Rose strikes as she arrives. A grapple by itself does not count. You must land the timed follow-up attack, and you need 10 qualifying kills for the Holy Cross Work of Mercy.
What counts as a whip attack
The required move is a grapple attack rather than a normal standing whip swing. The Holy Whip serves two purposes: it lets Rose traverse the level and it pulls her toward enemies or environmental hooks. When you attack during the final part of a grapple, Rose performs an offensive follow-up as she reaches the enemy. That impact is the action credited toward the Work of Mercy.

Simply latching onto an enemy, pulling yourself across a room, or striking with an ordinary ground-based attack will not complete the objective. Watch for the attack animation and the enemy’s defeat before moving on.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step-by-step: perform the grapple attack
- Choose a target. Face an enemy and aim the whip grapple at it. Start with a target that moves little and is standing away from spikes, pits, or other hazards.
- Trigger the whip. Fire the grapple. Rose will begin pulling herself toward the enemy.
- Press normal attack before contact. Use the standard attack input immediately before the whip connects. The timing window is short; pressing during the pull is the important part, not after Rose has already arrived.
- Confirm the hit. The attack should occur as Rose reaches the target. Make sure the enemy actually dies, since a hit that leaves it alive is not a kill for the objective.
- Repeat until the counter reaches 10. Continue using the same grapple-then-attack sequence until the Holy Cross Work of Mercy records all 10 defeats.
Controls on PC and consoles
The cited PC control reference lists right mouse button for Arcane Whip and left mouse button for standard Attack. Use the right mouse button to start the grapple, then tap the left mouse button just before the whip reaches the enemy.

Why the timing works
The whip is built as a combined traversal and combat tool. A review by GamesRadar describes using the Holy Whip to swing between hooks, grapple enemies, and pull away from spikes. The attack input turns that movement into an offensive arrival. Because Rose is already being pulled toward the target, the successful input is just before contact, not a conventional attack started while standing still.

- Environment Hazards That Will make you grit your teeth - Biomes are packed with secrets, traps and puzzles. It is not just about muscles, it's about brains too!
Your equipped weapon can change the impact animation and effect. The timing remains a grapple follow-up, but the visual result may differ depending on what Rose has equipped. Judge success by the enemy’s defeat and the objective counter, not only by the animation.
How to practice safely
- Use predictable enemies. Mostly stationary or slow-moving targets keep the grapple distance consistent and make the attack window easier to learn.
- Clear hazards first. Practice in a room with space to recover if the grapple misses. Spikes and pits can punish a mistimed pull before you get another attempt.
- Press earlier than feels natural. If late inputs consistently miss, tap Attack slightly earlier during the pull. The game must receive the command before the whip connects.
- Leave recovery room. Do not practice with Rose positioned so a failed grapple carries her directly into a hazard or an unreachable ledge.
- Verify the kill each time. A successful latch or a nonlethal hit is not enough. Wait for the enemy to be defeated and check whether the counter advances.
Troubleshooting missed or uncounted kills
The grapple connects, but no attack happens
You probably pressed Attack after the connection or did not press it during the pull. Start the grapple again and press the normal attack input just before the whip reaches the enemy.

The attack lands, but the enemy survives
The Work of Mercy requires defeats, not merely damage. Choose a weaker target, use the weapon that gives you a reliable finishing blow, or repeat the sequence on the same type of enemy when it can be safely finished.
The counter does not move
Check that Rose used the grapple follow-up rather than a standing swing, and confirm that the target died from that attack. If the animation is unclear, use a slower enemy in an open room and watch the counter immediately after the defeat.

The grapple misses or sends Rose into danger
Reposition before firing. Targets that move unpredictably or stand beside spikes make the short timing window harder to read. Practice in a low-risk room, then return to moving enemies once the input rhythm is familiar.

Choosing targets for the 10-kill requirement
No authoritative source identifies one universally best farming room. Select a location using four practical criteria:
Best Value
- LIMITED EDITION: Official Limited Run Games release #251 of the Castlevania Dominus Collection featuring Order of Ecclesia cover art for Nintendo Switch
- GAME FORMAT: Physical DVD-ROM release, not a digital download, packaged in standard Nintendo Switch game case
- CONTENT: Action-packed collection of classic Castlevania games, rated T for Teen by ESRB
- PACKAGING DIMENSIONS: Comes in standard Switch case measuring 6 inches high, 3 inches wide, and 2 inches deep
- REGION AND LANGUAGE: US release with English language support, compatible with Nintendo Switch systems
- Movement predictability: stationary or patterned enemies are easier to grapple consistently.
- Distance from hazards: open floor gives you time to recover from a missed input.
- Room reset behavior: a room that repopulates enemies conveniently can reduce travel between attempts.
- Recovery after failure: prefer rooms where a missed grapple does not force a difficult jump or cost substantial health.
Once you find a safe target, repeat the exact sequence—aim, grapple, press Attack just before contact—until the game records 10 enemy defeats. The requirement reported by NoobFeed in 2026 is specifically 10 enemies defeated with whip attacks for the Holy Cross Work of Mercy.
