The fastest reliable progression in Phasmophobia comes from finishing more successful contracts, not merely selecting the highest multiplier. Correctly identify the ghost, complete quick optional objectives, collect the bone, record unique Chronicle media, and leave alive. Because the game ties money and experience together—Kinetic Games states that earning $100 also awards 100 XP—every dollar you preserve converts directly into progress. A lower difficulty completed consistently can therefore beat a harder setting that produces deaths, wrong guesses or lengthy resets.
How Phasmophobia rewards progress
Phasmophobia uses one progression economy for cash and experience. In Kinetic Games’ Moving Forwards | Development Preview #12 (July 26, 2023), the studio wrote: “Experience and money values are now tied, if you earn $100, you’ll also be earning 100xp.” The practical implication is simple: there is no separate XP-only trick. Activities that increase your contract payout also increase your XP payout by the same amount.

Your end-of-contract result is built from several reward sources:
- Ghost identification: Correctly naming the ghost is a direct source of money and XP.
- Optional objectives: Completed objectives add rewards. Their value was increased in the progression changes described by Kinetic Games.
- Bone collection: Finding and collecting the bone adds a reward. The 2023 progression notes moved the bone reward outside the contract reward multiplier, so the bone remains valuable even when a multiplier is applied.
- Chronicle media: Photos, videos and sounds can add further rewards. Unique captures pay more than duplicate captures, and Chronicle media rewards are included in the contract multiplier.
- Survival: A correct investigation only pays when you get out. A death, failed guess or abandoned run can erase the time and consumables invested in the contract.
Level requirements rise sharply near level 100, so the same routine that feels fast at low levels can become inefficient later. The answer is to improve your payout per completed minute while protecting your survival rate, rather than chasing a headline multiplier in isolation.

The core money-and-XP loop
Use this order on ordinary contracts. It minimizes wasted movement and keeps optional rewards from turning into a risky second investigation.
- Prepare a focused loadout. Bring the evidence tools you can use confidently, a Photo Camera, a Video Camera and, after unlocking it, a Sound Recorder. Add a survival item you know how to deploy. Avoid buying equipment you are unlikely to use on that contract; replacement costs reduce the value of a failed experiment.
- Locate the investigation area quickly. Use your starting tools to find the active room and establish where the ghost is operating. Do not spend several minutes forcing a difficult objective before you have a stable investigation routine.
- Identify the ghost accurately. Evidence and behavior both matter. A fast wrong guess is worse than a slower correct one because it sacrifices the identification reward and can force a full reset.
- Complete low-risk objectives while you have control. Choose objectives that fit the current setup and can be finished without a prolonged hunt sequence. If an objective demands repeated exposure to danger, compare its likely payout with the value of simply completing the contract and leaving.
- Collect the bone. Check the location methodically once you know the map route. Because the bone reward sits outside the reward multiplier, it is a dependable addition to both cash and XP.
- Capture unique Chronicle media. Photograph, record or film subjects that are not already represented in the journal. A first capture is marked Unique; repeated captures are Duplicates and pay less.
- Leave alive as soon as the expected value turns negative. A final risky objective is not profitable if it causes a death, a wrong identification or a long re-buy cycle. Your progress is measured over completed contracts, not over the theoretical payout of one perfect attempt.
This loop is an editorial efficiency recommendation based on the documented reward and multiplier systems. Kinetic Games has not published a universal time trial proving that one map, route or custom setting is permanently fastest.
Early levels: build a dependable foundation
Use Amateur or Intermediate while learning
Amateur and Intermediate provide lower multipliers, but they give new players time to learn evidence, ghost behavior and map navigation. The goal at this stage is a high completion rate. A contract that you identify correctly, finish with one or two safe objectives and survive will usually produce better progress per hour than a harder contract that ends in a death or a wrong guess.

Do not wait indefinitely for an event objective that requires a rare interaction. If the ghost identification is complete and a clean exit is available, that reliable payout can be the efficient choice. This is a time-management decision, not a claim that every objective has the same value; objective rewards are part of the documented progression system, but the available material does not provide a complete reward table for every objective.
Spend early cash on capability
Progression unlocks equipment, maps and higher difficulties as your level rises. Prioritize tools that let you gather evidence and capture Chronicle media consistently. Buying every item immediately can leave you unable to replace equipment after a failed run, so maintain a reserve large enough for the loadout you actually use.
Mid-game: add the bone and unique media to every run
Move up only when accuracy is stable
Professional and harder difficulties can raise the reward multiplier. Move up when you can identify ghosts quickly, navigate your regular maps without hesitation and survive hunts with your current equipment. If your success rate drops sharply, return to the highest setting you can complete consistently; the lower multiplier is often outweighed by faster, safer contracts.
Make Chronicle part of the route
Chronicle rewards are easiest to collect when you plan them before entering the building. Carry the Photo Camera and Video Camera, then add the Sound Recorder once it is unlocked. Capture a new subject or media type before filling slots with repeats. Duplicate entries still pay, but Kinetic Games states that they reward less money and experience.

Chronicle also adds a per-item equipment bonus: a Tier 2 camera or recorder adds $1 for each applicable media item, while a Tier 3 device adds $2. These are per-item bonuses, not a one-time contract payment. Higher-tier equipment therefore has the greatest effect on a run in which you capture several qualifying media items.
Use the smallest familiar route, not a supposedly universal best map
A compact or familiar location can reduce walking time, but only if you can identify the ghost there reliably. Official material does not name one map as the permanently fastest money farm. Your own completion time, evidence confidence and survival history are better decision data than a generic map ranking.
Chronicle media: how to maximize unique captures
Chronicle changed the value of photography and recording by distinguishing first-time entries from repeats. Kinetic Games’ Chronicle – Phasmophobia v0.13 (June 24, 2025) describes the system this way: “If the same piece of media is captured, it will receive a Duplicate mark and will reward less money and experience.”

