Press Windows key + number to launch or switch to the app pinned in that numbered taskbar position. The first pinned app uses Windows + 1, the second uses Windows + 2, and so on through the tenth position, which uses Windows + 0. For window-specific control, use Windows + Shift + number to start a new instance or Windows + Ctrl + number to switch to that app’s last active window.
The shortcut follows the taskbar’s current left-to-right pin order, not the order in which programs were installed. Moving, pinning, or unpinning an icon changes the mapping immediately.

How Windows-number shortcuts map to the taskbar
Windows assigns shortcut positions to pinned taskbar icons from left to right. Position one is addressed with Windows + 1; position two with Windows + 2. The sequence continues through position nine, while position ten is addressed with Windows + 0.
These are positional shortcuts. They do not identify an application by its name, executable file, category, or installation date. If a browser occupies the fourth pinned position today, Windows + 4 targets it. If you drag that icon to the first position tomorrow, Windows + 1 targets it instead.

The documented shortcut set
| Shortcut | Taskbar position | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Windows + 1 | First pinned icon | Opens or switches to the app in position 1 |
| Windows + 2 | Second pinned icon | Opens or switches to the app in position 2 |
| Windows + 3 | Third pinned icon | Opens or switches to the app in position 3 |
| Windows + 4 | Fourth pinned icon | Opens or switches to the app in position 4 |
| Windows + 5 | Fifth pinned icon | Opens or switches to the app in position 5 |
| Windows + 6 | Sixth pinned icon | Opens or switches to the app in position 6 |
| Windows + 7 | Seventh pinned icon | Opens or switches to the app in position 7 |
| Windows + 8 | Eighth pinned icon | Opens or switches to the app in position 8 |
| Windows + 9 | Ninth pinned icon | Opens or switches to the app in position 9 |
| Windows + 0 | Tenth pinned icon | Opens or switches to the app in position 10 |
The number row is the practical reference for this sequence: the first nine positions use 1 through 9, and the tenth uses 0. The documented set contains ten positions. A taskbar may show more than ten pinned programs, but those later icons do not receive another Windows-number position in this shortcut set.
Set up a reliable shortcut layout
The shortcut is only as predictable as the taskbar arrangement behind it. Set the layout once, then avoid casual rearranging if you rely on muscle memory.
- Pin the program. Locate the program and use the taskbar’s pin command so its icon remains in the pinned area. A program that is merely running, but not pinned, is not a dependable target for a Windows-number position.
- Arrange the icons. Drag pinned icons into a deliberate left-to-right order. Put the programs you launch most often in the earliest positions, because those positions require the simplest number combinations and are easiest to remember.
- Count from the left. Starting with the first pinned icon, count each position. Include every pinned icon in the sequence; do not count only the programs you use for a particular task.
- Test each important position. Press the Windows key together with the position’s number and watch which program opens or becomes active. Testing catches an incorrect count before you need the shortcut during a time-sensitive task.
- Record the arrangement if others use the computer. A short note such as “1: browser, 2: chat, 3: capture tool” can prevent someone from dragging icons and silently changing your workflow.
Installing software can add a pinned icon, and pinning or unpinning any program shifts the positions that follow it. Recheck the count after those changes. The icon’s visual location is the source of truth; an old memorized number is not.
Choose the right Windows-number variation
The plain Windows-number chord is the normal launch-or-switch action. Windows also provides two variants when you need control over windows rather than just the application.
Open a new instance with Windows + Shift + number
Hold Windows and Shift, then press the number for the pinned position. This starts a new instance of the app in that position. Use it when an application is already open but you need a separate window for another document, project, session, or workspace.

For example, if a pinned editor is in position 3, Windows + Shift + 3 requests a new instance of that editor. The action is tied to the pinned position, so moving the editor later changes the required number.
Switch to the last active window with Windows + Ctrl + number
Hold Windows and Ctrl, then press the position number. This switches to the app’s last active window. It is useful when an application has multiple windows and you want to return to the one you used most recently rather than simply bringing the application to the foreground.
If the app is in position 5, Windows + Ctrl + 5 targets its last active window. As with the other variants, the number identifies the icon’s current position, not the application name.
Do not confuse “new instance” with “last active window”
- Windows + number: ordinary launch or switch behavior for the pinned app.
- Windows + Shift + number: asks for a new instance of that app.
- Windows + Ctrl + number: switches to the app’s last active window.
When deciding which chord to use, first decide whether you need the application, a fresh window, or a previously used window. That choice determines the modifier key.
What to do when you have more than ten pinned apps
The Windows-number set covers positions 1 through 0 only. If the program you need is farther to the right, pressing another number will not create an eleventh positional shortcut.

