You do not need the root password for normal Virtualmin administration. Sign in at https://your-hostname:10000 (or https://your-ip:10000) with an existing Unix account that has sudo privileges. Use that account’s system password; an SSH key by itself is not a Virtualmin panel password.

If the sudo-capable account has no password, connect over SSH and run sudo passwd <username>. Set a root password only when you specifically need to authenticate as root, with sudo passwd root. Virtualmin also supports generated login links for domain owners and Usermin users.

What you need before opening Virtualmin
Virtualmin’s administrative interface is normally reached through Webmin over HTTPS on TCP port 10000. Have the server’s hostname or IP address and the name of a Unix account that can use sudo. The account does not have to be named root.
- Server address: a resolvable hostname is preferred; an IP address also works.
- Panel address:
https://your-hostname:10000orhttps://your-ip:10000. - Login name: the existing sudo-capable Unix username.
- Password: that Unix account’s password. An SSH private key does not automatically create a panel password.
- Privilege: the account must be permitted to use
sudofor the administration you intend to perform.
Being able to run sudo or sudo su - over SSH proves that the account can escalate privileges. It does not prove that a root password exists, nor does it make the SSH key itself acceptable in the browser login form.

Log in with a sudo-capable Unix account
- Identify the server address. Use the hostname supplied by your hosting or server setup, or the server’s IP address.
- Open the panel. In a browser, go to
https://your-hostname:10000. If DNS or the TLS certificate is not ready, tryhttps://your-ip:10000. Browsers may warn that a certificate does not match an IP address. - Enter the Unix username. Type the sudo-capable account, not necessarily
root. - Enter its Unix password. Use the password assigned to that account on the server. Do not paste an SSH private key into the password field.
- Complete the login. After authentication, Virtualmin/Webmin applies the privileges associated with that account.
Virtualmin’s installation guidance explicitly states that, in most cases, administrators can log in with a sudo-capable user instead of root. This is the normal path on many cloud images and Ubuntu-style installations, where the initial account is created for SSH-key access and root password authentication is disabled or unset.
If the sudo user has no password
SSH-key access and browser authentication are separate credentials. If the account was created for key-only SSH access, assign it a Unix password from an SSH session where sudo already works.

- Run the command below, replacing
<username>with the account you will use in Virtualmin:sudo passwd <username> - Enter the new password when prompted, then confirm it.
- Return to the panel at
https://your-hostname:10000and log in with that username and new password.
The command changes the Unix account’s password; it does not change the SSH key and does not set a root password. Keep the password in a password manager and use a separate named administrator account for each person who needs access.
When you really need a root password
Do not set a root password merely because the root account has no password. A sudo-capable account is sufficient for ordinary Virtualmin administration. Set one only when a workflow specifically requires root authentication or when you have a controlled reason to permit direct root login.
- Connect over SSH with an account that can use
sudo. - Run:
sudo passwd root - Choose and confirm the new root password.
- At the panel, use the username
rootand that password if direct root authentication is required.
A successful sudo su - session does not indicate that a root password was previously configured. It only shows that the current account can obtain a root shell through the sudo policy.

Choose the right access method

A regular mailbox or FTP user is generally not a substitute for an administrator in the full Virtualmin interface. Use Usermin for those users unless the account has been deliberately granted the required Webmin privileges.

Virtualmin provides the create-login-link command when you need to give a domain owner or Usermin user access without asking that person to type a password. Run it from a shell with the necessary Virtualmin privileges.
Domain owner link
virtualmin create-login-link --domain nameReplace name with the virtual server’s domain name. The command returns a URL that can be used to log in as that domain owner without entering a password.
Usermin mailbox link
virtualmin create-login-link --user nameUse the user form when the account is managed as a regular Virtualmin user.
Explicit Usermin-user link
virtualmin create-login-link --usermin-user nameThis form targets a Usermin mailbox user. Choose it when the recipient needs Usermin rather than the domain-owner interface.