A practical media checklist
- Before the contract, check which Chronicle categories in your journal still need Unique entries.
- Carry the appropriate recorder or camera and keep enough inventory space for the captures you intend to make.
- Capture a new subject or event first. A repeat may occupy a slot while producing the lower Duplicate reward.
- Use Tier 2 equipment for the $1 per-item bonus or Tier 3 equipment for the $2 per-item bonus when the extra equipment cost and risk are justified.
- Leave once your planned Unique captures, bone, identification and worthwhile objectives are complete.
Unique media is also tied to the perfect-investigation requirement. Kinetic Games’ 2024 Happy Holidays – Development Preview #18 states: “Filling the Media pages with all Unique items will be the new way to qualify for a perfect game!” A perfect-investigation attempt therefore requires more than the correct ghost: you must also fill the relevant media pages with Unique entries alongside the usual requirements.
Choosing a difficulty and multiplier
Higher difficulty can increase the payout multiplier, but the multiplier only helps when you finish the contract. Compare settings using five factors: reward multiplier, minutes per contract, survival probability, equipment cost and your ability to identify the ghost with the available clues.

Use an expected-value test
After several contracts, compare your average payout and completion time at each setting. A simple measure is:
Progress per hour = average money and XP from completed contracts ÷ average minutes spent, including failed attempts and re-buy time.

If a high multiplier setting gives one excellent payout but frequently ends in death, include those failed minutes in the average. Conversely, if you can complete a harder setting cleanly with a familiar route, its higher multiplier may be the correct upgrade. Treat no-evidence and extreme custom farms as advanced options, not as a requirement for ordinary progression.

Raise risk in small increments
Change one setting at a time when testing a custom contract. If you simultaneously remove evidence, increase hunt pressure and alter map conditions, you will not know which change caused failures. Keep a written record of identification accuracy, contract length, deaths and equipment lost; revert the last change when the results deteriorate.
Do not confuse a high multiplier with a high hourly rate
Custom contracts can produce the highest theoretical payout, but the official sources do not certify one permanent best configuration. Patch changes, your familiarity with ghost tells and your ability to survive under restricted clues all affect the result. A repeatable Professional run may be the better farm for one player, while an experienced player can profit from a custom low-evidence route.
Protect the exit
Once the ghost is identified and the bone and planned media are secured, reassess every remaining objective. If completing it requires another hunt cycle or a risky interaction, leave unless its expected reward clearly exceeds the value of starting a fresh contract.
Why common “fast XP” methods fail
Choosing difficulty by multiplier alone
The multiplier increases the value of eligible rewards, but it does not guarantee a faster run. Deaths, wrong guesses and resets consume time without producing the payout you expected. Measure completed contracts, not the best-case end screen.
Farming duplicate media
Chronicle records duplicates, but duplicate media pays less money and XP. Fill your journal with Unique entries first and avoid using all available slots on the same subject.
Ignoring the bone
The bone is easy to overlook while chasing objectives. Its reward was moved outside the reward multiplier, so collecting it remains worthwhile on high- and low-multiplier contracts alike.

Waiting for one difficult objective
An objective that requires repeated exposure to the ghost can consume more time than its payout justifies. Complete the identification and safe objectives, then leave when the marginal risk is too high.
Overcommitting after a good run
More objectives are not automatically more profitable. A late death can eliminate the value of earlier work and force another equipment purchase. Set a stop condition before the contract begins.

When should you Prestige?
Level 100 is the first Prestige decision point. Prestige is optional and is not a faster-money shortcut. It resets your money, level and equipment, while preserving map and difficulty unlocks. In return, you receive a new badge and title; reaching Prestige 10 also provides additional loadout slots.

There is no economic multiplier attached to Prestige in the documented progression notes. Make the choice for its cosmetic and loadout benefits, not because it increases the payout of the next contract.

Before leaving the truck
- Select the highest difficulty at which your recent completion rate remains strong.
- Check your Chronicle journal for missing Unique photo, video and sound entries.
- Bring the evidence tools, recording devices and survival item you can use confidently.
- Decide which optional objectives are acceptable and what condition will trigger an early exit.
During the investigation
- Find the active area and gather evidence before attempting risky objectives.
- Confirm the ghost rather than guessing from one unusual behavior.
- Capture Unique media while the building is safe enough to navigate.
- Collect the bone and complete quick objectives that fit your route.
- Leave when another attempt is more likely to cause a failure than add meaningful payout.
After the contract
- Check that the ghost identification, bone and intended objectives were credited.
- Review Chronicle entries and note which captures were Unique versus Duplicate.
- Track average money, XP, minutes, deaths and equipment replacement costs over several runs.
- Increase the difficulty or custom risk only when the data shows a better progress-per-hour result.

Does the bone reward receive the difficulty multiplier?
No. Kinetic Games’ 2023 progression notes specifically moved the bone reward outside the reward multiplier. It still adds money and XP, but it is not multiplied with the other eligible rewards.

No permanent universal farm is established by the official progression and Chronicle announcements. Map familiarity, ghost knowledge, survival rate and patch changes determine which route is fastest for an individual player.
