For a static live-stream overlay that needs transparent areas, use PNG. For a photo background without transparency, JPEG is often a practical choice; for logos, text, screenshots, and other sharp graphics, choose a lossless format such as PNG. Animated transparent overlays are a separate case: Elgato recommends WEBM for its OBS overlay workflow, but check that your streaming software supports it.
Choose a format for the asset you are adding

PNG versus WebP for a stream overlay
Both formats can support transparency, but that does not mean every streaming application accepts both for every kind of source. PNG is the safer default for a static transparent overlay when following the streaming-specific OBS guidance cited by Elgato. WebP is worth considering when smaller files matter and your exact software workflow supports it. Test the file in the scene before relying on it during a live broadcast.
For a static graphic, consider whether you need transparency and whether the image contains sharp edges or photographic detail. For animation, check the application’s supported playback workflow rather than assuming a still-image format will behave as an animated overlay.
Keep image formats separate from live-video settings
A PNG overlay or JPEG background is a scene asset. It is not the codec or container used to encode and transmit the live audiovisual program. YouTube’s live-stream guidance treats video resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codecs, and delivery protocols as separate streaming decisions. Choosing PNG for a graphic does not set or change those video-stream parameters.

Size and fit the graphic without distorting it
File extension does not determine canvas dimensions or aspect ratio. OBS Project notes that 16:9 is common for major streaming platforms and gives 1920×1080, 1280×720, and 3840×2160 as 16:9 examples in its 2021 guidance. A vertical or square layout may suit a different scene or destination.
Keep the graphic’s proportions when placing it. OBS warns that stretching content to fit a mismatched canvas warps and distorts the source. Instead, scale it proportionally, crop it deliberately, or use a background to fill unused canvas space. Check the result in the actual scene, especially around text and edges.

Check the destination’s specific image rules
Format support and file limits can depend on the feature, not just the platform. Twitch Developers’ advice to “Avoid transparency in your PNG” concerns a discovery image for a Twitch extension; it is not a general instruction for scene overlays. Search-result guidance for Twitch channel-page images mentions JPEG, PNG, or GIF and a 10 MB maximum, but that limit should be verified on Twitch’s current page before use. OneStream Live’s surfaced Studio guidance lists PNG, JPEG/JPG, or WebP and says PNG transparency is supported; treat that as guidance for that product feature, not a universal compatibility guarantee.

- For a static overlay that needs transparent regions, start with PNG.
- For a photograph without transparency, JPEG is often suitable; for crisp text or edges, prefer lossless encoding.
- For animated transparency, confirm the application’s supported format and playback behavior; Elgato recommends WEBM for its OBS use case.
- Check the actual source type’s accepted formats and any file-size limit before preparing a batch of assets.
- Preserve aspect ratio when scaling, and inspect the asset in the scene for cropping, distortion, or unreadable text.
- Set video resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and encoding independently from the overlay image format.
