To restart an already-working FFmpeg YouTube stream automatically after a Raspberry Pi reboots, run its command from a systemd service. Save the command and stream key securely, make the service wait for network startup, enable it, and then verify both the local FFmpeg process and the live preview in YouTube Studio. A service marked active does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a picture.
Before you create the service
This setup assumes your FFmpeg command already produces a working YouTube stream when you run it manually. Keep that command’s input, encoding options, and YouTube ingest URL; the main change is to run it through systemd at boot. The unit below is a pattern to adapt, not a universal configuration. Confirm your FFmpeg binary path, input readiness, service user, and key-handling approach for your Pi.
Use a dedicated, non-root account where practical, and make sure it can read the stream input and execute FFmpeg. Find the binary path with command -v ffmpeg. Use absolute paths in the service. If the stream reads a file or uses a wrapper script, confirm the service user has access and set an appropriate working directory.
Store the YouTube stream key securely
Avoid putting a stream key in a publicly shared script or a command that may be saved in shell history. Create an environment file readable only by root and the service group. For example, if your service will run as user pi and group pi:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
sudo install -o root -g pi -m 0640 /dev/null /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
sudo nano /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
Put the key in the file using the variable name your FFmpeg command will use:
YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY=replace_with_your_stream_key
Save the file and do not include the key in the unit’s ExecStart line. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who can read it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-stream settings.
Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg
Create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service:
sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service
Use a unit like this, replacing the user, group, paths, input, and FFmpeg arguments to match your working setup:

The example command is only illustrative. Preserve the command and options that you have already verified manually. The ingest URL and stream key syntax depend on your YouTube setup; if your command takes the key in a different form, adapt it without exposing the key in a world-readable file. Confirm how your shell or FFmpeg command expands environment variables: systemd does not run ExecStart through a shell by default, so shell-style constructs such as $YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY may not behave as they would in an interactive shell. One option is a carefully permissioned wrapper script that reads the environment and invokes FFmpeg; ensure the script itself is executable and does not disclose the key.

Wants=network-online.target requests the network-online target, and After=network-online.target orders this service after it. These directives do not guarantee working DNS, routing, internet access, or a reachable YouTube ingest server. Network-online behavior also depends on the system’s network manager and wait-online service.
What the restart settings do
Restart=always asks systemd to start the service again after the process exits, with a 10-second delay here. Choose a policy and delay deliberately. A restart policy can help after FFmpeg exits, but it cannot fix a wrong key, unavailable input, invalid command, YouTube broadcast configuration, or a process that remains running while its connection is stuck. It can also create repeated restart attempts if a persistent configuration error makes FFmpeg exit immediately.

-
Reboot the Pi:
sudo reboot. -
After it comes back, check the unit:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. Confirm whether it is active and review any recent errors. -
Inspect the service journal:

Open YouTube Studio and check the relevant live control room or broadcast preview. Confirm that the expected picture and audio arrive and that the broadcast is actually live as intended.
The systemd status reports the local process state. FFmpeg logging output and YouTube Studio’s preview provide separate evidence about the stream reaching YouTube; neither should be inferred from the other.

| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| Service fails with an execution error, including status 203/EXEC | Check that ExecStart points to the real FFmpeg binary or an executable wrapper, that the path is absolute, and that the service user can execute it. For a wrapper, verify its interpreter line and executable permission. |
| FFmpeg cannot open the input | Check the input path, device or mount availability at boot, working directory, and read permissions for the configured service user. A camera or other source may not be ready when the service starts; systemd ordering alone does not make the source ready. |
| Environment file or key is not available to FFmpeg | Check the exact EnvironmentFile path and permissions, and ensure the service account can receive the setting. Verify the command or wrapper actually expands the variable; ExecStart is not a shell command line by default. Avoid printing the key in logs while debugging. |
| It starts before the Pi has working internet | Confirm the system’s network manager provides a functioning wait-online mechanism, and inspect the journal for DNS, route, or connection errors. network-online.target is an ordering aid, not a connectivity test. |
| Systemd says active, but YouTube shows no picture | Review FFmpeg’s journal output for connection, input, or encoding errors, then inspect the YouTube Studio preview and broadcast state. A running or hung process can still fail to deliver a healthy picture; restarting it is not a substitute for finding the cause. |
| It repeatedly restarts without recovering | Read the journal across several attempts. Fix persistent command, key, permission, input, or broadcast problems rather than relying on Restart=always. If FFmpeg stays alive while the connection is unusable, systemd may have no process exit to trigger a restart. |
| The problem persists after rebooting the Pi | Look beyond systemd. Check the camera or source device, its connection and readiness, and the YouTube broadcast itself. A Raspberry Pi forum camera report illustrates that rebooting the Pi does not necessarily clear a fault in the source or stream condition (Raspberry Pi Forums discussion). |
Do not treat FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags as a universal YouTube fix
FFmpeg’s documented reconnect options address HTTP protocol behavior. YouTube streaming commonly uses an ingest protocol such as RTMP, so those HTTP-specific flags should not be presented as a universal switch for recovering a YouTube stream. Check the protocol and the exact failure before choosing reconnect options; see the FFmpeg protocols documentation.
For a more involved arrangement, validate the account, source, ingest, and visible stream before enabling automatic startup. The YouTube-AutoEncoder project illustrates a more deliberate setup with a dedicated account and private configuration, rather than enabling a new stream before its pieces are checked.