Navigate with Windows + T
Windows + T moves focus to the taskbar so you can navigate its icons with the keyboard. This is an alternative when the target is outside the ten documented number positions or when you do not remember its exact position. Continue through the taskbar until the target icon is focused, then activate it using the keyboard’s normal activation key.

Mouse selection remains a valid fallback for a later pinned icon. It is slower than a memorized chord, but it does not depend on remembering a number. Direct selection is also useful after someone has changed the pin order and you have not yet rebuilt your shortcut map.
Keep the first ten positions purposeful
If you routinely use more than ten programs, reserve the first ten positions for the programs that benefit most from instant keyboard access. Less frequently used utilities can remain pinned farther right and be reached with taskbar navigation or direct selection. This preserves stable shortcuts without requiring every pinned icon to have a number.
Troubleshoot a shortcut that opens the wrong program
An incorrect target usually means the mapping changed rather than that Windows selected an app at random. Check the physical arrangement before changing any settings.
- Look at the current pinned order. Count from the left again, including icons added since you last used the shortcut.
- Confirm the target is still pinned. If it was unpinned, its former position may now belong to another icon. Pin it again and place it where you want it.
- Check for a newly inserted icon. Adding one program near the beginning shifts every later position by one or more places.
- Check for a removed icon. Unpinning an earlier program pulls later icons toward the left, so their numbers decrease.
- Test the corrected position. Press the Windows-number chord again and verify the visible result before relying on it.
Do not identify a shortcut by the icon’s order in the Start menu or by the order in which windows appear on screen. Only the current left-to-right pinned taskbar order determines the number.

Troubleshoot a shortcut that does nothing
When the correct program is pinned and counted correctly but the chord is ignored, isolate the problem in stages.
Test the Windows key itself
Try another Windows shortcut. If several Windows-key combinations fail, the issue may be with the key, the keyboard connection, or a system-level setting rather than the taskbar mapping. Testing a different known Windows shortcut separates a general key problem from a single taskbar shortcut problem.
Check keyboard-remapping and macro utilities
Keyboard-remapping or macro software can intercept the Windows key or rewrite multi-key chords before Windows receives them. This is a troubleshooting inference, not a documented Windows-number failure mode, but it is a practical check when the mapping is correct and other keyboard input works. Temporarily disable the remap or macro, test the chord, and then restore only the mappings you need.
Verify the exact chord
- For a normal launch or switch, hold Windows and press the position number.
- For a new instance, hold Windows and Shift and press the number.
- For the last active window, hold Windows and Ctrl and press the number.
Accidentally using Shift or Ctrl changes the requested action. Conversely, omitting a modifier when you wanted a new instance produces the normal launch-or-switch behavior.

Use cases for a gaming and video-workflow setup
A fixed taskbar map is useful when you move repeatedly between a game, communication, recording, and reference tools. Assign the earliest positions to the programs you need during a session, then keep that order unchanged. A normal Windows-number chord brings a pinned program forward without reaching for the mouse.

When you need a separate window of a pinned tool, use the Shift variant rather than repeatedly activating the existing window. When several windows of the same tool are open, the Ctrl variant returns to that tool’s last active window. These distinctions reduce unnecessary window hunting, provided the pin order remains stable.
For a setup with more than ten pinned tools, use the first ten positions for high-frequency actions and leave occasional utilities beyond them. Windows + T or direct taskbar selection covers the remainder without sacrificing the predictable numbers reserved for core tasks.
Accessibility and speed trade-offs
Keyboard chords can be faster than moving a pointer to a taskbar icon, especially after the positions become familiar. Their predictability comes from a stable layout, not from the program’s name. If the layout changes often, mouse selection or Windows + T may be easier than relearning the numbers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor users who find multi-key combinations difficult, taskbar navigation offers an alternative path. A dedicated keyboard, remapping utility, or macro may also change how the chord is entered, so verify that the Windows key is passed through correctly before relying on custom input behavior.
The practical choice is therefore personal: use Windows-number chords when speed and repeatability matter, and use taskbar navigation or direct selection when visual confirmation and flexibility matter more.
A maintenance checklist for dependable hotkeys
- Keep the most important programs in positions 1 through 0.
- Write down the current order if the computer has multiple users.
- Recount after pinning, unpinning, installing, or rearranging software.
- Use Windows + Shift + number when you specifically need a new instance.
- Use Windows + Ctrl + number when you specifically need the last active window.
- Use Windows + T or direct selection for pinned icons beyond position 10.
- If a chord is ignored, test another Windows shortcut and inspect keyboard remapping or macro software.
Once the order is deliberate and stable, the taskbar becomes a numbered launch panel: one chord for ordinary access, Shift for a fresh instance, and Ctrl for the last active window.
