Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse cover the moment an Assaultron begins charging its head laser. During the charge, its head armor plates retract, creating a chance to cripple the head and disable the laser. If you cannot do that quickly, target its legs to slow its advance, keep moving, and attack from cover. Stay alert after causing heavy damage: a damaged Assaultron may start a localized self-destruct attack.
Why Assaultrons are dangerous
In Fallout 4, an Assaultron threatens you at both close and long range. It can rush into melee, then use a powerful head laser from a distance. The Fallout Wiki’s loading-screen quotation describes it as “fast and deadly at close range” and says it employs “a devastating laser at a distance”; the same description notes that some units use stealth technology. Fallout Wiki: Assaultron
How to avoid the head laser
- Watch for the charge. Treat the visible laser charge-up as your cue to move behind cover, not as time to remain exposed.
- Attack the head if you have a clear shot. The armor plates retract while the Assaultron prepares to fire. Use that opening to damage the head; crippling it disables the laser, according to the Fallout Wiki’s mechanics summary. Fallout Wiki: Assaultron
- Keep attacking from safety. Take shots when you have a safe opening, then return to cover rather than trading fire with the beam. Twinfinite’s guide also warns players about the eye beam. Twinfinite: Fallout 4 Assaultron guide
When to target the legs instead
If the head is hard to hit or you need more time to create distance, attack the legs. Crippling them slows the Assaultron, but it does not kill or fully disable it: the robot can crawl toward you. Keep your distance and continue attacking rather than assuming a leg cripple makes it harmless. Fallout Wiki: Assaultron
What to do when it is badly damaged
Significant damage can trigger a localized self-destruct sequence. If the Assaultron starts that attack, finish it before the sequence completes if you can do so safely; otherwise, move clear of the blast area. A crippled enemy may still be dangerous.

How to fight an Assaultron Dominator
A Dominator can use a stealth field, making it difficult to track and unavailable for V.A.T.S. targeting while cloaked. Be ready for it to reveal itself at close range, and use that moment to attack. The Fallout Wiki says crippling its torso permanently disables its stealth ability; this does not itself guarantee a quick kill. Fallout Wiki: Assaultron

There is no established universally best weapon or build for this fight: the available sources do not compare weapons by player level, difficulty, or character build. Use the strongest dependable weapon you have, prioritize cover, and take advantage of the exposed head during its laser charge. That is a practical approach based on the described attack pattern, not a tested loadout ranking.
