How to Livestream a Podcast Episode on YouTube with Streamlabs Desktop

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To livestream a podcast episode on YouTube with Streamlabs Desktop, connect your YouTube channel, add your microphone and any optional camera, set up the scene and stream details, then preview the broadcast before selecting Go Live. YouTube must be eligible for livestreaming, and its podcast feature is a separate playlist for full-length video episodes—not a way to publish an MP3 by itself.

Before you set up the livestream

  • Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. If this is your first livestream, verify the channel and allow time for YouTube setup before the planned episode. See YouTube’s livestream requirements.
  • Choose the format. A livestream is a video broadcast. You can use audio with a static visual or add a camera for a video-forward show; the right setup depends on the episode and your audience.
  • Gather compatible equipment. You need a working microphone for the hosts’ voices. A webcam is optional. Existing devices may be detected by Streamlabs Desktop; the official setup guidance does not require a particular model.

YouTube Help says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” Start with the devices you have, then check that Streamlabs can access them.

Set up Streamlabs Desktop and go live

  1. Connect YouTube

Open Streamlabs Desktop, sign in with the Google account for the intended YouTube channel, and select YouTube as the streaming platform when prompted. Follow the account authorization steps. Streamlabs’ Desktop getting-started guide covers platform selection, permissions, stream details, and confirming Go Live.

  2. Allow access to your devices

Grant camera and microphone permissions if your operating system prompts you. In the Streamlabs sources or audio settings, select the microphone you will use. Speak at a normal level and check that the input meter responds. If the show includes video, add or select the webcam and confirm its image appears.

  6. Start the episode and monitor it

When the preview is correct, select Go Live in Streamlabs Desktop and verify that the broadcast is live on YouTube. Keep an eye on audio and video quality during the show. If you use a scheduled event or another start flow in YouTube, follow the prompts shown for that event.

Make the livestream part of a YouTube podcast

A live broadcast and a YouTube podcast are related but distinct. YouTube Help states: “On YouTube, a podcast is a playlist, and podcast episodes are videos within that playlist.” Create or select the podcast in YouTube Studio, then organize full-length video episodes in its playlist. A completed eligible livestream recording can be handled as a video episode and added to the podcast playlist. An MP3 alone cannot be made into a YouTube podcast episode in Studio. See Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.

Use RSS for an audio-first back catalog

If your episodes are audio-first recordings rather than livestreams, RSS delivery may be an alternative where the feature is available. In supported countries and regions, YouTube can create static-image videos from selected RSS episodes and automatically upload new feed episodes. Check upload visibility and copyright or monetization status as part of setup. RSS-uploaded audio does not automatically update after publication; uploading a replacement creates a new video and makes the old one private. Details and availability are in YouTube’s RSS delivery help.

YouTube’s RSS instructions say podcast content uploaded by RSS cannot contain advertisements. Host-read promotions, sponsorships, and endorsements must be disclosed using the branded-content setting and follow applicable policies. That RSS-specific restriction should not be assumed to describe every livestream format.

Prepare a concise preflight checklist

  • The YouTube channel is verified and eligible to livestream.
  • Streamlabs Desktop is connected to the correct channel.
  • The intended microphone is selected, unmuted, and registering audio.
  • The optional camera is framed correctly, and the scene shows the intended sources.
  • The episode title, visibility, audience, and event details are correct.
  • The YouTube preview shows the expected picture and audio before the public show.
  • You have checked copyright and permissions for music, clips, images, and other material used in the episode.

Common problems and fixes

  • You cannot start a livestream: check channel verification and whether the channel has a livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. Allow time for first-time setup.
  • No microphone audio appears: confirm operating-system permissions, select the intended input in Streamlabs, unmute it, and check that its input meter responds.
  • The camera is missing: grant camera permission, confirm the intended device is selected, and check that another application is not preventing access.
  • The YouTube preview is wrong or absent: verify the correct channel and event are connected, review the selected scene and sources, and run a test stream before the episode.
  • The recording is not in the podcast playlist: add the completed video to the podcast playlist in YouTube Studio. Podcast organization is a separate step from going live.
  • An RSS episode does not reflect an edit: RSS-uploaded audio does not update automatically after publication. A replacement upload becomes a new video, while the old one becomes private.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the episode is a prerecorded video you want to keep looping as a YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is a different workflow from broadcasting a live conversation through Streamlabs Desktop. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
