To lockpick in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, move the pick until its cursor grows and turns gold, then rotate the lock while guiding the pick to follow that moving sweet spot. Make small, smooth adjustments. If the cursor turns grey or shakes heavily, release and reposition rather than forcing the lock.
How the lockpicking minigame works
Lockpicking has two parts: placing the pick at the lock’s sweet spot and keeping it there as you turn the cylinder. The enlarged gold cursor is the clearest cue that you have found the useful position. Once the lock starts turning, the sweet spot moves, so guide the pick along with it through the rotation.
- Check that Henry has a lockpick and that the lock is within his current ability.
- Move the pick around the cylinder until the cursor grows and turns gold.
- Use the rotation control shown on screen to begin turning the lock.
- Move the pick in a smooth arc to track the gold sweet spot, making small corrections as it shifts.
- If the cursor goes grey or starts shaking heavily, release the controls and reposition before trying again.
Sound or controller vibration may offer additional feedback, but use the gold cursor as your main guide. Smooth movement matters more than trying to rush through the turn.

Do not rely on a universal shoulder-button or trigger label: the displayed prompt may differ by platform, control preset, or version. Check the live prompt when the minigame opens. Neither input method is established as objectively better; use the one that lets you make the most controlled adjustments.

What to check when a lockpick breaks or a turn fails
- The lock is beyond Henry’s ability: Check its difficulty label and Henry’s Thievery skill. The game may prevent an attempt if he is not ready for that lock.
- You cannot find the sweet spot: Move the pick around the cylinder until the cursor grows and turns gold before you start turning.
- The pick leaves the sweet spot during rotation: Reduce the size of your corrections and follow the moving gold cursor through the turn.
- The cursor turns grey or shakes heavily: Release, reposition the pick, and try again instead of forcing the rotation.
- The minigame will not start: Check that a lockpick is in Henry’s inventory.
Build Thievery and practice on manageable locks
Thievery governs lockpicking, and successful lockpicking and pickpocketing can help advance it. Begin with locks the game indicates Henry can handle, then work up as the skill improves. Before spending points on a perk, read its current in-game description: published guides disagree on the exact effect of Tool Master, so a numerical durability bonus or broken-pick recovery should not be assumed.

The guide also identifies an easy practice chest at Lower Semine Mill. These are reported routes, not guaranteed stock or access in every save; check availability as your quests and progress change.

Remember that opening a lock can still be a crime
Winning the minigame only opens the lock; it does not make entering or taking anything lawful. Trespassing, theft, ownership, and witnesses are separate concerns, and getting caught can bring punishment. Practice on an appropriate target and pay attention to nearby NPCs before attempting a lock.
