You can livestream from a Chromebook straight through YouTube Studio—no desktop encoder required for a basic webcam broadcast. Enable live streaming on your channel ahead of time, then open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Webcam, choose your camera and microphone, set the stream details and privacy, and click Go live.
Before you start: check channel access and age rules
First-time YouTube live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before an event. Sign in to the channel you intend to use and confirm that live streaming is available. YouTube’s webcam guidance currently says streamers must be at least 16; users aged 13–17 have a private default privacy setting, although the stream’s privacy can be changed. Go live directly from YouTube Studio
- Prepare the Chromebook. Update ChromeOS and Chrome, connect to the intended Wi-Fi or wired network, and sign in to the correct YouTube account. YouTube’s webcam help page documents Chrome 60 or later as compatible. YouTube: Create a live stream via webcam
- Open the webcam workflow. In YouTube Studio select Create → Go Live → Webcam.
- Enter stream details. Add a title and description, choose the privacy setting, and select the camera and microphone you want to use.
- Allow device access. If Chrome asks, grant camera and microphone permissions. Check the framing and audio input before starting.
- Start the broadcast. Select Go live. When finished, use YouTube’s End stream control. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube webcam instructions
Share a screen, window, or browser tab
YouTube’s Live Control Room can share an entire screen, a window, or a browser tab after a webcam stream begins. For this workflow, connect a webcam and microphone; screen sharing is not a substitute for those devices. Start the webcam broadcast, choose Share screen, then select the specific screen, window, or tab to present. Guests, overlays, and browser production controls
A browser studio such as StreamYard is an option when you need a produced layout or guest workflow. StreamYard documents Chromebook use and recommends Chrome. It recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download and Ethernet where possible; those are StreamYard recommendations, not YouTube minimums or a guarantee that every Chromebook and connection will perform well. Headphones can help reduce echo with remote guests.
Advanced encoder productions
YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for setups such as gameplay or screen capture and external audio/video equipment. It requires encoder software and YouTube’s server URL and stream key. OBS’s published system requirements list Windows, macOS, and Linux/Unix, not ChromeOS, so do not assume OBS has a standard supported Chromebook installation. Camera, microphone, and connection checks
- Built-in devices: Start with the Chromebook’s camera and microphone if they give you an acceptable picture and sound. External gear is optional for YouTube’s browser webcam route.
- USB webcam: If buying one, verify that the manufacturer explicitly supports ChromeOS and that the connection fits your Chromebook. Google’s ChromeOS Compatible Webcam Specification v2.0 requires UVC (USB Video Class) 1.0 or later and streaming at 1280×720, 30 fps, in MJPEG. - Audio: An external microphone or headset is an optional upgrade when the built-in mic is the weak link. For guest sessions, headphones can help prevent echo.
- Internet: Prefer a stable connection. For its own browser studio, StreamYard recommends 5 Mbps upload and download and Ethernet when possible; Wi-Fi may work but can be less reliable. Treat that as service guidance, not a universal YouTube bitrate requirement. StreamYard requirements
Rehearse and protect the broadcast
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal if appropriate. Confirm the stream’s privacy setting before making it public.
- Check camera framing, microphone selection, volume, and any screen or tab you plan to present.
- Use only video, music, and other material you have the rights to broadcast. A live format does not grant permission to use copyrighted material; review YouTube’s current policies and the rights for every included asset.
- After the event, end the stream from YouTube’s controls. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube’s webcam help.
Common Chromebook livestream problems
- Go Live is unavailable: The channel may not have live access enabled yet, or first-time activation may still be processing. Enable streaming in advance; activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm you are signed into the intended channel. YouTube activation guidance
- Camera or microphone is missing: Check Chrome’s permission prompt and the selected devices in the webcam setup. Reconnect an external USB device and confirm its ChromeOS compatibility.
- Screen sharing is unavailable: Start the webcam stream and connect a webcam and microphone; YouTube’s screen-sharing workflow depends on them.
- Guests hear echo: Use headphones and check that speakers are not feeding sound back into the microphone.
- Video or audio drops: Check connection stability. If using StreamYard, its guidance recommends at least 5 Mbps in both directions and Ethernet where possible; this recommendation does not guarantee a stable broadcast on a particular setup.
- You expected OBS to install like a desktop app: OBS’s published supported operating systems do not include ChromeOS. Use YouTube’s webcam route or a browser studio rather than relying on an unsupported Chromebook workaround.
