent, or the console commands fail without changing the player’s status, resolve the administrator assignment before troubleshooting the command syntax.

Do not confuse an administrator role with being the host who happens to be playing. The permission must be recognized by the active server instance. If you operate through a hosting panel, make changes only after identifying the running cluster and the account or role that has server administration rights.
Choose the right method
The in-game list is the fastest option when the offender is currently visible. Console commands are more precise because they target a KU identifier rather than a display name. The file method is the persistent option for a managed dedicated server, but it requires stopping and restarting that server.

Kick or ban from the TAB player list
Open the list and select the player
- Join the server using an account with administrator privileges.
- Hold TAB to open the player list.
- Locate the player you need to remove. Check the displayed identity carefully before selecting an action, particularly when several players have similar names.
Kick the player
With the target selected, click the shoe icon. The server removes the player from the current session. This is appropriate when you need to stop an immediate problem but are willing to let the player reconnect.
Ban the player
With the target selected, click the hammer icon. This applies a ban that blocks the player from joining. Use it when a simple removal is not enough, and verify that you selected the intended person before confirming the action.
The list method is convenient because it does not require copying an identifier. Its trade-off is that you are relying on the player-list selection rather than entering the KU ID yourself.
Use the developer console and KU IDs
The console gives you an unambiguous target. A display name can be mistyped or shared, whereas a KU ID identifies the account used by the server.

Find the KU ID
- While connected as an administrator, press
~to open the developer console. - Run
c_listallplayers(). - Find the intended player in the output and copy the KU identifier. An example format is
KU_oD8s1Au4. - Use that identifier exactly inside the command, including the
KU_prefix and quotation marks.
Use the ID from the current server output rather than relying on memory or a display name. This avoids applying a restriction to the wrong account.
Kick with TheNet:Kick
Replace the example ID with the value returned by c_listallplayers():
TheNet:Kick("KU_oD8s1Au4")
This removes the player temporarily and allows an immediate rejoin.
Apply a permanent ban with TheNet:Ban
TheNet:Ban("KU_oD8s1Au4")
The command blocks that KU ID from joining. Because it has no time argument, treat it as the permanent form and use it only when that level of restriction is intended.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Apply a timed ban with TheNet:BanForTime
TheNet:BanForTime("KU_oD8s1Au4", 120)
The second argument is a duration in seconds. In this example, 120 means 120 seconds. Replace it with the number of seconds you want; do not enter minutes unless you have converted them first.
Check command formatting
- Use the colon exactly as shown in
TheNet:Kick,TheNet:Ban, andTheNet:BanForTime. - Put the KU ID in quotation marks.
- For a timed ban, separate the ID and the seconds with a comma.
- Do not replace the KU ID with a player’s visible name.
- Run
c_listallplayers()again if you are uncertain which account is connected.
Klei’s Dedicated Server Command Line Options Guide, dated July 15, 2026, cautions that command lines are used at the operator’s own risk. Test the selected ID and the intended duration before pressing Enter.

Maintain a persistent ban with blocklist.txt
A file-based ban is useful when you manage a dedicated server and want the restriction to remain after a restart. This workflow is different from clicking the hammer icon or issuing a runtime command because it edits the server’s configuration files.
Stop the server before editing
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly from its control panel or service manager.
- Wait until the server is fully stopped before opening its files. Editing a file while the service is writing can leave the change unsaved or inconsistent.
Open the active cluster directory
In the managed-server layout documented for this workflow, the file is in /config/<cluster-name>/. Replace <cluster-name> with the cluster that the server actually launches. Do not edit a similarly named inactive cluster.

That cluster contains cluster.ini and shard directories such as Master, where server.ini is stored.
| Operating system | Default Klei storage root | Default configuration and cluster |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | <Documents>/Klei |
DoNotStarveTogether/Cluster_1 |
| macOS | <home>/Documents/Klei |
DoNotStarveTogether/Cluster_1 |
| Linux | ~/.klei |
DoNotStarveTogether/Cluster_1 |
Hosted control panels can present a different interface while still mapping to the same cluster-and-shard organization. Confirm the configured Klei storage root and the cluster named by the running service before changing anything.
Create or edit the file
- Inside the active cluster directory, create
blocklist.txtif it does not already exist. - Enter one KU ID per line, with no display names substituted for IDs.
- Save the file in plain text.
- Review each line for accidental spaces, missing characters, or a copied ID belonging to another player.
KU_oD8s1Au4
For multiple players, place each KU ID on its own line rather than combining them on one line.
Restart and verify
- Start the server again after saving the file.
- Allow the service to finish loading the active cluster.
- Have the affected account attempt to join, or check the server’s connection output, to confirm that the intended ID is blocked.
Removing a KU ID from blocklist.txt and restarting reverses that file-based block. Keep a backup of the previous file if you administer a busy world and need an audit trail of changes.

