How to Loop a Gurbani Playlist on YouTube Live with FFmpeg on Linux

Use FFmpeg’s input loop option to send a local Gurbani recording to YouTube Live, with the right RTMPS credentials, output settings, and checks for multi-file playlists.

To loop one local file into a YouTube Live event, use FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i, then send the encoded output to the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. For a playlist of separate recordings, each input needs its own loop arrangement or a compatible playlist workflow; the single-file command below does not automatically handle multiple files.

Before you start

  • Install an FFmpeg build that includes the encoders you intend to use, such as libx264 and AAC. Check your distribution’s package and build options; commands and available encoders can vary.
  • Make sure the Linux machine has a stable upload connection capable of sustaining the bitrate you select.
  • Confirm that your channel is eligible to livestream: YouTube requires channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and streamers to be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Confirm you have permission to rebroadcast every recording and any accompanying visuals. A devotional subject, public availability, or an existing YouTube upload does not by itself establish permission.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a live event or select an existing one. Use its stream settings to obtain the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s instructions are in Manage live stream settings.
  2. Choose the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS; it describes it as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” that provides encryption. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, chat, or public log. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.

Loop one file with FFmpeg

For a single audio or video file, the following is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command for every Linux build or media file. Replace the input filename and RTMPS URL/key placeholders with your own values. Select output dimensions and video bitrate to fit the source and connection.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "track-or-video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"

-stream_loop is an input option, so it must appear before the corresponding -i. FFmpeg documents that “Loop 0 means no loop, loop -1 means infinite loop.” The -re option reads the input at its native rate rather than sending a file as fast as possible. In this example, -g 60 at 30 fps yields a two-second GOP. The example does not set a video bitrate or output size, because those depend on your intended resolution, frame rate, codec, source, and upload capacity.

Do not paste a real key into a command that will be saved in shell history or a shared script. If you need to keep the key out of the command line, use a locally protected configuration or credential-handling method appropriate to your setup, and ensure it is not readable by other users. Avoid sharing FFmpeg logs without checking them for sensitive values.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingest; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the table in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

  • Video codec: H.264 is used in the example. Choose a codec supported by both your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current ingest guidance.
  • Frame rate and keyframes: The sample uses 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to two seconds. If you change frame rate, recalculate the GOP to preserve the desired interval.
  • Bitrate and resolution: Set these for the target output and available upload bandwidth. Leave headroom for network variation; if YouTube reports poor stream health, lower the bitrate or output resolution.
  • Audio: AAC at 128 kb/s is shown as an example. Check the source audio and your chosen YouTube settings; a video-only source or unusual audio stream may require different mapping or encoding.

What changes for a playlist of separate files?

The command above loops one input file only. It does not move automatically from one track to the next, and placing one -stream_loop -1 before a single input will repeat only that input.

For a multi-file Gurbani playlist, choose a workflow that handles transitions and timestamps for your actual media. FFmpeg’s input loop option applies to the input placed after it; separate inputs therefore need their own loop arrangement if each is to repeat. A concatenated playlist workflow also depends on whether files have compatible streams and parameters and how the chosen method handles boundaries. Verify the syntax against your FFmpeg version and test the complete playlist locally before using it for a live event. Check for gaps, timestamp or stream errors, and confirm every item is cleared for rebroadcast.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Start the event in Live Control Room and run FFmpeg with the RTMPS URL and key. Keep the terminal available to watch for connection, encoder, or input errors.
  2. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube’s preview. Check that both picture and sound are present and that the audio is at an appropriate level.
  3. Review YouTube’s stream-health indicators before making the event public or sharing it. If the feed is unstable, check network upload capacity, selected bitrate, and FFmpeg output for errors.
  4. Monitor the stream while it runs. A process ending, a host losing power, or a network failure can interrupt delivery; an infinite input loop does not make the computer or connection reliable by itself.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive threshold is not a guarantee of unlimited event duration or uninterrupted operation. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder for YouTube’s setup guidance.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg rejects -stream_loop or the file does not repeat The option is missing, unsupported in the build, or placed after the input it should affect. Put -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i; check your FFmpeg version and documentation.
YouTube does not receive the feed Wrong URL or key, a key copied incorrectly, or an RTMP/RTMPS mismatch. Copy the RTMPS URL and key for the selected event from Live Control Room. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
Preview appears but video or audio is missing The input may lack the expected stream, or the chosen output mapping/encoder may not fit it. Inspect the input streams and FFmpeg’s output. Adjust encoding or mapping for the file rather than assuming every file matches the example.
Stream health is poor or the feed disconnects Upload capacity may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the host/network may be unstable. Compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance and your sustained upload capacity; reduce output demands and test again.
A playlist has a gap, error, or abrupt transition Files may differ in codec, dimensions, frame rate, audio format, or timestamps, or the playlist method may not handle boundaries as expected. Test the entire sequence with the actual files and FFmpeg build, checking transitions and logs before going live.
