To survive longer in Risk of Rain 2, choose a difficulty that suits your current skill, avoid taking preventable hits, and use healing as recovery—not as permission to stand in danger. The game gets harder as a run goes on, so the goal is to balance safe play with steady progress.
Choose a difficulty that gives you room to learn
The starting difficulty affects how demanding a run feels and how quickly its time-based scaling rises. The Risk of Rain 2 Wiki’s difficulty reference describes three initial options:

These figures describe the listed difficulty modifiers, not a guaranteed run length or success rate. If you are struggling to learn what enemies do, Drizzle is a sensible place to practice. Move up when you want more pressure; choosing a harder setting does not by itself make a run more productive.

Keep moving, and avoid lingering in predictable attack areas. This is practical gameplay guidance rather than a quantified result: the available sources do not establish how much it extends a run. Pay attention to threats around you and make space when an attack or crowded encounter makes your current position unsafe.

Healing can come from passive regeneration, item effects, active items, and healing drones, according to the Risk of Rain 2 Wiki’s health reference. Those sources can help you recover, but they do not replace avoiding hits. Poison disables healing, and the reference reports that healing is halved for players at Eclipse 5 or above. If recovery is not working as expected, consider whether one of those conditions applies rather than assuming you simply need more healing.
Do not rely on a universal item build
There is no single item build established here as the best way to survive longer. The evidence does not compare builds, survivor matchups, or strategies in controlled runs, so a specific list of items would overstate what is known. Treat healing effects as one part of your run, and adjust your decisions to the threats and resources you actually encounter.

Check version-sensitive advice against your game
Game balance can change, so item-specific guidance may not remain accurate across versions or platforms. For example, 2K’s December 9, 2025 patch notes report that Solus Heart’s base health increased from 6000 to 7500 and its base damage increased from 10 to 11. Those are enemy balance changes, not a survival strategy; they illustrate why older item or encounter advice should be checked against the version you play.
The game’s 1.0 update notes also explain the developers’ approach to challenge: “Our goal is for players to be more engaged with the game – what we don’t want is for the game to be suddenly much easier.” The statement appears in the 1.0 update notes and is attributed to the update’s developer notes, not to a named individual.