Root login links
The command also has a --root option for a root login link. A root link is not necessary for ordinary administration; use the sudo-capable administrator method unless a root-specific workflow requires otherwise.
Handle every generated URL like a password. Send it only to the intended recipient, avoid posting it in tickets or public chat, and do not place it in a document that broader staff can read. Anyone who possesses the link may be able to enter the associated account without typing its password.
Enable the correct Webmin access for a domain owner
A domain owner may have a valid virtual-server account but still be unable to reach the panel. Non-root domain-owner access can require Webmin login to be enabled for that virtual server. If a generated domain link or the owner’s credentials fail, check the virtual server’s Webmin-login setting and the privileges assigned to that owner.
- Confirm that the account is the virtual server’s domain owner, not merely a mailbox or FTP login.
- Confirm that Webmin login is enabled for the domain owner.
- Confirm that the owner has the Webmin permissions needed for the requested operation.
- Use Usermin for ordinary mailbox users rather than granting them full Virtualmin administration.
Why SSH works while Virtualmin rejects the login
This symptom usually reflects a credential or account-type mismatch, not a failure of sudo itself.

SSH can authenticate with a key while the panel asks for a password. Set one with sudo passwd <username>, then retry with the username and the new Unix password.

You are trying the wrong username
The panel expects the Unix account name or an account explicitly enabled for Webmin. An SSH connection made as one user does not make a different mailbox or FTP user an administrator.
You are assuming root must be used
Use the sudo-capable account first. If root has no password, that is expected on many key-based cloud installations; it does not prevent administrative login through the sudo user.
The URL or port is wrong
Virtualmin/Webmin uses HTTPS on port 10000. Check that the address includes https:// and :10000. If the hostname is not resolving yet, test the server IP. An IP-based connection can produce a certificate warning even when the service is reachable.
The account is a domain user without Webmin access
Enable Webmin login for the domain owner or use the appropriate Usermin login for a mailbox user. A normal mailbox password is not automatically an administrative Virtualmin credential.

- Verify the endpoint: open the HTTPS address on port 10000, not an ordinary HTTP site URL.
- Verify the account category: decide whether you are signing in as a sudo-capable administrator, root, a domain owner, or a Usermin user.
- Verify a password exists: for an SSH-key account, set a password with
sudo passwd <username>. - Test sudo over SSH: run a harmless command such as
sudo -v. If sudo itself fails, fix that account’s server permissions before troubleshooting Virtualmin. - Check Webmin permission: for a domain owner, confirm that Webmin login is enabled and that the required privileges are assigned.
- Use the matching interface: send mailbox users to Usermin and administrators to Virtualmin/Webmin.
- Only then consider root: run
sudo passwd rootif a root-authenticated workflow is genuinely required.
This sequence separates network and URL problems from password problems, Unix privilege problems, and Virtualmin account-scope problems.

Security practices for passwordless and administrator access
- Prefer named accounts. Webmin’s Users and Groups guidance recommends creating and using a personal account instead of routinely logging in as root.
- Limit sudo. Give each administrator only the sudo permissions and Virtualmin/Webmin modules needed for the job.
- Protect panel passwords. A password set for a sudo user should be unique to that account and stored securely.
- Treat login links as credentials. A generated URL can provide access without a password, so share it only with the intended recipient and avoid leaving it in logs or public messages.
- Keep account purposes separate. Use administrator accounts for administration, domain-owner accounts for virtual-server management, and Usermin accounts for mailbox tasks.
- Do not create root access by habit. If the sudo-capable account works, there is no operational need to add a root password solely to satisfy the login screen.
Practical examples
Ubuntu-style cloud server with an SSH-only administrator
Suppose the provider created alex for SSH-key access and alex can run sudo. Open https://your-hostname:10000, enter alex, and supply the account password. If no password was created, connect with the SSH key and run sudo passwd alex, then use the resulting password in Virtualmin. There is no need to set a root password.
Administrator who must authenticate specifically as root
If a documented procedure requires a root login, connect as a sudo-capable user, run sudo passwd root, and then authenticate as root at the same HTTPS port. This is a deliberate exception, not the default login method.

Generate a domain-owner URL with virtualmin create-login-link --domain name. Confirm Webmin login is enabled for that virtual server, then deliver the URL privately. The recipient receives domain-level access rather than your server administrator’s credentials.
Mailbox user needing webmail administration
Generate a Usermin link with virtualmin create-login-link --usermin-user name and keep the URL confidential. Do not give a regular mailbox user a sudo-capable account merely to make panel access possible.
