How to Live Stream a Prerecorded Video with AWS Elemental MediaLive

AWS’s documented workflow uses an MP4 in S3 as a MediaLive pull input, then sends HLS output to a delivery path. Here are the steps and key caveats.

To broadcast a prerecorded MP4 as a live-style stream with AWS Elemental MediaLive, the documented AWS example stores the file in Amazon S3, creates a MediaLive MP4 pull input for its S3 object, then sends the channel’s HLS output to an AWS Elemental MediaStore container. CloudFront can distribute that output to viewers. This is a 2021 AWS walkthrough, so confirm the current console labels, templates, service availability, and destinations before following it literally.

How the prerecorded-video workflow fits together

In AWS’s example, S3 stores the source MP4, MediaLive reads and processes it, and a MediaLive channel sends HLS output to MediaStore. CloudFront appears in the delivery architecture; the walkthrough also describes social-channel output as an option. MediaStore is part of that specific example, not a universal requirement for every MediaLive workflow.

This produces a live-style channel experience from a file; it is not the same as publishing a video for viewers to start on demand. AWS describes MediaLive more broadly as a processing step between upstream sources and downstream systems, with MediaPackage among the possible origin and packaging services.

What you need before configuring MediaLive

  • A prerecorded MP4 uploaded to an Amazon S3 bucket.
  • An IAM role for the MediaLive channel, as required by the AWS walkthrough.
  • An intended output and delivery path. The cited example uses a MediaStore container and CloudFront.

The walkthrough’s example MP4 input URL is s3ssl://YOUR_INPUT_BUCKET_NAME/CONTENT_OBJECT_KEY.mp4. It documents an S3-backed MP4 pull input; do not treat that older example as confirmation that every field or setting remains unchanged in the current console.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up the AWS example

  1. Upload the source. Create or choose an S3 bucket and upload the prerecorded MP4. Keep track of the bucket name and object key because the input URL refers to both.
  2. Prepare delivery. The walkthrough creates an AWS Elemental MediaStore container and a CloudFront distribution for delivery. These are the origin and distribution components in that example.
  3. Create the MediaLive input. In MediaLive, create an MP4 pull input that points to the S3 object using the documented s3ssl:// URL pattern. Select the IAM role needed by the channel.
  4. Create and configure a channel. The 2021 walkthrough uses a “Live Event–HLS” template example and a SINGLE_PIPELINE channel, configures an HLS destination, and attaches the MP4 input. Treat those names and choices as historical example details, not guaranteed current defaults.
  5. Start the channel and verify delivery. Start the configured channel, then check that the HLS output reaches the selected destination and that the intended playback path works. Consult the current AWS console and service documentation for fields or choices that differ from the walkthrough.

Choose live-style output or on-demand playback

Use a live-style workflow when viewers are meant to tune in to a stream at a particular time or experience a linear channel. If viewers should be able to start the video whenever they choose, AWS’s MediaPackage VOD getting-started workflow is a different fit: it starts with file-based content in S3, uses a packaging group and configuration, and creates an asset with playback endpoints. AWS defines an asset resource as the mechanism MediaPackage uses to ingest, package, and serve VOD content.

MediaPackage is not a mandatory component of the MediaStore-based MediaLive example. AWS also documents a live-to-VOD workflow that ingests live HLS from an encoder such as MediaLive and extracts a VOD asset; AWS says MediaPackage is not required to deliver the resulting asset. MediaPackage v2’s documented HLS and CMAF input support concerns MediaPackage live ingest, not the MediaLive MP4 pull input in the older walkthrough.

Costs and limits of the published example

The AWS blog’s 2021 example gives historical figures of $1.63 per hour without its Twitch setup and $2.05 per hour with that setup, for the AWS Ireland Region. It excludes view-based CloudFront data-transfer-out charges. These are not current AWS prices or a complete estimate. Your actual costs depend on the current regional rates and the services, channel runtime, packaging or origin, and viewer delivery you use; verify current pricing before deployment.

The detailed walkthrough was published July 27, 2021. AWS’s broader MediaLive guide explains upstream and downstream roles, but the available documentation does not establish exact present-day settings for this prerecorded-file setup. Check current AWS documentation for regional availability, console fields, templates, and supported destinations.