How to unban a player
Remove a file-based ban
For a ban created or maintained through blocklist.txt, stop the server, delete the player’s KU ID from the file, save the edited file, and restart the same cluster. The ID must be removed as a complete line; deleting only part of it does not identify the account correctly.
- Stop the active server.
- Open
/config/<cluster-name>/blocklist.txt, or the corresponding active cluster location in your control panel. - Delete the target KU ID line.
- Save the file and restart the server.
- Confirm that the account can connect after the restart.
Separate runtime bans from the file
The documented console commands specify how to kick, permanently ban, or time-ban a KU ID, but they do not provide a separate console unban command. If a player remains blocked after you remove an ID from the file, determine whether the restriction was created by a runtime command, a host control panel, or another active cluster configuration. Check the exact cluster the server launches and the management interface that applied the ban before changing additional files.
Do not assume that editing an unused cluster will remove a restriction. The running service reads the configuration associated with its active cluster, not necessarily the default Cluster_1.
Troubleshoot failed kicks and bans
The shoe and hammer icons are missing
- Confirm that your account has administrator privileges on this server.
- Leave and rejoin using the account that was granted administration rights.
- Check that you are operating the intended world or shard rather than a different server instance.
Without administrator access, changing the TAB view or repeatedly clicking will not grant permission.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe command runs but affects the wrong person
Run c_listallplayers() again and compare the complete KU ID, including capitalization and the KU_ prefix. Display names are not a substitute for the identifier. If several players have similar names, copy the ID directly from the current output before issuing the restriction.
The console reports an error
- Check that the console was opened with
~. - Check the function spelling and capitalization:
TheNet:Kick,TheNet:Ban, orTheNet:BanForTime. - Check that the ID is inside quotation marks.
- For a timed ban, check that the seconds value follows a comma and is a number such as
120. - Verify administrator privileges and that the command is being entered on the active server.
The player can still rejoin
A successful kick permits an immediate rejoin by design. If you intended to prevent joining, use the hammer icon or TheNet:Ban instead. If you intended a temporary restriction, use TheNet:BanForTime and make sure the seconds value is longer than the time needed to resolve the incident.

A file-based ban does not take effect
- Confirm the server was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Confirm the file is named exactly
blocklist.txt. - Confirm the KU ID is on its own line and matches the output from
c_listallplayers(). - Confirm that
/config/<cluster-name>/belongs to the cluster the service actually starts. - Check whether a control panel exposes a separate active configuration path.
Practical administration checklist
Use this short sequence when moderating an incident:
- Confirm you are an administrator.
- Decide whether the problem calls for removal, a timed restriction, or a permanent restriction.
- Use TAB when speed matters and the correct player is clearly visible.
- Use
c_listallplayers()and a KU-ID command when identity precision matters. - Use
blocklist.txtwhen the restriction must remain after restarts on a managed dedicated server. - Record the KU ID and the action taken in your moderation notes, without relying solely on a display name.
- For an unban from the file-based route, remove the complete KU ID line and restart the active cluster.
Examples for common situations
A disruptive player who may return
Open the TAB list, select the player, and click the shoe icon. The player is removed but can reconnect immediately. This avoids imposing a longer restriction when a single removal is enough.
A player who should be barred for two minutes
Find the KU ID with c_listallplayers(), then run TheNet:BanForTime("KU_PLAYER_ID", 120). The number is seconds, so 120 represents two minutes.
A repeat offender who must not reconnect
After verifying the KU ID, use TheNet:Ban("KU_PLAYER_ID") or the hammer icon. If you administer a dedicated server and need the block to remain in a file across restarts, place that KU ID on its own line in the active cluster’s blocklist.txt, then restart.
Bottom line
Use TAB for the quickest in-game action, the console for exact KU-ID targeting, and blocklist.txt for a persistent file-based restriction. The key safeguards are administrator access, copying the correct KU ID, matching the command to the intended duration, and editing the cluster that the server actually runs.
