If you only want someone else to play, switch to another user. If you want to remove the account from the console, delete its associated user—but save data stored locally for that user will also be deleted.
Can you log out of a Nintendo Account on Switch?
Not in the usual temporary sense. A Nintendo Account is linked to a user profile on the console, rather than being treated like a session that can simply be signed out.

Your correct option depends on your goal:
- Let someone else play: select another user.
- Remove one account from the console: delete the associated user.
- Sell or give away the Switch: initialize the entire console.
- Secure a lost or inaccessible Switch: sign out devices through your Nintendo Account online and change your password.
Nintendo supports up to eight linked Nintendo Accounts on one Switch or Switch 2 console, and one Nintendo Account can be linked to multiple consoles. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Account FAQ.

How to switch users without logging out
When another person needs to play, use a different user profile instead of deleting anything:

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Start the game or application.
- When the user-selection screen appears, choose the appropriate profile.
- Continue playing with that user’s saves and account.
You can also return to the HOME Menu and launch software using another profile. This is safe and does not remove the original user, but it is not a security logout: the original profile and its linked account remain on the console.
How to remove a Nintendo Account from a Switch
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Users.
- Select the user linked to the Nintendo Account.
- Choose Delete User.
- Read the warning and confirm the deletion.
This is Nintendo’s procedure for unlinking one Nintendo Account from a Switch console. The user profile is removed, but the Nintendo Account itself is not deleted. Its purchases remain associated with that online account. Refer to Nintendo’s unlinking guidance.
What happens when you delete a user?
- Local saves are deleted: save data stored on the console for that user is removed and may be unrecoverable.
- The Nintendo Account remains active: deleting the console user does not delete the online account.
- Purchases are not deleted from the account: however, downloaded software or DLC may become inaccessible on that console until the account is linked again or licenses are restored.
- Cloud backup is not universal: Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud support depends on the individual game, and some data cannot be backed up.
Do not assume that redownloading a game restores its save data. Game purchases and save files are separate.

If the user is the only profile on the console, Nintendo’s support guidance says it cannot be deleted directly. You may need to create another user first, or initialize the console depending on your situation.
How to secure a lost, shared, or sold Switch remotely
If you no longer have access to the console, remote account security is different from deleting its local user. Nintendo’s sign-in history shows devices used within the previous 30 days and can provide device-specific or all-device sign-out.
- Visit the Nintendo Account website and sign in.
- Open Sign-in and security settings.
- Open Sign-in history, then select View.
- Sign out from the relevant device, or choose Sign out from all devices.
- Change your Nintendo Account password.
- Review two-step verification, passkeys, linked Google or Apple accounts, and saved payment information.
Nintendo’s sign-in-history instructions explain the available device controls. Remote sign-out protects the account; it does not erase the user profile or data from the physical Switch.

How to prepare a Switch for sale or transfer
Deleting one user is not enough when transferring ownership. Use this sequence:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Back up or transfer important saves where the game and Nintendo’s services support it.
- Handle screenshots, videos, controllers, and microSD-card content you want to keep.
- Review payment information and account security.
- Use the console’s initialization or factory-reset option to remove all users and local console data.
- Keep the Nintendo Account active unless you genuinely intend to close it.
Delete User removes one profile. Initialize Console removes all users and local data, making it the appropriate choice for a sale or handoff. Delete Nintendo Account is a separate online action that can affect digital content, rewards, and associated data; it is not required to remove an account from a Switch.

A Switch user can be linked to one Nintendo Account. To use another account, create or use another user profile and link the second account there. Do not delete the existing profile unless you accept the loss of its local save data.

Protecting purchases without deleting the account
If your concern is that another person might access purchases or account features, deleting the Nintendo Account is unnecessary. Secure the online account with a strong password and a passkey or two-step verification, and use available console password or parental-control restrictions where appropriate. Review saved payment information if others can access the console.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will deleting a Switch user delete my Nintendo Account?
No. It removes the user profile and its local save data from the console, but the Nintendo Account and its account-associated purchases remain online.
Can I use the same Nintendo Account on another Switch?
Yes. One Nintendo Account can be linked to multiple Switch consoles, so removing it from one console is not normally required.
